At a first glance, The Fall appears to be a whimsical story featuring characters that go about their day-to-day lives almost blissfully. However, it’s evident from the beginning that a long shadow hangs over the characters in this world. While the whimsy never fades, the shadow darkens over time, creating a sense of dread. With intricate character dynamics and artwork that could easily fit into a children’s book, The Fall is a comic that continually leaves the reader wondering about what may happen next.
The comic features a cast of characters known as sprites. Only an inch or two tall, each sprite appears to be based on a different thing that can be found in nature, such as tufts of grass, petals, or twigs. Each of them is presented in bright colors and an art style that I can only describe as soft. The main character is Tuft, a light green sprite that clearly has a lot hanging over their head. They greet the remains of their community, and some characters are far happier to see Tuft than others, who appear to blame them for some sort of tragedy.
There are six members of Tuft’s community at in the comic, but this number has the potential to dwindle over time for a wide variety of reasons, leaving Tuft to grapple with the possibility of being alone. The community they love so dearly will not survive at this rate. So, what can they hold onto instead?
Conclusion: An amazing start to a comic that leaves you wanting to read more, it has 5 chapters so far and is moving on to its 6th so it is a perfect time to read and catch up and see where this tale of isolation and fear will end!
