“I can’t believe they’re making me do this,” you sighed. “Thisis unbelievable.”
You groaned as you pushed the shopping cart down the chips aisle;the grocery list in your hand getting crumpled. You looked around at the chips,trying to be as quick as possible. “Just do the chore Kate. It’ll all be overonce you grab this and the eggs. That’s it.”
It wasn’t fair how, even though your brother snuck out last nightto go to his girlfriend’s party, you still get punished with the chores. You’drather be at home, reading a book or watching tv… anything to get you away fromhere, or anywhere outside for that matter. You felt conscious in such a publicplace, shy out of your mind.
You found your favorite chips, looking at the price. I’vegot some spare money anyways… Realizing it was on the top shelf, you sighedagain, and stood on your tippy toes. You tried reaching it, but failed.Standing on the bottom shelf, you reached again, and it still wouldn’t work.You were almost there, trying to magically grow a few inches to reach it. “Almost…Almost ther-“
You shrieked, turning around and losing your balance as youtoppled onto the person behind you. You both landed with a loud ‘thump’, andyour chips landed beside you.
“Ow,” you mumbled, rubbing your head as you opened your tightlyshut eyes. You sat up and realized you were sitting on a cute boy, with yourlegs around his waist. Your eyes widened as you realized you were practicallystraddling him. He blinked at you, his blonde curls curled to perfection. Hisbrown eyes soon widened as he realized the position you were in, and stared atthe blushing mess: you. You were frozen to your spot, as you both stared into eachother’s eyes with embarrassment and awkwardness.
“Hey Mingha-”another boy popped out from the end of the aisle,and his eyes also widened as he saw you two. “Minghao, what the hell?”
That snapping you out of your daze, you immediately shovedyourself away from the curly haired boy. You grabbed your chips and threw theminto your cart as you prayed you wouldn’t do anything else to make this anymore awkward. You turned to the two boys, bowing an apology. “Uh… uh I- er- I’mreally sorry about what happened.”
You quickly turned, plowing away from the two boys, walkingin the other direction even though the eggs were on the other side of the supermarket. This is so bad; this is so bad. I should’ve just stayed home. Oh myGod. This is so bad.
“Uh hey wait!” the same voice called out to you.
You let out a breath, your shoulders tensing as you turnedaround. “Uh yeah?” Please don’t make this worse, please dont’ make this worse.
“The eggs are this way,” he pointed, pointing past the otherguy with the brown hair. He held out a yellow paper, with the markings of yourmom’s handwriting.
“Oh…” you laughed awkwardly. “Yeah… thanks.” You awkwardly maneuvereda U-turn with your shopping cart, hitting a few chips. You heard the darkhaired boy snort, mumbling something under his breath. You turned even morered, speeding towards the boy, and grabbed your shopping list.
“Um… also, I’m Minghao. Xu Minghao,” the boy smiledsheepishly, handing you your list. “I’m sorry about what happened earlier. Ididn’t mean to scare you.”
You nodded in awe, fully seeing Minghao’s features. You feltyourself turn impossibly more red, and looked away. “It-It’s okay. Sorry for,uh, straddling you.”
The other boy burst out laughing, clutching his stomach. “Okayyou two lovebirds, but we gotta head out Minghao. The other boys are probablylooking for us.”
Both you and Minghao choked at the word ‘lovebirds’, butMinghao nodded understandingly. “Don’t mind Jun. Okay… I’ll see you again,” hedrifted off, looking at you.
“Oh! Kate. My name’s Kate,” you smiled goofily, and hesmiled back. A silence went over you, but was soon interrupted by Jun coughing,and Minghao nodded again. “Hopefully I’ll see you again Kate.”
You watched as he waved, smiling another smile at you as hejogged to Jun. Jun winked at you with a smirk, and him and Minghao both walkedaway from the aisle, and out of your eyesight. You sighed again, running a handthrough your hair. Wow.
You went back to your first job, and opened the crumpledyellow paper. Your eyes widened as they met with a new set of numbers under thelist your mom made, turning red again. Right next to the numbers was a smallnote, ‘Hey… Call me’, that was decorated with a smiley face. You smiled softlyat the note, and sighed, this time happily. You pushed your cart towards thecold foods section, your mind filled with images of the curly-haired boy.
