YOU ARE FIVE.

the first time callum showed signs of being a legilimens.  the ability manifested as nothing more than a feeling deep inside himself. callum was able to sense the emotions of those around him  ;  a horrid sensation that left his stomach in knots.  being so young, callum didn’t understand why he was experiencing these emotions.  it was particularly odd to him considering they weren’t his own. fortunately, most days passed without incident. the sensation would usually come to callum when those around him were experiencing pain or anger.

YOU ARE NINE.

the first time he heard thoughts other than his own. it was as easy as reading a book. all callum had to do was look at someone and immediately knew what they were thinking. this ability haunted him. he hated it.  he was terrified of it. he didn’t understand it. not wanting to be called a freak or worse, callum never spoke a single word about this to anyone. not even to his twin sister. holding onto the secret resulted in callum constantly pushing people away. well, making friends became difficult when you could hear their honest thoughts and feelings.

YOU ARE ELEVEN.

refuge came in the form of an acceptance letter. a huge sigh of relief. callum wasn’t crazy… he was a wizard. it had been a shock, of course, but finally the boy didn’t feel so alone. it was at ilvermorny that callum learned all he could about legilmency. and it was at ilvermorny that he learned just how few possessed this particular gift. making friends didn’t get any easier.  one particularly nasty thought from a fellow thunderbird nearly ruined his entire experience. still, callum managed to find his group in the end.

YOU ARE SEVENTEEN.

with the end of ilvermorny, came the belief of knowing everything about legilimency. spoiler alert : he didn’t. by this age callum managed to find some sort of balance and control over the gift. it was difficult to ignore others’ thoughts at times. people were easiest to read when they were hurting. this sucked, especially in february.  so many broken hearts on valentine’s day. so many unwelcome thoughts in callum’s mind. it came in handy when he wanted to learn secrets… not that callum ever abused his power.

YOU ARE TWENTY THREE.

finally matured enough to realize this was not a gift. this was a responsibility.  callum accepted that he’d never be able to master or have full control over being a legilimens. at least not any time soon. he stopped using his gift when he could help it. it didn’t seem fair to have this advantage over other people. the majority of the time callum learned something he never wanted to know in the first place.  unless an innocent person would come to harm, he refused to act on any information he’d come across.
