what did lestat even "fail" at? like what are we talking about. in order to "fail" there has to be a goal.

what did he attempt? 🤨 literally, what? lestat never had a goal. he kept flip-flopping between wanting to be a rockstar and wanting to abandon it. he didn't care about the great conversion, he didn't really care about being the biggest or the best. he was completely aimless, and even at the season's end with some sort of cult following mostly made up of vampires, what was there to succeed or fail at?

they invented a meaningless rhetorical schema to make him pitiable and enable his equally unjustified rebound, the way that any ultra privileged person has to invent roadblocks for themselves so they can "overcome" them. this season is truly a textbook centering of white feelings even down to the alleged highs and lows of lestat, who never suffers the most (like louis does) and yet gets to triumphantly declare his victory over the forces of ??? not reaching billboard's top ten.

I'm not trying to say gender bending and race bending characters is equal but all this does remind me of when I was in an amateur production of Macbeth playing Banquo and the director specifically wnated to cast a woman as Banquo. First I thought it was an attempt at diversity having more than 2 female named characters, but then he said he wanted to turn banquos death scene from and off stage death, to an on stage death and rape scene to "make the world seem more brutal". Funny how casting a woman in the role suddenly made him want to brutalize the character 😐

privileged demographic artists genuinely think it's profound btw. antiracists/feminists/etc. can rage and scold about it all we want but the genuine truth is that when you grow up inside the bubble of systemic bigotry and propaganda but still in a liberal sensibility, you intellectually understand that everyone is equal but you don't actually internalize the full experience of other groups' humanity. you attempt to treat people of color or women or lgbt groups with respect because you know that's moral but you don't engage with the diversity of their experiences and so you don't know them, and they remain othered in your mind in all these seemingly minute ways that add up to an unconscious segregation from you the objective cultural understander. the extent of your ability to truly place yourself in their shoes and imagine their humanity is limited to just that, unfounded imagination, and Yes They Are Indeed People 🙂 becomes the most urgent thing about them that you think needs emphasizing to your fellow majority demo because you consider that basic fact to be profound, because you still hover on the edge of it. you don't at all consider that it's tired and offensive and perverse to the reality of the landscape of minority narratives because you aren't making art for Them, you're making it for racists and sexists and homophobes and transphobes and good moral liberal understanders like yourself who agree that it's profound and worth repeating.

which is why as righteous and earned as it is, scolding these people has almost zero effect because they truly think that their intentions and impact are noble and to simply portray marginalized groups as people without balls and chains attached to them would not constitute fighting the phobias and the isms, and they'll dismiss criticism because you're just one overzealous perspective and it's ungrateful for you not to appreciate their allyship.

Interviewer: There is something stereotypically masculine about the kind of chest-pumping, overly stylish translations of your predecessors.

Wilson: I’m really skeptical about any gender essentialism on that. Other women have published translations of Homer into Italian and into other languages I can’t read. I’ve read some of the French translation by Anne Dacier from the 17th century, and it’s fairly loquacious. Could you pick the translations of The Odyssey by a woman out of a lineup? Absolutely not. But journalists wanted it to be about that. I get that you’re trying to create a story, but I just don’t believe it.

Interviewer: Have you followed the online discourse about the film so far?

Wilson: It’s made-up controversy. Nobody’s seen this movie. It’s just the usual triggers about race and gender, and I just find it very tedious.

Interviewer: curious about what it would look like to make a feminist version of The Odyssey. It seems that could be a helpful framework to have ahead of Nolan’s movie.

Wilson: I’ve been watching a lot of Nolan movies in preparation for all of this, and it seems to me that we don’t know what the script’s going to be like. If it’s the usual Nolan plot of “A guy is on a quest far from home and struggling to get back to an objectified female character,” then I’m not sure I see that plot as inherently particularly feminist.

Interviewer: Looking at those two changes, it seems to me that your translation has a feminist function, whether it’s intentional or not.

Wilson: I think the bar should be higher for feminist translation. There are people whose project that is.

Any TVL cast member being interviewed: yeah so when I first read the script I wanted to murder Rolin with my bare hands :) haha yeah he butchered my character so badly that I threw my laptop across the room :) aha and then I yelled at him for two hours which only resulted in minor tweaks to the script :) yeah I was so shocked and confused :) and he comes up with scenes that don’t make any sense in-universe. :) and I worry for the future of this tv show :) but it’s alright as long as you think about how [5 min in depth analysis of details that the cast member has come up themselves to justify the season despite these justifications not being evident in the actual show at all] aha :)

💖 these are the four artists who, in light of the most recent season, appear to have carried iwtv on their backs while the white showrunner got all the credit. very impressed with their work not just writing/directing/editing-wise but because their presence clearly set a certain tone in that writers' room. and i imagine it took quite a bit of effort to maintain it, considering what that writers' room turned into once they were no longer in the picture. i'm really excited to keep an eye on their careers and i hope they move on to do great things with more creative control

AMC really struck gold with the unreliable narrator idea because now people will insist that any flaw in the storytelling is actually a genius premeditated reflection of a fallible narrator, any pacing issues are actually a genius premeditated reflection of a characters psyche, and any lack of character development is actually a genius premeditated reflection on a characters refusal to face their own trauma, and having cheap looking production is actually a genius premeditated reflection of a characters memories, and any unwarranted deviation from the source material is actually a genius premeditated lie that will be proven false at some unspecified point, and any poor handling of sensitive subjects is actually a genius premeditated commentary on the characters own failings, etc, etc.

Fan Appreciation Daze

How a show's fans lifted my spirits years after working on the series.

let me get this straight:

they changed the name of the show. promoted the entire season as lestat's rockstar journey. emphasized the musical aspect. produced a dozen whole songs of varying quality with sam reid giving it his level best. introduced akasha. made the great conversion the only throughline of the plot. talked about the big concert lestat was going to do. emphasized that he still had fresh tracks to drop. had him fake his death so that his reappearance would constitute virtual proof of vampirism. built the last two episodes around the lead-up to this big climactic concert where all these things would come together and one actual event would happen in this season of nothing upon nothing.

and then didn't do the concert.
