How do smart people know they’re smart? When does it become smarter than the average smart? Could you call yourself smart if you were only smart relatively? Aren’t most smart people only relatively smart? And doesn’t that mean that a person might be smarter at one thing but not quite as smart at another?

So… how do smart people know they’re smart?

I think it's a lot like beauty which is dependent in the eye of the beholder, i.e. subjective. So an inexperienced student could say that a draftsman is smart by his standards, but an architect could say that the same draftsman still has a lot to learn by his standards (thus, not smart enough).

So to answer your question, I guess smart people know they're smart if they feel that they've reached their self-imposed standard of "smartness".

But in some cases, it can be a psycho-social thing. When a lot of people around you tell you that you're smart, you'd convince yourself that you are (or something like that).

Then you casually start talking about opinions, history of the place, local attractions, where you guys are heading next-- and the next thing you know, you'll be parting ways as soon as you just got to know a little more about each other.
