“Dusk.There’s something about the day coming to an end that feels… serene, I guess.”

action: What’s the worst moment/memory of your career so far?  

Helet out a soft breath, shaking his head. These questions always led him back tofour years ago and he didn’t appreciate that. The worst moment, honestly, wasthe moment he found Amara in the bathroom. The moment he used however wasnothing compared to it: “Those days after I’m done filming a movie and theroutine is over, then the everlasting question if I’m gonna find a job againafterwards.”

“Idon’t.” He chuckled, though it died quickly after. It was, sadly, the truth.

roommates: Who are some of the people in your life you miss and/or wish that were in the house with you?

“Imight sound heartless, but no one. Not really. I have enough with the peoplethat are in the house.”

rumors: What’s the worst thing a trash magazine / website has posted about you?

“Uh…”Chase pondered for a moment. There was onething he hated having seen, the only rumor that came to his mind which hetruly hated. And it all had to do with Amara’s stay at the hospital. Except hecouldn’t give that away. “I’ve stopped paying attention to the tabloids. Allthey do is lie to get ratings and I’m over it. So I wouldn’t know what’s beingsaid about me anymore.”

jordanouellette:

Jordan was standing in the kitchen, having a glass of milk as his dog contentedly drinking water from a plastic bowl Jordan had found in a cupboard. He was a little surprised that this new person was moving in in the middle of the night, but it wasn’t really his business, right? Jordan chuckled at the man’s comment. “A fine hello to you, too.” Jordan greeted, lifting his cup in salutation. “I have jet lag.” He added in explanation, even though he got the impression that it wouldn’t matter to the man. “My team just had an away game in New York. I’m Jordan, by the way. Welcome to the house.”

“Thanks,” Chase nodded. The first thing he noticed was the dog on the corner. He wasn’t known to be particularly fond of dogs, though didn’t exactly had a problem with them. Cats were more up his alley. He’d have to learn to live with a dog now though. Hopefully that didn’t mean waking up at 4am to it barking. “Your dog?”

Once his eyes adjusted to the figure Desmond was able to make out the actor he, may, have wronged in the past. His eyes scan over Chase’s face as the younger man spoke, a devilish smirk tugged on his features. Oh now losing the bet felt much more fun. He took two steps closer when he noticed the actor wasn’t moving, both hands resting on his hips. “Chase, darling, I didn’t know you’d be here.” 

“…what are you not overjoyed to see me? Aren’t reunions supposed to be fun? C’mon we must drink to this.” 

“No.” Chase was quick to cut him off, stepping away from him as he moved forwards. He walked around the living room, making sure to keep his distance from the director before speaking again. “Anyone being happy to see you must be out of their mind.” He, for once, wasn’t. If anything, seeing him again made Chase want to pack his bags and leave. And yet, he stood there, something (besides the contract he’d signed) holding him in the house. “Just to be clear, I don’t care what you think should be done. You stay away from me and there won’t be a problem.”

The common area felt like a hotel lobby when the director stepped in. Desmond eyes scanned over the walls taking note of where each camera was visibly placed. ‘Damnit Kenneth’ he thought as ‘Damnit box office results’ followed. With a shake of the head he focused his attention elsewhere.  As he turned his body to be visually more appealing to at least one of the cameras. A sound from the other side of the room snapped him out of his thoughts. With a turn of his head he attempted to recognize the, now, roommate. “You’d think they’d make this place nicer for a group of celebrities.”

This had to be a joke. Chase stopped on his tracks, taking in the person before him and let out a heavy sigh. First, Amara; then, Kyra and now Desmond. The only thing they needed to throw at him was asking about the rumors of the past that no one ever confirmed and then they’d have Chase considering leaving this damned house. ❝ A pretentious asshole like you would say that. ❞ He remarked, staying as far from the other as possible.

“That’s exactly what you are tryin’ to do here. You’re tryin’… this isn’t then. We’re not those people. I’m better now but you refuse to see that,” she told him with a shake of her head, already starting to pace back and forth slightly as she felt the frustration start to build because of him. Because he refused to let go of the past that she’d been working to forget completely. Why did he want to bring it up? What good would that do? Her heart sunk in her chest, breathing came hard when she heard him speak again but this time she paused and glanced over at his face. “I was happy with you. Don’t… don’t think that ‘cause of what happened that I wasn’t…” She swallowed thickly as her gaze fell on her wrist once more, rubbing it with her other hand as she struggled to stay calm despite feeling everything but as she stood there. “Chase, there ain’t nothing that is going to happen. Whether you want to believe I’m better or not… I can’t make you stop the way you feel but you said so yourself, no one is going to be there to save me next time… but there isn’t going to be one. It’s a few months of playing house with a bunch of people.. I’m a better actress than you think I am.”

His mouth opened and closed in an instant, words stuck on his throat as he shook his head to clear his mind. He had to turn away from her. She’d been happy, but that wasn’t enough to stop her. She’d been happy and yet… here they were. Him; slowly stepping away from her as she stayed in her spot. What did it matter if she’d been happy or not? What did it matter now? It was too late to fix anything as he looked back at her. ❝ Okay. ❞ Chase replied simply, nodding as he turned on his heel to walk away. He’d told himself millions of times that she’d been happy, that nothing of their time together had been a lie. But her confirming it, left an empty feeling in his chest he hadn’t been expecting. He stopped, suddenly, holding a hand up for the person that came to interrupt them, like she had predicted. ❝You know? I don’t care about that. Not anymore. This is not about our relationship. Or who you are, to me. It’s about who you are to the world and who you really are. And this… thing, you’ve created. That’s not it. ❞ He finished, his hands falling to his sides as he pushed past the person waiting for them and going back inside the house. Not, without turning his damn mic back on.

“They will,” she replied quietly with a shrug, knowing that sooner or later they’d all be called to a diary room or to come back in the house with the rest of the people. But Amara could only handle them for so long before she started to feel the pressure building and the tension stretch thin. Chase had been the one to save her once, but she was better now. That’s what the doctors told her. That’s what her team told her. And that was what she told herself. Why couldn’t he? “Why can’t you be happy for me? Why couldn’t you just accept that I’m better now?” She let her arms rise and fall with an exasperated tone, tired of trying to walk on eggshells to make him happy when her very presence made him agitated, or so she thought. “The doctor said I was better, he cleared me or I wouldn’t be here. My manager… he said the same thing. The only one that’s picking at an old wound here is you, Chase.”

Why couldn’t he? He had often asked himself that, whenever one of her interviews was playing on TV and he couldn’t turn a blind eye on it. Why couldn’t he just let it go and let her continue with her charade? The answer was obvious to anyone with eyes, but Chase wasn’t one to let himself think about it. He’d been there, he’d found her in a pool of blood and for a moment thought he’d lost her permanently. That she’d succeeded in removing herself from the equation. Luckily that hadn’t been the case and it all turned into a media circus that almost ended his career. And that wasn’t even the part he cared about. It was the fact that she came out of it and pretended like nothing happened, like he hadn’t seen what this life took from her.

❝ I don’t— ❞ He struggled to come up with words that would explain why without giving anything away. A sigh left his lips as he, too, turned his gaze away from her. ❝ Because if you had ever been happy when we dated, it wasn’t when you were smiling for the world. ❞ It was when she’d been with him. The private moments they could get were the only ones they could be themselves. Not just relationship wise. ❝ Because, if I know you, and I do. That look on our face just moments ago, was nothing but the same one you had years ago. Because I lov—loved you and couldn’t see what you were going through and as good an actress as you are. You can’t fool me, Amara. ❞

“Of course not, there are still people that you haven’t met yet that you’re not fighting,” she shot back under her breath, despite the lack of microphones on them at the moment. Soon enough they’d be found by one of the producers that would run out there and tell them to turn it back on but until then, he could say what he liked. “They will soon enough.” Amara shook her head, not wanting to let him see how much he got under her skin when he was standing so close or when she could read the look on his face far too easily. That was why she looked away and stared out ahead. “The only difficult position I see here is you, the one you’re makin’ by thinkin’ I’m going to do… I’m not that girl anymore. This.. this will be good for everyone.”

Chase wasn’t sure if his heart beat faster due to her being this close, or her stubborn mind. Possibly both. But even more so the fact that she loved putting up a façade. She loved being the smiling Amara everyone knew and loved and wanted to get to know. Except the Amara they knew was not the real her. ❝ Let them come, then. ❞ He cared not. Even under contract they were allowed to have some private moments and if anyone wanted to say anything about it, they’d have to deal with him. ❝ I’m the only difficult position? ❞ He scoffed, shaking his head as he stepped away from her. ❝ I can’t—you’re fuckin’ unbelievable. ❞

“No, you’re just fightin’ everyone that has a different viewpoint than you do. If they’re enjoyin’ what they do for a livin’, then they must be lyin’ cause it’s so hard to be an actor an’ be happy,” she shot back, swallowing down the rise of her heart in her throat when he reached over and flipped off her microphone before she turned to face him. “You’re going to get the both of us in trouble. You might not care but I still do.” But she didn’t make a move to turn it back on, yet. Not when he was going where she wanted to forget even existed despite knowing that it was the reason they were  the way they were. Amara leveled a gaze at him, her voice shaky the next time she spoke, low and  under her breath. “I don’t need you to save me.” Again, because the first time that he had – she’d all but ruined his life as well as her own. 

❝ No, I’m not fighting everyone. ❞ She should know that very well when the only one he was fighting was her. For his own damn reasons. Whether he was good at talking about it, it didn’t matter. She knew better than to say something like that. He wasn’t mad at everyone, only her… and those who had used them to gain their own damn money. Her, more than anyone else, when she still pretended like everything was okay when it was the farthest from that. ❝ I don’t care. If they want the microphones on all the time, they can turn it back on themselves. ❞ Chase let out a heavy breath. He was standing too close to her, heart racing as he almost, almost reached over to caress her cheek, but didn’t. Instead, his fists clenched at his sides, keeping them there to stop himself from doing something stupid. ❝ Then don’t put yourself in a difficult position. ❞

“I’m not livin’ a lie, I’m just livin’ my life, that’s all,” she replied, barely believing it herself when she knew that the mantra was all that she had left. That and her career. If she lost it, then what would she have? She’d almost lost it all once before, thinking there was only one way out of it all but she’d been given a second chance and she wasn’t about to waste it making him happy. “You… you can believe that or not, I really don’t care anymore ‘cause it ain’t up to you. All I have is my career an’ I ain’t about to walk away from that.”

Yet more lies left her lips and Chase felt… disappointed. If anything he’d thought she’d open her eyes after the incident, not close them tightly and refuse to see the reality of the people that surrounded her. “I didn’t quit my career; doesn’t mean I’m going to turn a blind eye on the obvious.” He scoffed lightly. “How many times have you told yourself that? Living your life, sure, let’s pretend that’s true. It’s not like you’re going to tell the truth anytime soon. That’s all you do these days anyway; lie.” It was too early for this, for any of this as he took a drag off his cigarette and pushed himself up to walk closer to her, turning off his mic in the process before reaching around her and doing the same to hers. “If the day does come when you finally get tired, I hope there’s someone there to save you, but it won’t be me this time.”

Amara sucked in a breath, trying not to let anything get under her skin this quickly but it was hard to do so when he was there along with all the cameras that she couldn’t ignore. Despite her smiles, despite the way she carried herself – he continued to act like none of it was real. Why couldn’t she be fine? ”Don’t you realize what this is supposed to be? A chance for everyone to tell the truth and share that private side of themselves with the world.” She shrugged, repeating what’d been told to her around the words of caution to not let herself get too carried away. “You can’t lie to a camera if you don’t know it’s there.”

“I do,” He shrugged, turning to glance at the camera by the doorway, before looking at her. There was no hiding anything when the cameras would be on them the whole day and night. All their secrets would be exposed and it was only a matter of time before they were used against them. And if they found out… sure, his image would be fixed, but they’d ruin hers. “But you can lie to others and smile like nothing wrong. Forget the camera and look at what you’re doing. You’re living a lie and have for so long that you can’t even see what’s right in front of you.”

“They won’t notice if you don’t say anythin’,” she snapped back, not thinking clearly before she’d noticed that she was running her fingers along the inside of her wrists. They would notice. The cameras would notice. There would be more questions that she couldn’t handle as she glanced over her shoulder at the camera she knew was above the doorway. Whatever she thought that she could handle, it was going to test her to the limits as she pressed her lips together and turned back towards the backyard before pushing up off the steps and walking down the rest of them. “I’ll be fine,” she murmured under her breath, trying to convince the both of them of it.

Chase leaned back on the bench gingerly. An eyebrow raised her way at the sudden outburst. He’d been trying to be… civil, as she had put it the day before, but she’d slipped and let him see exactly what he knew was there. And it only made him mad. At her, at the company she kept, at himself, at the whole damn world for all that had happened. He took a deep breath through his nose and reached into his pocket for a cigarette. “Stop lying to yourself and maybe you really will be.”

“It’s been four years, I’m better now.” Or so she told herself. Or her team told her too, believing that took better care of her mental stability despite the number of things on her agenda were piling up the longer she played house here with everyone else. Unable to gaze on him anymore, she stared straight ahead instead as her fingers rubbed the lines hidden by the bangles on her wrists as she fought to keep calm.

He wanted to believe her. Fuck, did he want to, but he knew her better than to fall for her lies when she’d gone right back to her old habits. The same habits that he didn’t know how to spot back when they dated, but now were as clear as day. He sighed, “If you say so,” but the edge to his words was clearly reluctant as his eyes fell to her hands and the way they shook and rubbed at her wrists. “They’ll notice that if you keep doing it.” The day he’d found her was still one of the worst days of his life; thinking he’d been too late, that he lost her. It was the last thing he wanted to go through again; the last thing he wanted her to go through again.

Amara let out a sigh before she dropped her head forward to rest on her knees before even bothering to look over in his direction. She knew that it was too much to ask for in being civil, for once. “Why is it so hard for you to believe that I could be happy? That I could be here because I want to be…”

He could answer her question explicitly. Tell her exactly what she wanted to hear, but only settled for a slight grimace. A heavy sigh left his lips then, rubbing at his temples lightly. “You know why, Amara.” He didn’t want to see her hit rock bottom like that again and going back to the same habits… it was a time bomb, ready to burst at any moment.

It was always complicated, wasn’t that their story? Everything was complicated. Her own story was one that was mixed up with truth and well written publicity pieces to keep her image intact despite the way that the media had portrayed her disappearance. Most put the blame on him when they knew differently, her gaze falling to her wrists that were hidden by the bracelets that adorned them. “I’m tired, that’s all.” As if that would explain everything. “Once I get used to all the cameras all the time… I’m sure things will settle down an’ I’ll be… good.”

Good. She said. Good. It almost had him letting out a humorless chuckle that he was able to hold back. He shook his head then, “Are you listening to yourself?” Chase asked with the raise of an eyebrow. “I don’t know who you think you’re fooling, but it sure isn’t me.”

Amara wasn’t the first to look away, a first in a long list of things she’d always come in second in when it came to Chase and while she would be the first to admit it, never to him. It was exactly why she never felt right after what’d happened. “You make it sound like you’re trapped here.”

“Not trapped, no.” He shook his head, sparing a quick look at her. “Just… here, I guess.” That explained nothing at all and he knew it. He didn’t know how to explain what he couldn’t even let himself think about. Her, mostly. Her and what he knew could happen again, but didn’t want to allow himself to ponder over in fear it would. If she kept up the lie and the pretense that was. “It’s complicated.” He shrugged once more, a heavy sigh leaving his lips as he let his gaze meet hers. “You don’t look so happy yourself.”
