As someone who lives in a walkable city, this is completely 100% true. I've missed flights, sacrificed friendships, and lost jobs because any time I try to get myself to a commitment I can't help but walk by stores. Doesn't matter if I have somewhere to be. Doesn't matter if I've lived here for years and the shops are nothing new. I must pop in. Every day, every time, compelled by the gawking tourist inside me.

And when I finally tear myself away, arms loaded with useless capitalism trinkets, crying and thirsty and ragged with dust in my throat clawing and crawling my way out the door... what do you know, there's always another store right next door.

If only... If only I could live somewhere more hostile to human life... maybe then capitalism would loosen its grip on me.
