2 foot difference between a volleyball player and a gymnast
My favourite thing about the Olympics is the huge range in human diversity. Every single person is as perfectly optimized for their sport and they are all the BEST at what they do. And it always gives us awesome pictures like this =)
✨☘ - thanks Milton for the photos!
all i’m saying is i’ve watched dancers compete with the same injuries that put football players out for six weeks and yet it’s 2016 and i still have to routinely have the “irish dance is a sport” talk with an unreasonable amount of people
It started out as couple 2x2 dance tiles in my living room. But two tiles became four tiles, and four became eight. Then it was decided that practicing four hours a day inside the house was “disruptive” and “inconvenient to the family.” (To be fair, I was blocking the tv. I can see where the annoyance came from.)
Being demoted to the garage was exactly not a preferable situation at first, because let’s face it, I’m a baby and Virginia’s weather isn’t exactly great. It’s far enough north to be freezing in the winter and far enough south to be a sauna in the summer. But there’s something about having a space all to your own that even the worst weather can’t diminish. There’s something about getting snow day from school and running to the dance floor because all you have is time. There’s something about opening the garage doors when the snow melts into spring and dancing with the first warm breezes of the season. There’s something about the peeling tape, the loud fans, and the Christmas lights I put up in the eighth grade and never got around to taking down. The oireachtas ribbons, the mirror my sister gave me, the disturbingly frizzy wig I have on display with a crown but refuse to get rid of because it’s just too funny. The faded pictures of Claire Greaney, Ciara Sexton, my feis friends. To do lists from 2014, Joan of Arc and the angles, Church Hill Irish festival posters from 2006 on. How many dance floor tiles have I had to replace because the split in half from too much wear? How many Thanksgivings, Christmases, and late nights did I spend here just because I couldn’t pull myself away? I was a novice, a prizewinner, a prelim, and an open champion on this floor. A middle schooler, a high schooler; a child, an adult.
It’s an oven in the summer, a freezer in the winter. It floods when it storms, and it smells like construction. It’s not much, but it it’s always been more than enough. It’s bittersweet to be dancing on it for the last time in awhile.

(Apologies that it cuts off at the end- I recorded it on my phone and my storage was full and now the video isn’t up any more as far as I can see)
reblogging again because OBVI
she got a standing ovation by the judges when she did this at north coast feis in february 😂
Don’t know how I haven’t reblogged this yet! Thank you to whoever posted this. I really appreciate it! It means so much to me to have this:)
Played this while I did my HW like it was classical music
For anyone who hasn’t been graced with this, yet.
Great day at the Maine State Feis!! 3rd overall and couldn’t be happier!!
Had my dad record the reel I made up for the choreography competition at the feis so here ya go 👀
Wouldn’t it be cool if I could get better at dance by studying action shots from Nationals?
It actually is possible though. I love studying my action shots and the shots of other top dancers to see what strengths I have that I can capitalize on and what weaknesses I have that aren’t as obvious except in action shots. I can see key problem areas of my dances to work on and also see the strengths of my competitors so that I know what to focus on.
shoe breaks? electrical tape. heel falls off? electrical tape. laces frayed? electrical tape. blister bleeds? electrical tape. toenail falls off? electrical tape. foot breaks? electrical tape. leg detaches from hip? electrical tape. wig falls off? electrical tape. life falls apart? ELECTRICAL. TAPE!
I chose my university wisely…
What people don’t always see. They forget to show the nerves, the late night self run practices, the even more nervous mothers, the hair process, and the friendships that can never be broken. All picture credit goes to Jack Reopke
the fab North american irish dance champions 2016! (just realised i forgot Gabby Strattmann when i had finished this. so im very sorry gabby :( )

Curious as to others' opinions--
I wish we did something like Ireland (though it’s hella expensive) where we have one nationals that’s open to everyone and one that’s only for people in North America. I realize it’s super fun to travel and personally, I’d love to go to All Ireland’s one day but if you look at the top 5s for most of the comps at NANs, a great majority of them, including the champion aren’t even from North America but from Ireland or Australia.. I recognize how hard everyone works but it just kinda sucks when you can only go to your own nationals (usually because of the cost of attending others) and most of the top placers are world champs from other countries.. Just my opinion, open to hear other people’s thoughts.
I’d like a closed one and an open one as well, just because I want more competitions to go to though 😜 I think it’s a good thing to have them come over. you have to rise to meet them. It keeps the standard high and this is coming from someone who had 2 current world champions in their split who are technically not from America (Canada should probably have their own too, it must suck having to come here all the time). It won’t really change much because all Irelands is still way more prestigious than irish nationals precisely because other people can come (and because it’s older). Surely it will be the same way with America.
I like the open and closed idea, too. 4 of the 5 podium placers in U19A were overseas dancers. It was fun to watch! 21% of recallers in that age group were also from overseas. I wouldn’t want the open one to disappear but would support the addition of a closed one. I also wouldn’t mind it always being in Nashville as that’s my favorite location, but with that said I’ve also loved the travel to new places! I’m with you though - I like more comps! I think it would give dancers an additional goal to strive for.
Petition to have action shots at the Oireachtas!
When your boyfriend just pulls this outta his back pocket..wtf? He was like “I couldn’t point my toes in sneakers and I completely forgot about the whole arm thing” umm yea okay bye.
