Her eyes widened for a split second, and she choked back a gasp when he switched their positions. Composure was regained in the blink of an eye. He couldn’t intimidate her. It was really fun to watch him try, but it never worked. Sure, he was going to win today, but that was something she planned to happen. It wasn’t to say he was incapable of taking control from her all on his own. It was just not in this case. “And I think you’re all talk. Don’t underestimate me.”

If there was anything that made James appreciate this girl more than he already did, it was her backbite. She was every bit as challenging as he, and he respected that. However, he wasn’t going to be the underdog in this. No, he absolutely refused. He leaned forward so that their lips were a mere centimeter or two away from touching and grinned. “I think it’s YOU who shouldn’t be underestimating ME, love.”

As agreed, Lily Evans was not late, though she didn’t exactly floo over. She figured she might as well give the pureblood the whole muggle experience, borrowing the car her parents had left her ( though, why they left her the car, Merlin only knew. She could barely drive the bloody thing ) and arriving promptly at half noon, because she wanted to spend time with him before the movie began. Though, that wasn’t something she’d entirely admit. As far as she was concerned, they were just friends. Friends who flirted a lot. 

She fixed the hem of her dress as she knocked on the door, rocking forward on the balls of her feet then back again, fixing her hair as she waited.

James was a fucking girl. Since he’d agreed on watching a horror film with Lily, he’d been anxiously awaiting the event. He’d pulled out a fair bit more hair than he meant to what with him running his hands through it all the time. They were friends, and that’s honestly the best he was going to hope for given their history, but he could always dream.

To say James was a nervous wreck the day of would have been entirely true, if not an insult to James’ pride. Did he have any anymore? When the knock came to the door, any inkling of pride vanished as he stumbled over himself to get to the door. He flung it open, and there she was, just as pretty in the flesh as she was in his memory.

“Evans.” He cleared his throat.

She turned her head away, and bit back a giggle. Now there was the dork she remembered, always trying to cover it up with his bravado. She wasn’t complaining about either though. “Damn right I am. Just don’t keep me waiting too long. Patience is a virtue that I still struggle with because I have more than a bit of fight in me.” She pushed him back the last few steps to the wall. “Go on. Prove yourself. Take charge and show me that you can be the guy who deserves me.”

James cocked an eyebrow at her, allowing a sly smirk to make its way across his face. “I’m a bit impatient, myself,” he drawled, recovering from her push and sliding his arms around her waist. He flipped them so that she was the one with her back to the wall and lowered his lips so they were hovering a few inches from her ear. “Prove myself, you say? I don’t think you could handle it.”
