It seemed to be another windy day, much to Gwen’s dismay. She held onto the fresh bouquet of chrysanthemum flowers tightly, and hurried to her desired location. Although she preferred a calmer walks, she walked quickly making her way through multiple blocks to prevent as much damage to the flowers as possible. It seemed like every time she planned on visiting her, the weather wasn’t the most pleasant. However, with a prolonged sigh, the girl continued with her strut, protecting the bouquet as if her life depended on it.
One might have wondered where she was headed during such a weather. Others knowing her, might have questioned what she was doing outside in the first place, as she didn’t have a habit of leaving her house unless necessary. Although the stroll didn’t seem significant, to Gwen this day was of outmost importance. This conclusion could be clearly drawn especially when taking into the consideration that she spent almost a whole hour picking out the perfect bouquet. Gladiolus flowers were vibrant in color, and the flower petals simply looked outstanding. The meaning was not half bad either, as they were known as symbol of strength and heroism. Gwen would have picked them without hesitation, if not for the chrysanthemums that she was currently holding onto. Equally beautiful and vibrant in color, supposedly representing sympathy, happiness, love, longevity and joy. She had to admit that these flowers reminded Gwen a lot of her.
After a while the raven haired girl reached her destination, and now found herself standing in front of an entrance to a local cemetery. Although the place wasn’t ideal for an young adult like herself, she seemed to visit it from time to time. Perhaps even more often than some of the people she knew and talked to. Not that actually any of them knew about her little strolls to the cemetery. She would never admit to them, and what purpose they served. She hasn’t even told the people closest to her, like her boss Masuo or her drug-addicted friend Daiki. The girl made sure to kept them a secret from everyone around her. It only counted that Gwen knew and she did. No one else needed to be informed or involved in her doings.
She squeezed the bouquet closer to her chest, and at once entered the cemetery. Even though she started out with her mind at peace, she couldn’t deny the clear nervousness she began to feel. It was all the same for her every time she visited. At first she would walk with certain sense of confidence, only for it to moderately change into anxiety. Gwen always thought that she was being silly for feeling this nervous. After all, she couldn’t do anything to her. Thus, she had no rational reason to feel this tense. Yet, she couldn’t help but feel this way whenever she decided to face her.
Chiyori Morikawa. The words reflected in Gwen’s eyes as she stood before her grave. The girl’s grip on the bouquet of chrysanthemums significantly tightened. She took a deep breath, before placing the flowers down, just right under these words. When her hands were freed, she seemed to instantly pick on them, as if to calm her nerves. “Hey Chiyo... it’s me again. Gwen...” she spoke quietly, even though there was no one there. She knew that Chiyo couldn’t hear her, nor react to what she was saying. She was long gone, and she couldn’t do anything anymore. She was in a deep state of slumber called death, and there was nothing more to it. Yet, despite knowing all of this, Gwen continued to come and talk to Chiyo as if she could hear her. As if she was still there...
“I brought you chrysanthemums today... they reminded me of you, you know? Like the way you’d smile so warmly, or the way you loved your friends...” she trailed off and fell silent for a while. It was always so hard for her to speak, especially to Chiyo. She wasn’t surprised by this fact at all, considering their past. The bullying and the constant rejection of her friendship, were reasons that made talking to her quite awkward. Her hands started shaking a little, and so she took a deep breath once again. As she got her composure back, she spoke again. “I am trying to take care of Daiki for you... even though I don’t really deserve his company... b-but I am there for him. Lately I’ve been making sure he eats well and all, since he kind of sucks... though, he is doing his best, so I can’t be too hard on him...” another sigh escaped her, and she decided to situate herself on the ground this time.
She paused again, and briefly looked at the sky above her. The clouds didn’t look their best, and the girl could only hope that it wouldn’t start raining soon. “He misses you a lot you know... and even if I try to be there for him, I feel lost... I was never good at these things, and to think that it was me...” her hands moved so she could stare at them. “...that ruined everything... it makes it hard for me to keep going. Sometimes I just want to run away from him... to prevent myself from messing up any worse than I already did. What if I say something wrong again? What if I do something wrong again? What if I just make him more miserable than he already is? You know...” her hands clenched into tight fists.
Sometimes I wish that it was me that died, and not you... everything would have been easier that way — Is what she wanted, but the words never left her lips. Instead, she sat there with her fists clenched, and head hanging low and eyes tightly shut. Although she was emotionally struggling, it still felt like a little bit of weight was lifted off her shoulders whenever she vented in front of Chiyo. She could tell her everything that’s been bothering her, or something that pleased her, without the fear of being heard and judged. And even though their chance at being friends was long gone, sometimes Gwen felt like moments like these brought them closer.
“I-I am sorry Chiyo... “ she whispered quietly. “I...I wish everything turned out differently...” at last, she got up from her place, and dusted off her clothing. Her eyes took a final glance at Chiyori’s grave, before she started turning around. “I just hope you are okay... wherever you are... I’ll see you again soon, okay?” and with that she walked off for today, even if her intention was to sit down in silence as per usual. However, the clouds didn’t look as promising, thus she was forced to walk off that day. At the very least she had her loyal feline companion waiting for her at home...

“A cat cafe? I’ve never been to one because Kuro-” He stopped abruptly. Kyoji stood there with his mouth agape when Suzu decided to leave the comfort of her bag. She jumped out with ease and landed gracefully on the pavement. Ah, she was awesome. The male followed her movements for a moment before she rubbed her small head against one of his legs. A warm and comfortable feeling ran through Kyoji’s body and he couldn’t hold back any longer. He lowered his body, kneeling down to Suzu’s level, where held out his hand to greet the feline properly. After assuming she approved of him, he went ahead and scratched her chin and head.
For a moment, it seemed as if his mind went other places while his body remained frozen in this position. He wondered how old the feline could be, where she was born and if she had siblings, where she was picked up from and what type of things were going through her small head. At first he didn’t even realize that the girl started talking again, and honestly he didn’t care much. But since his hearing was more than fine, he couldn’t really ignore her for long. What she said caught his interest and thus he raised his head. “… I usually don’t visit such places because I’m scared Kuro won’t like me anymore if I smell like other cats.” He fell silent again and thought for a moment, in the meantime, Suzu received all the patting she desired.
“I guess, trying it out at least once won’t hurt. I’m Kyoji by the way.” He spoke while his eyes began to shift away from Gwen slowly before locking on Suzu once again.
Although Gwen was a bit surprised that Suzu jumped out so suddenly, she had to admit that it was quite a common occurrence. This black feline simply did as she wanted, and she wouldn’t take no as an answer. That was especially true whenever she desired attention. Anything from scratching, petting, stroking or even hugging was fine by her ( when she felt like it of course ). Perhaps all of this was linked to her background as a rescue cat, from a rather saddening situation. Anyway, Gwen simply let her black cat be, and so as she pleased. Even if she couldn’t help but feel slightly envious that Suzu was putting all of her attention on the stranger she just met. Then again, it wasn’t shocking, since she did the same thing when she first met Daiki.
The girl noticed Kyoji’s reaction quite quickly, and she couldn’t help but smile. In some way she was amused at her own fear from earlier. The man that had a scary aura around him, now seemed to be a completely different person. Sweet and caring would be the words she’d use to describe him, as he pampered Suzu. This was another reason for her smile — seeing both of them in such a positive state. It couldn’t be helped, Suzu looked so adorable and happy in that moment, and Gwen seemed to soak the same energy in. “That’s understandable. All cats are very individualistic so it is natural each one will react differently. I hope that Kuro won’t be too jealous after the visit. ” she said with a little bit more confidence now, not minding him not keeping the eye contact for too long. In fact, she was grateful he didn’t.
“You can call me Gwen, it is nice to meet you Kyoji.” she said politely, starting to slowly walk towards the cat cafe, as to not disturb Suzu too much. “I think you will like our cats. They are very sweet, especially Fuwafuwa. He is a sweet cloud.”
Kyoji glanced at the girl again, her expression changed completely and she seemed more distressed than before. A sigh left him. So she was one of those… he thought before he put his phone back into his pocket. He didn’t realize that his words or actions could have caused her to feel uncomfortable at first, but since he wasn’t dumb, he slowly but surely put the pieces together, even though he still didn’t quite understand the other’s feelings. Her sudden apology felt out of place and he didn’t know what to do or how to act now. Why was she apologizing in the first place? There wasn’t any need for it, or was there?
He remained quiet while the girl continued to talk. Hm. So that’s it? He’d simply part ways with the feline and return home, where he’d sit in his dark room all by himself until a new day began? Lame. He wasn’t in the mood to walk home anymore and even though he didn’t want to be stuck in a boring conversation, it seemed like that was exactly what was going to happen now. “You keep mentioning your work. What’s it about? How come you can take… uh, Suzu? Is it fine if you take her to your workplace?” He tried to be more polite now. Though, it was just a matter of time until he’d act rude again.
While Gwen continued to have a mental breakdown, her feline friend got bored of the bag. She was much rather interested in leaving the bag. Perhaps it was the attention she was receiving from the stranger that made her displeased with her current location. Suzu’s bell made a slight noise, and in the next moment a gentle “meow” reached Gwen’s ears. At first she gave her a puzzled look, but then she concluded that the cat demanded a closer look at the man. Gwen was painfully aware of Suzu’s preference for new people, especially ones that would dot on her. Thus, the cat was finally out of the bag — and now on the ground, rubbing against the male’s legs. Traitor, Gwen sighed.
Her attention shifted from her best friend to the stranger. It seemed like he was interested about her workplace. Though, Gwen thought that he was more intrigued where her beautiful cat was going. His tone was gentler too, and because of that Gwen’s mind was noticeably more at peace. “Oh, I work at a local cat cafe. Suzu works there too.” she stated simply, and then pointed towards the direction. “It’s right there. I am friends with the manager, and he lets me bring Suzu in so she can play with other cats instead of staying at home all alone.” she paused for a second. He seemed like a cat lover, himself owning a black cat. Would it be so bad to invite him there? Him and Suzu clearly seemed to hit it off, and maybe he is not as scary as she thought. Clearly he was here for the cat, and not because he had ill intentions towards her. “If you want, you could tag along if you have the time. Suzu seems to have taken a liking to you...”
He felt great joy watching the cute feline with it’s ears perking towards his direction. What a smart one, quite social too, he thought to himself. The cat must be used to being around people, since it didn’t seem scared by a stranger approaching it. The lovely atmosphere was disrupted by the sound of someone’s voice. Kyoji blinked, then his eyes rolled in a rather annoyed manner. The girl replied in a way as if she were the one receiving the compliment, when in truth, he was just talking to her cat. People were truly so self-centered. “I wasn’t talking to you, idiot.” The rude comment slipped his tongue with ease and he didn’t care if it sounded impolite. After all, she was the rude one for feeling addressed when he didn’t even talk to her in the first place.
With hands in his pockets, he looked the other up and down. She seemed tired and gloomy. Compared to her cat, she appeared like a total mess and not charming at all. He was kinda curious about her work though, since not many workplaces allowed pets. But he didn’t feel like striking up a conversation with a random stranger and to pretend like he’s interested in them. Instead, he took out his phone and opened pictures of his own cat. He then held the phone in front of the feline, ignoring once again what the girl was talking about. “Look, that’s Kuro. He’s got black fur too, isn’t that cool?”
To say that Gwen was petrified at the other’s tone, and the fact that she was mistaken about the compliment was an understatement. At this very moment, the girl wanted to crawl under several layers of the ground beneath her, and just hide there until the other was gone for good. In all honesty, she didn’t expect the compliment to be directed at her, since she was quite hideous in her own opinion — ugly on the inside and outside. However, she didn’t expect the stranger to talk to Suzu in first person like this. Usually, if people wanted to express their excitement for the cat, they would say something like Your cat is so cute! or Excuse me miss, but I must say your cat here looks simply stunning. What do you do to keep their fur this shiny? She never encountered someone that would talk to the cat, as if she was owning Gwen and not the other way around.
“I... I am sorry I didn’t realize” was all she mutter in her state of pure despair. She just wanted to leave at this point, but if she left who was to say he would leave her alone? He seemed weird, and quite rude so she couldn’t be assured that he wouldn’t do something bad. Then, out of nowhere, the other pulled out his phone and showed it to Suzu instead of Gwen. That’s bizarre, and frankly, Gwen didn’t know how to react. Sure, she would show pictures to Suzu from time to time, but not in public! His cat was quite cute though... “Not to bother you two in the middle of the conversation, about your beautiful cat, but Suzu really should be going. As much as she’d love to see more of Mister Kuro, she has another important day at work... so...” she trailed off, suddenly feeling quite hopeless. Somehow she felt like she will be called a name again, or ignored, and she will simply end up being late.
Kyoji was strolling through the empty afternoon streets. He just finished one of of his ‘art’ pieces, aka he successfully vandalized some empty boring wall with graffiti. He already got rid of the spray cans, now the only thing left on his to-do list was to grab food and going home. Today was… not quite eventful to say the least. And even though he enjoyed spraying graffiti, it didn’t get rid of the empty feeling he felt inside.
With a sigh, he crossed the street and turned the next corner. That’s when he spotted a girl carrying a bag. His heart skipped a beat upon catching a glimpse of the bag’s inside. Without wasting another thought, he casually approached the other. “Hey. You’re really cute.” He spoke, as he locked eyes with the black cat which sat inside the bag, ignoring the girl’s presence completely.
Gwen was making her way to the cat cafe as per usual, holding onto a spacious bag that carried her best friend — the black feline Suzu. Her little bell would make a sound occasionally as they made their way through the various streets, some more uneven than others. It seemed like the cat was enjoying herself, as she was situated comfortably in the bag. Usually, Gwen would be seen with her cat walking beside her to get some additional exercise, but today Suzu decided that she would like to get some rest before her eventful day at work. Sometimes, Gwen envied her cat and the soft interior of the bag, but it always ended at that. She loved Suzu with her whole heart, and she wouldn’t deny her the luxury, even if at times she felt tired.
The day seemed to carry out like any other, until a stranger approached her out of the blue. As if on command, Gwen stiffened and she looked visibly uncomfortable. She was very untrusting of others, and quite anxious when alone. Thus, it took her a moment before deciding what she should do, namely running away or trying to be polite. You never know who the other person could be thinking. “Uh...um, thank you, but me and Suzu have to go now... we might be late for work.” perhaps this will make the stranger go away?
