“Okay, listen up,” Toulouse muttered, hands fumbling with his worn, leather wallet, “I’m going to give you a crisp Benjamin if you can talk to me for the next fifteen minutes. All you need to do is talk- really. No strings attached. You can walk around if you’d like, ask me some questions, just lord whatever you can do to pass the time until my boss realizes their shift is over and they can leave me the hell alone. Deal?”

Shaking his head at Toulouse’s offer, Kit assured him, “No need-- I’ll do it for free. Trust me, I’ve been there, so it’s the least I can do,” he lamented, understanding all too well. “So what the hell is your boss doing to you to make you want to get away from them that badly?”

“OUCH! Seriously?!” a hand went straight to her shoulder, now aching from the abrupt collision with the man, “ever heard of watching where you’re going?” he probably had, and then again, Anna wasn’t watching where she was going either- now was she?

“I’m so sorry-- I should have been looking where I was going,” Kit admitted immediately, glancing over at her to make sure she was alright. He wasn’t usually this careless, but he was in such a hurry that he didn’t even see her coming. “Are you okay? I didn’t hurt you or anything, did I?”

Bounding down the stairs of his apartment complex in Hyperion Plaza and heading out the door, Kit was so preoccupied that he didn’t even notice the other person walking towards him out of the corner of his eye. Quickly pulling out his ear buds and taking a step back, he offered them an apologetic grin, relieved that he hadn’t knocked them over in his haste. “Whoa-- sorry about that. Guess I should be more careful. You alright?” he asked with sincerity.

“In my heart the fire is burning,” he joined in, flashing a cheeky grin over at his friend. Ever the romantic, Kit couldn’t resist singing along. He had always been a fan of love songs, which was luckily something the two friends agreed on.

“Do I feel old? Maybe. But I am still strong and able!” Bob said enthusiastically to the person he was chatting with. “Do I miss my old job? Heck yeah, but I also like spending time with my kids. It can be a tricky compromise sometimes, but I make it work,” he rambled on.

“Where did you used to work?” Kit asked the older man curiously. “Well, at least you have your family. Having a great job isn’t really all that fulfilling if you don’t have people in your life to share your accomplishments with,” he remarked. Although he was nowhere ready to have a family of his own, Kit wondered if that’s what would make his life feel whole.

       ❝ ˛✦ ⊰  AS HER LAST NAME, which conveniently doubled as a nickname, tumbled from the guy’s lips a smile grew even wider on her features. even though kit and her were more of… acquaintances rather than friends ( for they only met a couple times before, and each time because of ella ) the brunette sure wanted to get to know him better. maybe today could be the day to start it off. “ oh – not very much, frankly. i’ve been reading a lot, helping out my mother around the house… “, she explained, lifting her shoulders. “ what about you ? “.

Kit had only really seen Wendy at different parties around town-- with Ella in tow, of course, tearing up the dancefloor-- but he certainly didn’t mind the chance to get to know the younger girl better. Kit prided himself in becoming friends with everyone he met, and Wendy seemed like a great girl. "Well I hope you’ve made some time for good ol’ fashioned mischief during your summer. The season is never complete without it at your age,” he remarked with a warm grin. “Eh, mostly just working. Adult life is not all it’s cut out to be, but it has it’s perks.”

“ that’s very true, so i guess it really does start when you walk in, ” she replied with that same smile adorning her lips as she did so. maybe that was why she was so drawn to kit the first time she saw him, because he was quite literally at the centre of the party. “ but that is why auto-tune exists, i don’t think many pop stars can sing quite as well as we imagine. however, if you’re planning a themed party any time soon, i’m really rooting for this theme to be a thing. i can just envisage glitter everywhere. ” the girl found herself collecting her bag & wandering over to a bench a few steps from them, popping down on it somewhat assuming he may do the same. “ yeah, i can imagine it was a little shock to the system ! don’t worry, ” she replied with a soft hint of laughter within her tone, her gaze flickering briefly over his running attire with appreciation, “ what you’re wearing is just fine also, though i’d hazard a guess & say not quite as smart as a suit, change of plan, maybe your next party should be a suit theme, ” ella couldn’t help the teasing note that hung within her tone, though she really couldn’t stop the blush over her cheeks because she was intrigued. “ i didn’t doubt for one second that you did. i couldn’t picture you as the type to do that. what do you market for, anyway ? ” honestly she was utterly enthralled by him, always wanting to know a little more about the person he was. “ but everyone focuses on the negatives more than the positives, it’s just human nature. i saw something today that was like, tell yourself you get to do something rather than you have to do something. it put things in perspective knowing you’re doing stuff other people can’t. ” ella often found herself drifting into despair, whether it be because of a bad day or bad treatment, but finding that little motivational incline helped her hugely. “ gosh, this has turned a bit deep. ”

“Maybe, but I also know that the party doesn’t really kick off until you take the dance floor,” he complimented, a warm grin tugging at the ends of his lips. Maybe that’s why the two were so entranced by one another: they couldn’t seem to escape the spotlight. “Auto-tune is the worst, though. It never sounds convincing, and if I were a hypothetical pop star, I’d much rather be one of the genuinely talented ones. I think you just gave me the theme for my next party, though. I can see it now: everyone covered in glitter, with gaudy costumes and colorful face paint,” he mused, a delighted smile lighting up his features. Before he had a chance and offer to carry her bags for her, Kit found himself taking a seat on the bench next to her. Quirking a brow when she assured him that his running attire was just fine, Kit couldn’t help but smirk at her appreciation. “Well, I’m glad to see that all those hours at the gym are good for something,” he remarked with a light-hearted chuckle at the sight of the flush on her cheeks. “How about for the party after that, we have a black tie dress code? Full length ballgowns, champagne towers. And if you think suits are nice, you’d love me in a tux,” he boasted with a bright smile, knowing that Ella was a lover of gorgeous party  dresses. “Well I’m glad. We basically run marketing campaigns for local businesses,” he said, surprised that she was so genuinely interested by his work. People usually didn’t ask about his professional life-- other than his father’s friends when he stopped by the country club. “I should really remind myself of that more often. This has been my reality for so long, it’s hard to think of things like work as something I get to do, but you’re right: there are always people who have things worse,” he agreed, delighted by her ability to turn something that seemed like a source of displeasure into something that he was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do. “I don’t mind-- I think I really needed to hear that.”

“At least I get to learn something new from those textbooks, something that will hopefully be useful.” That was the positive way to look at things, and the way that she wanted to think. “If you like, I can lend you a book to read for the purpose of pleasure? I am not sure about your book taste but I think at least one of my favorites would be something you would enjoy.“ She was hopeful as she said that because she wanted to save him from the boredom. Even if it was just for a few hours. “It’s sad that being what should be a decent human being is considered noble now but thank you. I will mark your word.” His last few sentences made her a little disappointed, but she did not let that ruin the mood. “You can do the 5-minute date like Ted did with Stella in How I Met Your Mother!’

“You’re a lot more optimistic than I was at the prospect of spending all summer reading textbooks,” Kit remarked, though he wasn’t the least bit surprised. Jenny had always been a diligent student, eager to learn new things, and she had a way of finding the best in nearly everything. “I’d love to read one of your favorites. I usually stick to classic romances and epics, but I’m open to reading something new,” he replied, confident that he’d enjoy anything that Jenny would pick out for him. They tended to think very similarly, even though Jenny could be more cautious than he was. “Well, not many people are as generous as you, so it’s still a pretty noble undertaking,” Kit declared. “That’s not a bad idea... although I’d much rather end up like Lily and Marshal than Ted and Stella,” he remarked, though he took her suggestion into consideration. “Maybe I can do like a speed dating round next time I see her or something.”

“ Says the guy who’s almost at the top! You’ve only got a little left, don’t doubt yourself now! ”She practically shouted from below, shooing him higher. She really didn’t want him to lose focus and end up hurting himself.

“That doesn’t mean my calves aren’t on fire!” Kit shot down at her in a teasing tone, but he had to admit that he was incredibly close to the finish line. Only a few more footholds, and he’d be at the top. Placing his foot on the next one, he replied, “Alright, I’m headed to the top!”
