Discussion with Learning Partner - Trends in Adult Education
I had the pleasure of speaking with Joni, my learning partner, who works in Hospitality Management. She is an instructor at VanWest College and is currently collaborating with Coast Coal Harbour Hotel to provide students with shadowing and fieldwork opportunities. We discussed key trends in our industry and how we are preparing students to meet evolving workplace expectations.
Joni emphasized the importance of Competency-Based Education (CBE), which focuses on students demonstrating mastery of specific skills. We agreed that hands-on learning gives students a deeper understanding of course concepts and helps them see the purpose behind classroom structure. By engaging in real-world experiences, students can apply theory in practice while receiving guidance and evaluation from their instructors. This approach helps them build professional judgment and interpersonal skills that will support their future careers.
I also share her perspective, and in the VCC Culinary Arts Program, we operate an active cafeteria and a restaurant classroom that are open to the public, giving students valuable workplace exposure. Signage indicates that the space is student‑run, helping the public understand that it is a not‑for‑profit learning kitchen. Public feedback helps us assess and evaluate the student’s performance during service. This encourages the students to review and reflect on their learning, identify areas for improvement, and strengthen the skills they will carry into future workplace settings.
Joni and I both felt that hands‑on learning enriches students by linking theory to real‑world application. Meaningful feedback further supports their professional growth, helping them become well prepared for the realities of the industry. The CBE approach continues to be an effective framework for both educators and learners, reinforcing the development of practical skills and workplace readiness.
