I know this should be expected, as this is a predominantly US-American website, but every time we have discourse about revolutions, I am struck by how clear it is that no one on this website has ever lived through one.
Revolution doesn't mean burn it all down and create everything new from scratch. You still have hospitals and insulin after a revolution.
Hell, often services like hospitals are the only things to stay functioning 24/7 during a revolution. When my state was undergoing one, there were times the banks didn't work, plenty of times that the city council collapsed or that schools were temporarily closed, but hospitals would stay open until they got hit with missiles or met another similar fate; doctors worked out of basements. You are all creating boogeymen in your heads to justify your complacency.

The bolsheviks won the civil war while fighting against most of the western world, the the DPRK and PRC managed to hold of most of the imperialist world, Vietnamese communists defeated the imperial japanese, the french and the imperial hegemon that is the usa all three of which were better equipped and were more experienced than the Vietnamese. Has any anarchist movement ever achieved something like this? The answer is a resounding no! Should a movement that cant defend itself not be ridiculed when it trips and falls at the first and most important step after achieving power, that being retaining it. Should we pat anarchists on the head and say "You'll get them next time !" when it fails and dooms the proletariat to a wave of right wing terror again and again? What Marxist-Leninists and "Stalinists" have done after failing is learn and adapt and come up with new strategies. What have anarchists done after failing other than continue to hue and cry over the fact that the they lost and continue on their anti-hierarchy tirade.
sure, point taken. where is the communism though? where is the soviet union? why do all the AES states need pages of asterisks and qualifiers to their socialism that too often ends with concurring with the liberals that it "only works on paper?" If your new strategy is just lowering your expectations, how much do you really have to teach the annoying anarchists? I just think this knowing tone does not fit the reality of a political tradition that is defined by repeated defeat and failures, and I think the pretension of a scientific method for waging revolution creates the expectation that at some point it would yield durable results beyond detente with capital.

Frankly I think suggesting there aren't "durable results beyond detente with capital" treats the actual lived experience of billions of people under socialism as an insignificance, very much an "anonymised people of the global south" moment.
Is it not a "durable result" that countless families in China whose lives revolved around hard subsistence farming for generations are now able to comfortably pursue education with easy access to all necessities? Is every life saved by Cuba's world-renowned medical system not a "durable result"? Is the end of Japanese colonialism in Vietnam and North Korea not a "durable result"?
what if i say those are good things, and yet they don't have much bearing on my political beliefs and practice because i don't live in those times and places. i need a politics that i can wield effectively, and if marxism's destiny in every case is to end in a shrug, i'm fine without.
like, the korean peninsula is still occupied. i'm not saying i have The One True Way that korea could liberate itself from imperialism, but the standard for victory has been objectively lowered, and therefore i don't think marxists can justifiably claim that revolutionary efficacy is a matter of ideological correctness.
I like how out of all the successes I listed, you pick the one incomplete one to say it's not good enough and just handwave away the rest with "I don't live there so it doesn't really matter to me". Is the tangible improvement of the lives of billions not proof enough that the theories underpinning it can be wielded effectively when effectively used to analyse the local material conditions? The task of any revolutionary is to develop an understanding of their conditions that will allow them to apply theory successfully and build a revolutionary movement, the fact that it has happened successfully in multiple countries proves that it's possible, so it's absurd to throw out the entire theory just because you can't manage to do it where you are, and frankly the entire argument smacks of impcore solipsism.
Marxism is the only theory which has led to revolutions capable of defending themselves and making gains in the long term, that's just a historical fact, and I don't see why you're treating it as a thing of the past - why are you assuming Marxism has "ended" at all, let alone "with a shrug"? Nobody has claimed total victory, nobody denies that the road is yet long and difficult, but you may have noticed that Cuba and the DPRK are still here and as vehemently committed to socialism and opposition to Western imperialism as ever. You're the one proclaiming the fight to be over, not us.

Absolutely. Anarchist theory is applicable to everyday life. Its strength over communist theory is its investigation of power. Marx and Mao have nothing to tell me about engaging in good faith arguments or meeting people where they're at or embracing dissent in order to deepen understanding and broaden praxis. Anarchism, exemplified by the decentralized, non-hierarchical and Indigenous-led organizing of the Zapatistas, teaches us to avoid the accumulation of power. If there were ever some bullshit anarchist revolution that produced the KGB or the Cultural Revolution, we'd know that revolution to be a betrayal. Endurance is not a sign of success. Capitalism also endures, in the same way that communism endures. Not through winning hearts but through brutality.
See these are some interesting ideas, mostly because they are based in idealism and dont take into account the material reality in which we live in, you cant just take every argument in good faith because not every argument is made in good faith you cant just embrace dissent should the PRC have embraced dissent when the counterrevolutionaries in Tiananmen square cried for more liberalization? No! Is endurance a sign of success? No. Is endurance requiered to achieve success? Yes.

I am a romanian so i know a bit about how living in a country post colour revolution is and i will say i am glad the PRC put its colour revolution down because if it had succeeded the peoples of the PRC would have had to suffer untold ammounts of pain.

My 4-year-old sister is suffering from malnutrition and severe psychological trauma. She’s more afraid than she’s ever been in almost two years of genocide, now refusing to let go of my mother and screaming at the slightest sound of gunshot. Her spine is showing through her skin, her whole body is weak and too small for her age and she’s been extremely depressed, glaring at everyone, refusing to play, crying for just one bite of the bread we can’t have. Smallpox is spreading and I’m afraid she won’t survive if she catches it when she’s already so weak.
Please help me provide at least something for her. Seeing her in this state hurts so, so much. I wouldn’t ask if I had any other choice but we burn through our money fast because of rent and the insane inflation, $1,000 in my area for 25kg of flour. We also need to buy medicine when we can find it because everyone is sick due to the harsh conditions.
