Ben Carson says poverty is a “state of mind”
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson said that poverty is a “state of mind” in an interview on SiriusXM Radio.
“I think poverty to a large extent is also a state of mind,” Carson said in an interview with Armstrong Williams, Carson’s longtime friend, according to the Washington Post.
“You take somebody that has the right mindset, you can take everything from them and put them on the street and I guarantee in a little while they’ll be right back up there.”
He continued that impoverished people “with the wrong mindset” will fail.
“You take somebody with the wrong mindset, you can give them everything in the world, they’ll work their way right back down to the bottom,” Carson said.
As HUD secretary, Carson is tasked with helping create affordable housing for low-income and impoverished Americans. Read more (5/24/17)

don’t be poor 😔 buy a house! 😜 live in it 🔥👌🏻❤️
Ben I’m going to need to see you test that theory out extensively.
OKAY THERE IS A REASON FOR THIS. I AM NOT SAYING HE IS RIGHT, BECAUSE HE ISN’T, BUT HE IS NOT THE FIRST PERSON TO SAY THIS AND HE WILL NOT BE THE LAST.
In the 1960s, sociologist Oscar Lewis proposed the culture of poverty thesis (1), which states that IN THE PRESENCE OF SYSTEMIC SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC BARRIERS TO SUCCESS, people who live in poverty develop a mentality and lifestyle in REACTION TO THOSE SYSTEMIC CONDITIONS.
This mentality includes instant gratification (spend money on what you need now because you don’t know when you’ll get money again), dejection (because generations’ worth of hard work have not been enough to get you out of poverty), anger (because how fucking hard should it be to get out of poverty in the goddamned ‘land of opportunity’), and rebellion (if I play by the rules and I’m STILL fucked, then fuck you, I’m throwing out the rules and doing what I want with my life).
THIS HAS BEEN OBSERVED. People who are faced with intergenerational barriers react to those barriers, because IT IS VERY HARD NOT TO REACT TO THINGS. Obviously, not everyone who experiences poverty reacts the same way, but intergenerational poverty tends to result in similar mentalities. Please note that in the US, a significant portion of intergenerational poverty is experienced by Black people, because as a nation we are still very much experiencing the effects of slavery, particularly in the form of residential segregation (2).
The thesis THEN goes on to say that EVENTUALLY, THIS MENTALITY CAN BECOME AN INDEPENDENT FACTOR OF POVERTY.
This is true, but THIS IS ALSO WHERE LITERALLY EVERYONE GETS IT WRONG.
Since the publication of this thesis, people have routinely ignored the first tenet and only focused on the second, and use it as a way to blame poor people for their poverty. So let’s compare:
What the thesis actually says: long-term structural barriers prevent certain groups of people from rising out of poverty. In response to long-term poverty, these people adopt certain habits, attitudes, and beliefs that affect how they interact with the economy. If the structural barriers remain in place, these adjusted mindsets can themselves become a barrier.
What people THINK the thesis says: poor people are poor because they have bad values.
THIS IS INCREDIBLY RACIALIZED. A very common term you hear thrown about is “defective culture.” Poor people are poor because they have a “defective culture.” Black people are often poor, therefore they have a “defective culture.” “Black culture is a defective culture.”
And then suddenly you have a bunch of white assholes running around, blaming Black ppl for their own poverty while simultaneous justifying their own fucked up beliefs about white superiority, and backing it up with “”“sociological evidence.”“”
THIS IS WRONG.
If you want to quote the culture of poverty thesis, you NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE EXISTENCE OF STRUCTURAL BARRIERS. These include residential segregation (especially redlining, and the historical practice of concentrating Black communities in areas of deteriorating industry and unhealthy environments), hiring discrimination (a white man with a felony record is more likely to get hired than an otherwise identical Black man WITHOUT criminal record) (3), and the paradox of educational requirements (you need a good job to get out of poverty, but to get a good job you need a college education, but to get a college education you need to be able to pay for college, but you’re literally living paycheck to paycheck and can’t save any money because you need every goddamn cent because you’re living in POVERTY).
Who imposed (and maintain) these barriers?
🎊WHITE PEOPLE!!!🎊
But not just any white people!
🎉🎊WHITE PEOPLE WITH POLITICAL POWER!!!🎊🎉
But wait - which white people have political power?
👏🏻🎉🎊THE ONES WHO CAN AFFORD THE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE AND EXPENSES REQUIRED TO RUN FOR POLITICAL OFFICE!!!!!🎊🎉👏🏻
So who’s to blame for the poverty of Black people?
🙌🏻👏🏻🎉🎊RICH WHITE PEOPLE (who are often but not exclusively men)!!!🎊🎉👏🏻🙌🏻
and that is how you do sociology thank you and good night

p.s. yes I am aware that Ben Carson is Black but that doesn’t mean he isn’t profiting from and perpetuating the rhetoric of rich white politicians who have been keeping Black people impoverished for CENTURIES because it fit their personal and political agendas.
DAMN YOU JUST SLAMAJAMMED THAT TALKING POINT.
Damien turned 2 a few days ago and the love of my life turned 24 a couple days ago, also. ❤️ You could say it's been amazing. ☺️ Next is Seth and Damien's birthday party and Seth's actual birthday! Woo hoo!
So we got kittens!! They're both bobtail cats (the mom was one, too). The black one is Ichi and Seth named the gray one MeowMeow. They got forcibly pulled from their mother early so it's taken a lot to take care of them. Damien wants to just hold them all the time.. And by hold them I mean: squeeze them to death with love. 😭 Also, you hear Curious George in the background? That's Every. Single. Day. 😅
Terrible Twos
I forgot how awful the terrible twos are. My almost 2-year old (Damien) keeps throwing eggs on the floor and throwing a fit to eat them. Help. 😭

In just a week and couple days my middle son will be 2 years old. 😭 Why does the time have to go by so quickly? Then about a week and a half after that my oldest will be turning 5 and Evan and I will be celebrating our 3rd anniversary. Summer is such a busy time for us with all these events going on. OH and we are getting two kitten. 😍 I haven't had a pet cat since I was in middle school so I'm very excited about that. Seth is just as excited as me, I think. He loves cats (got it from his momma). I'm a little concerned because Damien doesn't understand how to be easy with animals yet but I suppose he will figure it out when he gets scratched. I hate for that to be the way he learns but mine and Evan's prompting and scolding on how to treat animals only goes so far. Currently trying to figure out what kind of cake I want to get the kids. I'm thinking Blaze but I'll ask Seth just to be sure. 😁 As long as it's something Damien will be excited for, too. They're having their birthdays together this year. Fenyx has learned to roll over onto his belly and back onto his back. He's rolling all over his crib. It's crazy! But I'm very happy he's moving right along 😁 Hes getting better at sitting up, too. I swear, I have the happiest baby. He smiles at anything and anyone and he laughs constantly. ❤️ Anywho, until next time, Tumblr. ✌️

It's been awhile since I've updated my Tumblr. It's been two weeks since I got my tubes tied and the doctor has released me saying that I'm healed. No more babies for this momma. Fenyx is 3 months old now and Seth is turning 5 June 13th and Damien is turning 2 June 1st. Evan is turning 24 June 2nd. Our 3 year anniversary is June 12th. June is a very busy time for us. 😩 Hopefully Evan and I will have our life together soon. I'm ready to get back to work so we can afford to live the life I want for us and the kids. It's going to be rough (I want a 1st shift position and Evan works 2nd shift) but it'll be totally worth it in the end. Until next time, Tumblr. ✌️
My big boy isn't a preschooler anymore 😭
The love of my life. ❤️
Surgery
I find out last week that I'm going to need surgery. I already knew I was going to have surgery because I was wanting to have my tubes tied (three children is enough children) but what surprised me was when my doctor said I had a hernia in my belly button. It needed to be removed. But that's not going to fix the real problem. The real problem is my recti diastasis caused by me being pregnant with my last two babies so close together (18 month difference). Recti diastasis is a condition where your abdominal muscles (what gives you a six-pack and holds in your guts) separate. My separation is 3 fingers wide meaning you can put three fingers between my ab muscles. Until the separation is fixed I will continually have hernias in my belly button. 😫 I go to a general surgeon March 7th to get his opinion and to see if they can do all my surgeries at once. Wish me luck. Until next time, Tumblr. ✌️

My body, my mind, and my soul are all EXHAUSTED. Fenyx is now 1 month old and he isn't sleeping as much at night as he was. I feel was so spoiled this past month now. Damien is still a little sick with a cold but Seth has still been okay, thank goodness. My boyfriend hasn't been getting up with the baby at night. Mostly because I always take over because he falls asleep while trying to feed the baby. Every time. So, it's up to me as Mama Bear to take care of the little ones at night and wake up with the big ones in the morning. It's really taking its toll on me. I just want a couple nights of deep and uninterrupted sleep. It doesn't look like I'll be getting that anytime soon, though. Until next time, Tumblr. 😴
It’s not a radical idea that if someone works 40 hours a week that person should not be living in poverty.

I completely agree with this concept. When I was pregnant with my first child and the first couple years of his life I worked at McDonalds. I worked there for 5 years. I worked as a crew memeber, then crew trainer, then crew chief, then as a manager. Every time I would get a pay raise and still that wasn't enough to live off of for me and my son. 😕
SOS sickness!!!
Ever since Fenyx was born I’ve kept him at home so he wouldn’t get sick. I’ve never had a baby in the middle of winter before so I was worried sick about him getting RSV. So many young babies in our town were getting sick with it and being hospitalized.
Well, first Seth (my oldest) got sick so I asked my Mom if she would keep him while he got better so he wouldn’t be around the baby. He was there for a couple days and got better. No one else got sick with what he had. (Stomach virus)
A couple days ago, Damien (my middle son) went to my boyfriend’s mom’s house to spend the night. No big deal, right? I was thrilled to have a break from my terrorizing 1-year old. The day after he came back from her house he had very slight congestion. I thought maybe it was allergies (it has been unseasonably warm). Well then I wake up with sore throat the day after that. I realized too late that he had a cold.
Now, days since Damien first displayed sickness symptoms Fenyx (the baby) is congested. My quarantine failed. Very disheartening. But at least it’s only a cold.
Hopefully, Evan (my boyfriend) doesn’t get sick as well. I need to deep clean the house sometime soon so the germs don’t spread anymore. 😩
