The significance of digital divide and digital equlity
When you see the terms “digital divide” and “digital equality”, you might have some basic concepts about these two terms by splitting words. “Digital”+ “divide”, you might think about the difference of people’s access to technology. According to the article “The SAGE Encyclopedia of Educational Technology-Digital Divide”, from Dr. Pazurek and Solen, the term was initially used to describe the gap of various people having different levels and opportunities to access technology and internet (Pazurek & Feyissa, 2015). “Digital”+ “equality”, you might think about the same and equal opportunities to use technology. According to ICF, digital equality describes that everyone has the equal opportunity to use technology and acquire technology skills in their life. No matter what cultural background you come from, how is your socioeconomic status, or what is your race, you all have the same access to the internet ( Ankit Rajput, 2021).
Digital divide and digital equality are closely related. If we have the problem of digital divide, which means we also cannot achieve the goal of digital equality. Vise versa, if we achieve the goal of digital equality, we also do not have the social problem of digital divide in our life. In today’s society, technology cannot be more important than it used to be. According to Scientific American, one of the most important factors that determine one’s position in society is their access to technology. I personally agree with this opinion. Indeed, as the internet and social media largely applied in many aspects of our daily life. The ability of using social media has become an important factor influencing our income, our job opportunities, the way we receive and pay money, and our ways of accessing news and other information.
Think about a decade ago, the way that people look for a new job, usually through friends recommendation, or looking for employment information in the newspaper. The way has been dramatically changed. Nowadays, nearly all young people looking for jobs on social media, such as Handshake, Linkedin. There are many great platforms that allow employees to find jobs, and employers employ employees. Take my own experience as an example, I have a part time job operating a social media application for an education institution. I found the job on social media I already work for almost 2 years. But the interesting thing is I never meet my head person before, I even don’t know what she looks like. The reason is we only work online together. She is living in Beijing. I am living in Minnesota. We only communicate online. That is a very good experience about working through social media, and proves the convenience and opportunities that technology brings me. I can work online, which save money and time. However, if I do not have access of internet, can I still find this job? Definity no. Even I find the job, if I don’t know how to use social media, can I work online? The answer is no.
Therefore, access to the internet can bring a lot to people. With the skills of using technology, we have more opportunities and choices in our life!
