“Sh, Shh, I know.” Breha had felt nothing but fear since Leia had joined the Rebellion, and while it made her heart ache to think Leia had to make a decision she never should have had to make. They all were safe, at least for the moment.

“You need to rest, Starshine. I’ll be right here when you wake up, just close your eyes.”

It was a moment of vulnerability she only willingly afforded herself around her parents.  Leia pressed her face into her mother’s shoulder and sniffled again, nodding and letting her mother hold her.  “Okay, Mama.”  Leia said softly, yawning and starting to doze off.

"My baby," Breha cooed softly as Leia drifted off. Her poor child had been through so much today, and now Alderaan was fully in the Empire's grip, but Breha knew that they would fight and regain their planet, she just had to be patient.

"Would you like me to sing to you?"

“Luke, come here, my darling.” Breha called to her eldest, who was playing in the gardens below.

“There’s someone here to see you.”

The child heard his mother call out for him. He had been playing, but also picking some flowers from the garden, causing some dirt to get on his clothes. Not that he personally cared being young. Besides, Luke really enjoyed the gardens and pretty much being outside in nature.

“Coming Mama!” He called back before standing up after with a hand full of flowers. He was a well behaved and sweet child and prince.

Obeying his mother’s wishes, he went back inside the palace and went up to where his mother. Breha could easily see the dirt that clung to his clothes. Even so, Luke offered her bright smile and held the flowers he had picked out for her as a gift, which hopefully made up for how dirty he was.

Luke was a rambunctious boy, had been since he was old enough to crawl. So Breha was not surprised to see the dirt clinging to his clothes.

At least their guest wasn't someone important like a dignitary or a representative of the Empire.

Accepting the gift the queen kissed Luke's cheek.

"Thank you, my darling, I want to introduce you to your new teacher. This is Lady Tsabin, she'll be teaching you court etiquette."

They’d had barely any time together since Leia’s rescue thanks to the Empire’s attack upon Yavin 4, but now that the Death Star had been destroyed - Leia had a time to actually breathe.  If she thought too hard about everything, the destruction of Dantooine would weigh heavily on her as she hoped no one had been on the planet - but for now she just allowed her mother to fuss over her.

The queen hugged her and Leia let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, curling her hands in her mother’s clothes and feeling tears prick at her eyes.  “I was so worried, Mama.  They had it pointed at Alderaan - I..”

All these years later, Alderaanians still spoke of “the accident” in hushed tones. It was the moment the monarchy nearly ended without an heir, the day when a beloved princess – even more beloved than Leia herself, as Leia well knew – had nearly died. Her mother had fallen while completing her Challenge of the Body; the resulting injuries could’ve  claimed her life. She’d been saved through quick action by the guards observing at a distance, but some of the damage had bee permanent. It was after the accident that Breha’s heart and lungs had been replaced by the pulmonodes that still glowed faintly in her chest. And it was due to the accident that her parents had elected to adopt a child rather than strain Breha’s body further.
