“I guess the war changed you too, Granger.” He mumbles.

Hermione’s eyes look over to his, it was like a silent battle between caramel and silver, fighting for who will break eye contact first.

“Guess so.” She tries to brush it off, why would she tell him out of all people, its not like he’d be understanding, it was Malfoy for Merlins sake, yet she felt like maybe he’d understand, even a little.

Rebuilding her life was the last thing Hermione wanted. The war had took its toll on everyone, but some wounds refused to heal. Months after the Battle of Hogwarts, the scar on her arm continues to be as raw as ever. It’s a constant reminder of all of the things she’s lost. Returning to Hogwarts for her last year is hard enough, but having the position of Head girl leaves Hermione with responsibilities she no longer has the strength to uphold. Then she finds out who she’s working with. Draco Malfoy. The position gives him a chance at redemption, Draco is nothing like the boy she once knew. He’s no longer full of sharp insults and arrogant smirks. In their place is someone quiet, withdrawn, and carrying scars of his own. Hermione should hate him for all he’s done. She certainly tries to. But as the months go by and the walls between them begin to break down, she finds herself drawn to the mystery of who Draco has become, she wonders being able to heal is possible for either of them.

This piece started at least a solid year ago, if not nearly two, vaguely inspired by the various imagined meetings in Narcissa's garden. I ended up picking it back up a month ago, said what on earth was I doing and redrew nearly the entire thing. This time pulled references and I think it improved the outcome quite a bit. It isn't my best work but I am always pleased to finish an unfinished piece.
