Reblog this if you’re pro-receiving a brown paper package containing one (1) handwritten love letter, a small jar of strawberry jam from the farmers market, and a smattering of pressed flowers.
ask-the-hidden-thief:
Alex actually opened the box, taking one pastry before closing it again, letting Caitlyn peruse the money in his wallet at her leisure. They were a fair distance from the shop, he was sure, and no one was going to come looking for them, in the unlikely event the shop owner had, in fact, called the police.
The girl seemed puzzled, he thought, as she pulled out one of the bills in his wallet, looking it over, running her hands over its surface, holding it against the sunlight.
“It is. There used to be coins, I believe, but they were too heavy to carry around, an’ too expensive to make in quantity, so at some point, they switched to paper,” Alex explained with a nod.
He stowed the wallet back in his pocket when she returned it, offering her a pastry in one of the frilly napkins they’d got from the shop with a smile. “No need for that, don’ worry,” he shrugged at her suggestion. “If we’d meant trouble, we’d have run off without payin’. I’m sure they understand.”They probably didn’t and the old gentleman was probably still fuming at the ‘youngsters’ trying to trick him, but he didn’t have the heart to tell her that.

"That's a relief to hear," she said, "Do you suppose a lot of people do the same mistake I did? That could be the reason why he was so cross for something so simple."
There was quiet as she pondered his earlier explanation. “It’s so different here,” she finally said softly. Caitlyn knew she would go back to Wonderland, eventually. It was her only home, and no matter how far or how long she had wandered she always managed to find her way back–or rather Wonderland would call her back.
But what should she do if this turned out to be a longer stay? There was so much still she did not understand.. and on top of that she had just found out that she had no appropriate money to live here. Where should she stay? Were the streets terribly cold at night? The girl spared a glance at the man sitting beside her. She couldn’t ask Alex to keep an eye on her always, surely he had his own life to tend to, she didn’t want to be a burden.
It was no little problem she was facing, but then Alex offered her the pastries, and she took one of them, a small croissant dipped in chocolate. It was still warm somewhat, and even in the first bite she could taste the rich almond filling, just the right amount of sweet. "This one's so good," she commented, smiling, all troubles forgotten for the moment.

Callidora nodded thoughtfully at the girl’s words. “I…I’m part fae,” she voiced the thoughts running in her head a few moments ago, “my people tend to live forever as it is. I’m not sure it’s something I’d…enjoy,” she admitted with a shrug.
She smiled faintly, if a bit ruefully, a moment later. “Exactly. That’s what I think as well,” she sighed. “On one hand, it’s fascinating, being out here,” she gestured broadly to everything around them, “seeing how it all changes, what great new things come to pass. On the other, you see it all crumble away, as well,” she winced.
"Oh?“ Caitlyn didn’t seem particularly surprised by the revelation, yet she took her time, pondering the words. "But see, the fae live forever. You might not. What do you suppose half a forever would be?” There wasn’t the slightest mock or cruelty in her tone, only genuine curiosity.
She rested her chin on her folded arms, tilting her head sideways slightly to watch Callidora. “How long have you lived, have you any idea?” she asked, matter-of-factly. “How much longer would you rather live, should you be given the chance to decide?”
ask-the-hidden-thief:
Alex shot the girl a reassuring grin once they were outside and in the busy street once more, taking a turn down a nearby street. There was a park on the other side, he recalled-there were many parks here, so even if he was wrong, they were bound to come upon one eventually.
“Sure,” he nodded to Caitlyn’s question, handing her his wallet. “Let’s find a place to sit down,” he suggested.
She took the wallet, holding it lightly in her hand until they happened upon stone benches under canopies of trees. The trees reminded her of home, somewhat, but it still didn’t feel quite right when paired with the glass buildings in the distance, so slim and tall they seemed like spears piercing the sky.
Caitlyn set the box of pastries aside, and focused on the wallet instead. Upon flipping it open, she noted the neat papers inside, numbers written on them. The girl took one slip, ran her fingers along its surface, and held it up against the sunlight. Only slightly seethrough, but there were no secret words to find in it. “This is your currency here,” she muttered finally, more a statement than a question. It made sense now--as much as things could do in her point of view, anyway. She returned the money and handed the wallet back to Alex. “Do you think.. do you think we should go back and apologize? It was only a misunderstanding.”
