toxxie: the concept
(pardon my shitty collaging skills)
Watching skins and currently just finished season 2 episode 1.
Thoughts?:
Maxxie is literally the only person in the main cast to treat Tony like a human. A real human being and not a pet or nuisance.
Sid is a cunt.
Sid needs to stay tf away from Michelle
I genuinely never thought I would feel this much empathy for TONY FUCKING STONEM
Maxxie and Tony are literally in love. Change my mind. (You can’t)
i’m so toxxiepilled it’s not even funny
(there’s like a total of 2 minutes of them interacting and somehow that’s more than enough)
My ships have to have a gallon of obsession and murder thrown in there or I’m not buying
like i won’t believe it’s important otherwise 😭
who up talenting they ripley
tashi duncan’s whole life revolves around the fact that she is both devoted and disciplined to tennis but she can no longer play tennis while art is disciplined but not devoted and patrick is devoted but not disciplined and both of those things are glaring weaknesses that disgust tashi but she has formatted her life in such a way that these are the two people who are really in it and she really can’t let go because she’s chasing the high of watching them play together that one time a decade ago where she realized that together they could almost be as devoted and disciplined to tennis as she is
I'm never getting over that interview with the writer of Like Minds where he says and I quote:
"I was aware that in gestalt relationships, there tends to be partnering, where it was a husband and wife team, or two gay men. So I was interested in that concept but I didn't want Alex to be gay, and I didn't want Nigel to be, overtly, or, gay–"
Like wtf is that
mr greg. was playing in our face because the movie ended up being extremely gay anyway, might as well have given us what we wanted
(a kiss between tom sturridge & eddie redymane)
It's worth noting that Greg does acknowledge that he let Eddie and Tom bring what they felt was right to their characterizations, and I think both of them looked at that script and decided: GAY TENSION. He as the director had to have seen and understood what was happening, especially as the film was edited together. I think he just didn't want to actually acknowledge it at the time.
But we're immortalizing these tags, because these are very good and important thoughts. I think it's indisputable that this movie done with overt, canon, direct gayness would be a very different thing and would risk losing some of the dark magic that draws us in. In particular, some of the vital queerness does lie IN the repressed and subtextual expression of it, as queerness so often must. It would lose some of its Gothic quality as well, bc so much of that deals with the Unspeakable things that make us monsters, both literal and metaphorical.
*bites the walls bc I'm at work and now i finally have some motivation to go work on the next part of my essay OUGHGGGHH*

like minds is my favourite movie and i can’t even express the absolute, consuming obsession i get whenever i rewatch
it kinda makes me avoid it
every post (in this very alive fandom btw) i see is a melody that forces me to dance the thin line between getting sucked in the soul ascending black hole of the film’s perfection and getting fucking fomo because not being possessed by the film basically makes you an outsider incapable of understanding its brilliance, making you blind to the details, useless as a dull knife… (in my humble experience)
ok rant over
question time!!!
which version of the story do you believe in / favour?
(we know alex is an unreliable narrator and as far as i’ve mapped out there’s around 4 different ways you could perceive the film)
i’m just not sure how much people agree on. personally, i think nigel wasn’t this mysterious evil force, that was alex’s projection and obsession turned into delusion. i won’t say much more because i’m due a rewatch (and don’t wanna spew bs) and i have a 10page document analysis that i’ll have to post bits and parts of someday
Personally, I tend to be open to many different interpretations simply because it keeps things interesting and doesn't limit my creativity, but for the things I tend to lean towards more often:
I'm very under the impression that Nigel clearly had an unchecked delusion festering for years. Both him and Alex seem to harbor delusions of grandeur, although in slightly different fonts, and after the trauma of Josh's death, and the isolation that followed afterwards, it left Alex in a vulnerable state where it can be argued that 1.) He was more susceptible to suggestion and 2.) Him and Nigel could end up falling into some sort of folie á deux situation.
Together, in isolation, they'd spiral deeper into their now-shared delusion, and since no one was willing to intervene, it would remain unchecked and get worse—leading to the heinous crimes that were committed.
After Nigel's death, Alex obviously wouldn't want to be held reliable for anything, so he tells his story; and this is where he becomes an unreliable narrator because we now know that he lied about what he did to Susan's body, and to some extent, how receptive he truly was to what Nigel believed, which therefore, puts everything else he said in his retelling up for question.
This is, at the very least, what I usually subscribe to, mainly from experience as someone who is unmedicated and prone to delusions and psychosis, and also has experienced what the beginning parts of someone's own delusions bleeding into their's feels like. It looks similar enough. (That being said, while I do believe Nigel to have some kind of psychotic disorder, the way this movie approaches mental illness isn't accurate and it seemingly uses symptoms loosely rather than any specific diagnosis for their characters... which can lead to some straw grasping at times, just to make things make better sense.)
But yeah!! :D I'd absolutely be down to read your analysis whenever you post it <3
first of all, you’re amazing.
second, i totally agree with embracing the ambiguity. i don’t like digging for the answer or “truth” because that sort of misses the point. i think it’s a film that really benefits from allowing multiple interpretations, it even gets reinforced by its own idea of gestalt, the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. the depth and complexity comes from the endless possibilities of the things that weren’t said or explained, from our own projections.
that’s also why i think that what we’re doing in the fandom is just observing how differently other personalities perceive the same film. i don’t think it’s even possible to agree, which makes the nature of the fandom very unique.
i suppose even liking this film to this degree is indicating an interest in psychology, but i’ve come to realise that we’ll probably get closer to figuring each other out than the film, because every interpretation is like a self report on the mechanics of our perception.

this is so funny to me but you know what hell yeah
there was a scene in skins s1 where tony and sid were arguing when looking for effy, sid got fed up with tony’s ways, called out how everyone had abandoned him for it and then tony just locks in like actual sociopathic control switch. maybe that was just the vibe for me that day, but i was genuinely intimidated which intrigued me further. i feel like he’s a character with too much potential for his genre, like i wanna see that shit in a psychological thriller.
