Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

Here is my review for the anime Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, or Koutetsujou no Kabaneri.

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, or Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is a new anime of this year that is a steampunk zombie anime, with edo-era style costumes. Oh, and did I mention it takes place on a train?

This anime is one of my favorite shows right now. Don’t get me wrong, there are some cliche anime moments and characters, but in my opinion the art-style, animation, and soundtrack make up for any faults it may have.

I love art and drawing, so I feel like I would be perfectly fine watching this anime with no audio at all; it is that beautiful.

In it, people will find some similarities to the very well known anime Attack on Titan, and for good reason. As it so happens, both are done by the same studio.

The anime starts off in a walled city. All is fine, but us viewers learn that the outside world is overrun with zombies called “Kabane”.  These Kabane are very fast, strong, and have a layer of iron protecting their hearts. Just like with zombies, they can infect people by biting them, but unlike with zombies, the only way to kill them is to pierce their hearts.

The main character, Ikoma, knows all this, and is working in secret to come up with a gun that is able to pierce the heart of a Kabane in one shot.

However, things quickly turn bad when the Kabane get in the city. In a last attempt to survive, all the citizens left alive hurry to get on the train.

Annnndd that’s all I will tell you for now. The rest is too spoiler filled.

Wayward - Review

Wayward is the perfect comic book for young adult readers who love both manga and american styled comic books. This unique book mixes both superhero story-lines, and Japanese folklore.

The story follows Rori Lane as she moves from Ireland to Japan to live with her mother. There, she accidentally steps into a huge adventure that does not start off happily. As things move on, she meets her new friends, and they hastily build a team to fight the evil forces.

Although the comic says its for mature audiences…I think that’s just for liability reasoning’s. In reality, I think it is the perfect young-adult comic book.

You can’t really read this expecting a serious read; because it wont be. This book follows kids in high-school who act and talk like their age, so you have to expect a teen book. They have issues with fitting in, and they dress how they want to.

I rated this  3  stars on Goodreads, because I liked it…but I am unsure how much. The artwork is amazing, and the characters are super unique, but I think the story was too rushed.

I think it would have been better if the comic introduced each friend very gradually so we as readers would have a chance to connect to them.

My hopes is that the next volumes slow things down a little bit, and give the story and characters a chance to show themselves more.

Wolverine: Old Man Logan - Review

Wolverine: Old Man Logan is a spin-off graphic novel which is based in the future. In this book, we see what the world might look like if the heroes lost and the evil villains ruled over the world.

It is dark, it is gory, and it completely changes characters you might know. Many of your favorite heroes will be dead, and those still alive might not be good any longer.

The story starts with Logan and his family living a quiet life on a farm. Logan is married now and has two kids, however, things are far from perfect; they need to pay their taxes, or the local gang ruling over their town will kill them. To keep that from happening, Logan goes on a job across the country with an old friend to deliver a package.

In order to get to their goal, they will have to traverse through enemy lands, and Logan is not what he used to be; he refuses to kill.

I can’t say anything else without spoiling, but I can tell you that in my opinion, although this comic has a heavy amount of violence, it is primarily about character development.  There is a major amount of gore, and the story is not exactly sunshine and rainbows, but I personally enjoyed it. It was a completely new take on Wolverine.

To those who do not know, there are also rumors that the next Wolverine movie might be based off this comic, so you might want to give it a read soon.

Artnia, Tokyo. Artnia is a Square Enix Cafe in Tokyo with a heavy theme of Final Fantasy. Their gift shop has items from majority of its games, such as Kingdom Hearts. I might have purchased a Heartless stuffies here...

Tokyo Disney Sea in Japan. This is one of two Disney parks in Japan(the other being Tokyo Disneyland), and I loved it. The scenery alone was worth seeing, but the rides were also fun too.

My friends took me to a sushi place today! This was Kappa Sushi in Hirosaki(Japan). You can choose from one of the plates on the belt, or you can order something else and it will come on a train.

Today I tried a Yakiniku place! There is a grill in the table, and you cook your meat on it with friends.

My newest nerdy buys. My friend took me to a second hand store, so I got all these for about 700 yen. Japan is awesome. The left is the first volume of Deathnote(in Japanese for studying), then I got a Saber mini figure, and a single by Kalafina.

P.S.A ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL COSPLAYERS  This is why we cannot have nice things. (i took this from a post on facebook i saw someone put up that had to be shared elsewhere) “1: Broken Light Fixtures on a couple different floors. 2: Busted Exit Sign cause some fuckwad thought it would be A Good Idea to high-five it. 3: Actual fucking flooding in a room. 4: Punching a hole in the bathroom door and writing “One-Punch Man was here.” 5: Writing “Katsucon 2016” all over the stalls on the main floors.”

Fun Fact: This shit kills small cons.

Our con got kicked out of it’s established space because the hotel kept getting trashed by drunk, rowdy con-goers. The last year they broke a fucking window, among other things.

Have fun at your cons. Have fun in your cosplay. But don’t be an asshole while you’re staying in a hotel. The shit is not cute, you ruin future cons for everyone. Part of the reason hotels spike their rates for smaller cons is because they expect con-goers to be disrespectful and destructive. Pricey rates drive people away from cons without a reputation. Those tiny cons don’t get a turnout because of hotel prices, they can’t collect revenue, they can’t afford the space, they wither up and die. No more tiny fun cons. Most of the staff volunteers and works hard to make your experience nice, and the hotels hold them responsible for the aftermath.

Just don’t be a dick, especially if you’re attending a small convention. It’s not hard.

FOR ANYONE WONDERING THE SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES OF THIS, IT KILLS BIG CONS TOO. Youmacon started putting up their rules for no obstructive masks or face paint due to people needing to be IDENTIFIED AS THEY DESTROYED THE CON CENTER AND SURROUNDING HOTELS. ALA (Anime Los Angeles, a well known, huge, secure con) got moved to Ontario, CA, after 2015’s convention because so many people destroyed the Marriott that they said “fuck it, fuck you, we aren’t hosting this anymore.” It doesn’t just kill small cons, it kills the biggest, most well known conventions in the country. This is why larger cons, the hotel blocks are hundreds of dollars, nobody gets a discount anymore, nobody gets the “free CONtinental breakfast” that was super common when I started cosplaying in 2010. Because we, as a collective, destroyed these hotels. I’ve paid my fair share of fees due to ruined hotel towels, but I’ve had friends charged with destroyed chairs, tables, etc. etc. that they DIDN’T RUIN because of the fact the hotels have to find SOMEWHERE to get the money to FIX WHAT PEOPLE DID RUIN. Take care of your hotel rooms. Leave tips for the cleaning staff. Bring a big garbage bag to throw your cup noodles in, and bring your own towels if you think your paint/makeup might destroy hotel ones. Don’t throw massive room parties, bring a small pack of wet wipes and wipe down your makeup station every day, don’t be a jerk!!!!!!! Keep Cons Clean and Safe and Secure by not being a massive fucker!!!!!
