Snopes says the cops in the photo here claim it was a hot day, and they were trying to prevent the cars overheating, but 1) Cops can lie and 2) Even if these cops DID have a good reason, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are others out there with less honest intentions.

Keep an eye out, and be safe.

Unless you live in the depths of literal hell your car isn’t gonna be phased by hot weather. If it’s overheating you have another issue.

Other fun fact: generally a bad idea to open your hood if your car is smoking unless you have an extinguisher or the fire dept on hand. On the off chance something is on fire - air+fire = more fire.
