soshiro hoshina does not play favorites.

when it comes to his subordinates, at least.

when it comes to the medical team assigned to the tachikawa base, however, that is when he plays favorites (though you would never see the vice captain of the third division actually admit that; he prefers calling it his “preferences”). whenever he finds himself in the base’s infirmary, he will always look for you. and when he’s lucky, which on most occasions he is, then he’ll have you treat his wounds. it’s just something that hoshina has grown accustomed to whenever he finds himself there. nothing more, nothing less (a lie).

you were a special case for the vice captain. there was just something about the way you handled his wounds compared to others. call it picky, but he just prefers the gentle treatment that you give his wounds. (how come hoshina constantly prefers to be treated by you when others would treat him the same? isn't that part of your job in the first place?)

(the answer is simple—it’s simply an act of soshiro hoshina asking for some quality time, even if he’s all bruised and bloody.)

“i’m almost convinced that you do this on purpose sometimes.”

soshiro simply grins at you. you weren’t entirely wrong—but it’s not like hoshina asks himself to get hurt when he goes out on missions in the first place. he could handle himself pretty well; he has the high position of being the vice captain of the third division, for christ’s sake. but perhaps it is inevitable that even the vice captain would come out of a mission unscathed.

“i like the concern from you.”

you give him a lighthearted eyeroll, to which he only grins even wider. "i'm sure you do," yet that grin slowly dissipated as he winced slightly at the feeling of the alcohol touching the wound near his eyebrow. “sorry, did that hurt too much?” you asked him, worried that it might’ve stung too much for his liking. this type of close proximity was normal for you and him. after all, it’s not like this is the first time your face was this close to his—though those are times when hoshina feels rather affectionate with you rather than in pain due to some wound he got.

“nothing i can’t handle, love.” he says, recovering quite fast from the alcohol sting. he was then met with a gentle tap on the lips—hoshina knows it was a warning from you. “watch your words, vice captain.” you say, applying a small gauze pad to his wound and securing it with paper tape.

“can’t really help it when you look so pretty up close, sweetheart.”

you ignored his remark but soshiro could see the smile that tugged on your lips at the petname. you then moved on to his next wound, which is on his left shoulder. his expression softens as he watches you inspect his wound, a small amount of guilt bubbling up inside of him. “this is gonna need a little stitch,” you sighed, grabbing another cotton ball, pouring the right amount of alcohol on it, and preparing to gently dab it on the wound. “and this might hurt a bit again.” you give him a heads up.

“like i said, it’s nothing that i can’t handle,” he reassured. whether it’s you he’s reassuring or himself to convince himself, neither of you really know. he hissed slightly when the cotton ball came into contact with his skin; it was barely even heard that he hissed in the first place. but you noticed it; you always do. you would notice everything about the man before you and he would do the same.

after cleaning his shoulder wound, you proceeded to prepare to stitch it up. there was no one else in the infirmary at the moment; it was now only you and hoshina there. he silently watched you as you quickly arranged the surgical suture. and even when you started the stitching, the deafening silence was still comfortable. 

soshiro gently raised his right arm since it was uninjured and used his hand to smoothly tuck your other strands of hair behind your ear. you looked at him, raising an eyebrow at his gesture. he smiles at you in return. “your hair might get in the way. we don’t want my stitches to have your hair stuck in them now, don't we?”

you quickly finish up the stitch and put gauze on top as well. “i’m sorry.” soshiro’s apology is as genuine as it always is whenever he gets treated in this same room. “i’m starting to feel quite better now, though. couldn’t do it without my favorite nurse.” he continues, as he grabs ahold of your unoccupied hand.

he hears you chuckle at his words as you interlock your fingers together. “avoid arduous training or activities for a good one week and you’ll be good as new.” you said, sighing as now you’re finally done with treating your boyfriend. “eh? no fair. i have to go help the rookies train the day after tomorrow.”

“i’m sure captain ashiro would let you off the hook in the meantime, soshiro.”

“oh, we’re on a first name basis now?” he asks, and this time it was his turn to raise an eyebrow. you bring your other hand up to his cheek, caressing it as your thumb grazes his cheek bone. he leans into your palm as if it were a reflex. “we’ve always been on a first name basis, dummy.” you say.

“maybe all of my pain could go away if you just gave me a little kiss, you know, as your vice captain.”

“now that’s just abuse of authority. do you ask other nurses for a kiss too?” you pouted.

“that’s why your my favorite nurse.” he replies, clearly emphasizing the word “favorite” as he steals a kiss from you.

yeah, vice captain soshiro hoshina definitely does not play favorites.

The hardest thing about being a high ranking officer in the Defense Force is trying to separate your personal life from your professional life. You’re a Platoon Leader in the Third Division but you’re also his wife, you both work together which gives him some peace of mind but you are always surrounded by other men. Men both younger and some more mature than him and it leaves him antsy when he sees his sweet cold demeanored wife cracking a small smile at someone who’s not him. It’s a secret that you two are married, you don’t even use his surname while at work so men mistake you as a single woman.

“Captain Ashiro is there any issue with Platoon Leader (L/n) updating her name to Platoon Leader Hoshina? I don’t appreciate the recruits and soldiers ogling my wife so openly.”, Soshiro growled, his lips twitching in annoyance as he watched a newbie blush at you as you offered him advice in the shooting range.

“If you’re fine with the added paperwork for her name change in the system I don’t see anything wrong with it. You do know that (Y/n) doesn’t allow those desperate men to catch her eye right?”, Mina smiled noticing her Vice Captain so upset, “Are you jealous that your wife is popular Hoshina?”

Without meaning to Soshiro opened his eyes and turned to glare at his Captain, he’d been caught red handed he just couldn’t believe he was so easy to read. “Jealousy is an ugly thing Captain Ashiro, I’m not a high schooler, I can handle my emotions like a proper adult.”, he huffed returning his gaze to the shooting range where you watched over your cadets.

“Whatever you say, don’t forget tonight we’re having a dinner with the whole division. (Y/n) missed out on the last one since she’d been temporarily transferred to First Division. Might be a proper time to show everyone that she’s already been claimed.”, Mina teased playfully noticing the growing smile on her Vice Captain’s face.

“That’s right…it’ll be the perfect opportunity to show off Mrs. Hoshina.”

The party went off with a blast just like last time, everyone was happily enjoying the booze and meal to their hearts content all while Soshiro found himself pouting among the other higher ups of the Third Division. He was ready to flaunt you off as his perfect wife but he’d forgotten that tonight was also your sister’s baby shower so you’d be missing the dinner party yet again.

“It’s a wonder why she married you, you big pouty baby.”, Okonogi whispered before downing her cup of beer.

“Did I ask for your input Konomi?”

The new recruits began talking amongst themselves about today’s training and naturally your name came up which quickly piqued Soshiro’s interest.

“Platoon Leader (Y/n) is just so lovely, that woman acts all cool and mysterious but she’s really a beauty when you break down her walls.”, one male officer sighed.

“Oh definitely I’d marry that woman in a heartbeat if I could, I wonder what her taste in men is?”

Kikoru huffed in annoyance and slammed her cup on the table, “A classy woman like Platoon Leader (Y/n) is way out of your leagues. She needs a strong reliable man who will always have her back, someone who makes her happy and helps her smile. She’s always got that dead expression on her face and it’s annoying that she never shows any emotion to us.”

“Hey maybe that’s going a bit to far, Ms. (Y/n) is very kind and I’m sure she’ll find someone when she’s ready. Being in the defense force isn’t exactly the easiest place to find a life partner.”, Ishikawa spoke up to try and lighten the mood but only seemed to push Hoshina more and more over the edge.

Konomi giggled watching Hoshina lose himself to his emotions, he really looked like he was ready to murder the next person that spoke. “Where’s our ice princess when you need her.”, Konomi teased clicking her glass with Captain Ashiro in amusement. There was a knock at the door of the room which silenced everyone before it slid open, “Good evening everyone sorry I’m late.”, (Y/n) smiled as she entered the room.

All the newbies were pleasantly shocked by this new side of you, you were actually smiling and your hair was let down letting it frame your face nicely instead of being in it being tied back like usual and you were in a dress! A simple yet elegant black dress with a fitted bodice and high collar with a skirt that stopped just below your knees and the most shocking piece of jewelry on your ring finger.

“M-Ms. (Y/n) welcome. Please feel free to sit next to me Ma’am.”, a desperate soldier offered you a spot next to him.

“No ma’am! Sit here, I’ll even cook for you!”

“No please sit here!”

“Gosh you look stunning out of uniform.”

“Marry me Ms. (Y/n).”

You waved off everyone’s advances with soft smile and walked to the edge of the table where the rest of the leadership sat. To everyone’s surprise you sat next to a pouting Vice Captain Hoshina who had yet to greet you.

“My sister sends her best regards, here I also brought you some dessert. It’s your favorite Hiro.”, you hummed softly placing a dessert box in Soshiro’s lap.

He instantly recognized the box without even opening it, his pout melted away into a toothy smile. “I’ll be sure to call and thank her. I was pretty sure you wouldn’t make it.”

You let out a nervous chuckle and nodded your head in agreement, “I almost didn’t, my mom wouldn’t stop asking me questions and then I got in trouble because of something so small.”, you sighed taking a piece of kalbi from his plate.

Everyone watched on his shock as you and Soshiro continued to act so abnormally domestic in front of them. Kafka was the one to stoke the flames of the situation when he noticed something written along your ankle.

“Ms. (Y/n), why do you have the Vice Captain’s name written along your ankle?”, Kafka pointed out loud gaining everyone’s attention.

All eyes were now on you and a playful smile drew across your face as you rubbed your ankle with the same hand your wedding ring was on, “I like getting a rise out of my husband.”

That one sentence left the whole room stunned into silence, Soshiro didn’t know anything about his name being written on you so he allowed his curiosity to get the best of him and moved so he could check you ankle. Sure enough the kanji of his name was tatted across your ankle like a possessive mark for all to see. His eyes opened at and shrunk into a dangerous glare, “Mrs. Hoshina when did you get this little tattoo?”, he growled playfully pulling you into his lap despite your attempt to eat. You avoided his eyes and simply smiled in the opposite direction while everyone else lost their minds over the new information. Soshiro began growling in your ear demanding an answer while his hands began to wander over your body playfully.

“Hands off Soshiro we’re in public.”, you warned trying to escape his grip. He only held you tighter whispering god knows what into your ears that left your flushed and red faced. Everyone was screaming and questioning you two for answers all while your perverted husband was trying to rile you up some more.

“Did you wear this high collared dress to hide what I did to you a few days ago? Are you shy about them?”, Soshiro teased leaning down to nip at your sensitive neck.

“I could say the same about your back, Mina says you always head off to the showers when there’s no one else in there. What ashamed of the marks that I leave on you Vice Captain Hoshina?”, you teased playing on his power imbalance kink.

“If you two are gonna smash can you take it home?”, Konomi giggled riling the crowd up even more.

You glared at your dear friend and ordered her to shut up, “Konomi please have mercy. Don’t give him ideas or I’ll be forced to call off tomorrow.”, you whined trying to struggle out of Soshiro’s grip.

He wasn’t letting you out of his grip now that he everyone knew you were his, his smile was never ending so you decided to just let him have this moment for a little while. Everyone was shocked to see this new side of you but in a way you both made sense for each other, he made you happy and kept you from working yourself to the bone and you accepted him for the way he was and loved him for it.

“I can’t wait to take you home tonight.”, Soshiro whispered into your ear for no one else to hear.

You fed him a piece of beef to try and silence him, he happily accepted it before you returned to your plate to eat. Tonight would be a long night but at least you didn’t have to hide who you were married to anymore.

Sometimes when he looks at you, something about you resembles a butterfly, so beautiful yet can't see its own beauty... Yet, he has to chase down the honju while you wait for help, despite you being afraid and begging him to be there... He was gone. You said, blood still dripping, Soshiro's hands reach out to help you yet you push him away. Of course, Soshiro loves you, but in his heart, he chose work over you, which means he had the accept the arranged marriage between clans. The days were you laughing at your friends for "I can fix him" come crashing down on you. Soshiro recall the days when you would get hurt in a mission and he would visit you in the hospital with your favorite foods and would lecture you about keeping yourself safe. "Y/n, I don't want you to get hurt, even if it's to protect me." He said, that day you jump into the kaiju's attack to shield him from it. He never told you but that day, your eyes looked really beautiful, they looked like they held stars in them. He found himself brushing your strands of hair out of the way for him to see your eyes more clearly. "It's fine, it's you that I would get hurt for! Every injury from protecting you is worth it!" You say that with a warm smile, it gave him butterflies yet he would push it down into the abyss of his heart because he was sure that this wouldn't work out, yet he can't tell you that. Eventually, his mind wanders to the memories of you breaking up with him on the day you quit being a soldier. He thinks your reason for quitting is something about your injury that requires you a long time to heal which affects your ability to fight. He didn't want to relive that memory again but he recalled that your hands were oddly cold that day, and your bandages were a bit off. He would fix it but you already leave. He was pulled back to the present when his wife, who is so different from you poked him. Soshiro treated her how he wasn't able to treat you, Soshiro made sure she wouldn't have to shoulder the doubts and the loneliness alone. Even if they're just friend now, he knows that she tried her best to keep things working out. "Soshiro, are you alright? Still thinking about that girl?"

She said, her fingers trailing down the lines in the book. She knows who you are, in fact, she met you, yet you were kind and understanding to her. She respected you, because even if fate is cruel to you, you still want to help her, Soshiro from this tragic event called "loveless marriage". She supports Soshiro in chasing you, yet she knows that Soshiro has insecurities that make him push away his feelings for you, and make him not understand his own feelings. And now you were a fluttering image haunting him, a beautiful illusion in his mind, and an unmovable calming ghost. In his dreams, you were always waiting for him, dancing so graciously while everything around you was dead calm. Your eyes held their sadness and blamed him, he doesn't mind, you should be blaming him. He always imagines you wearing a wedding dress that catches his eye one day, if he can, he would want to hold you your dream wedding. "...I'm sorry. I shouldn't." He said, looking at her, he felt guilty that he had to make her feel this way. Then he stood up after realizing what time is it. He recalls how you always told him about how you save money by buying stuff at certain hours for deals, he didn't understand much but seeing you talking about it made him happy. "Let me make up for you by buying the groceries alright?" She looks a bit disappointed and then smiles at him. She wanted him to go to you, to finally wife you up but the man seems to not understand all the hints she throwing these years. "I hope you will finally buy the courage to chase after the girl. The last time I saw her, she was still waiting for you." Soshiro just waved at that, pretending to not care yet deep down, those words surfaced feelings in him that he was not ready to face. Then he found himself wandering a little in the mall, wandering to shops that he thought you would like, Soshiro's eyes kept looking at clothes, and accessories that would fit you so well. And there you are, his bittersweet memories, you were here. But you don't acknowledge his presence, your beautiful eyes are looking around, those empty eyes. You look so lost, so out of place, just like in his dreams. "Y/n..." Soshiro's body betrayed him, and despite not wanting to talk to you, he still moved toward you. His heart beat fast and his hands yearn to hold you close. Yet you looked at him confused, you moved back a little, frowning at his calling. "I'm sorry... Do I know you?" You said, those words of yours froze him. Soshiro mind was racing, he thought you probably hated him and wanted to do nothing with him. The thought of you forgetting about him makes his heart clench. This is the moment he wishes it all was just a nightmare. "Don't you remember? I'm your vice-captain Hoshina!" He tried his best to do his signature grin, your eyes look into him and you clench a part of your jacket while frowning. Then you finally spoke. "Oh, I'm sorry, I just got into an accident and lost my memory, you were probably my friend. So... How are you doing?" You smile warmly at him but before he can reply, you are already dragged away by your friends because you wander off without telling them. He just stood there for a moment. While buying groceries and paying for them, his mind keeps replaying the conversation with you, he is deep in his thoughts thinking about a future with you, about how there might be a chance he can patch things up with you. "I hope you will finally buy the courage to chase after the girl. The last time I saw her, she was still waiting for you."

He recalls his wife saying that. When he goes home, Soshiro realizes today was a snowy day, on the way home, the memories of you playing in the snow happily without the care in the world replay in his mind. He found himself would die if he couldn't spend the rest of his life by your side.

Your fading images of playing with the snow had made him feel warm. He swore to himself that he would be chasing after that image even if this time, he was the moth flying into the flames. "Soshiro, I build a snowman that looks like you!"

zhongli saw how his eyes sparkled when he looked at you, when you smile too hard and your eyes crease and crinkle, when you laugh a little too hard at his bluntness and you lean against his chest for support.

it will only end in disaster, zhongli once warned. believe me, i am simply looking out for you.

but what did he know?

xiao wasn't a good person, he was quite aware of that. he was like the moon, he only brought light upon the darkness situations. but you, he thought, you were definitely the sun.

"yeah, that sounds about right," you hummed when he brought it up, earning a tilt of the head and squinted eyes from xiao. 

"what do you mean?" his eyes fluttered when you started to kiss the now visible part of his jaw, before he scrunched his eyebrows and forced them open.

"people can't stand to look at the sun. it's too bright, annoying. the moon is quiet and beautiful," you kissed him on the lips, once, twice, thrice. i love you. you pressed your lips against his gemstone before pulling back to look into his crystalline amber eyes. "do you know how many pray to the moon each and every night, thanking it for it's light and beauty?"

"the moon," he questioned, bringing a hand to not-so subtly cover up his fiery cheeks. "but why not a god?"

you chuckled and cupped his cheek, gently swiping across his freckle as if it were dirt that could be wiped away. "the gods are nothing compared to your beauty, my moon."

"if... if i am your moon, that would make you my sun, no?" xiao swallow a lump in his throat, his heart beating all too quick from him to focus on anything other than your eyes, or hands, or how close you were. unable to focus on anything other than you.

"indeed it does."

xiao kissed his teeth and tore his gaze from you, albeit reluctantly. the glaze lilies suddenly became of interest to him.

if you were his sun, that would mean you were just a measly little star, right? just a burning ball of gas. and he, apparently to you, was the moon. a natural satellite that shined a light upon billions, something people pray to. 

and you're just a star. 

you're so much more than that.

you're so compassionate towards him, not to mention how devoted you are. you're amorous in his eyes, dreamy and unreal. you were an angel, but you weren't. because angels and heaven and a holy cloud space was all fictionalised story to xiao. his life was this, an adeptus. his life was you.

he would say you're perfect, but you aren't. he has seen you lash out, and bark meaningless and empty insults at him only to apologize right after. he has seen you sob and sniffle and bleed. perfection is so quick to bore, he thinks. especially when your imperfections are more beautiful when you show them to him as a whole, when you trust him with all it. all of you.

"you're more than a star." xiao admits on a cloudy night, hands laced together while the scent of rain and qingxin flowers poisons his senses.

"hm?"

"a couple months ago," he coughed into his hand, golden band fading into a mere rusty yellow in the dark of the night. "you said i was your moon and you were my sun. but what is the sun but a star?"

you blinked at him, before creasing your eyes and giggling, your smile widening with every second he looked at you. "you're right. the sun is just a star." 

you sit up and dangle your legs off of qingyun peak, instantly alerting xiao to straighten up next to you. "stars are most beautiful when they explode. they reach the end of their lifetime and burst into this magnificent shockwave of light. it's breathtaking."

"a supernova." xiao recognises. you nod, squeezing his hand a little bit tighter.

"one day i'm gonna explode. and then, it's gonna be absolutely enthralling. fucking angelic, i tell you." you laugh, a sound xiao could and would die happily listening to. "i will be angelic when i die."

mortals die, xiao is more then aware than that. he has had dozens die in his hands, more often than he can count. he isn't always there on time. it's never your fault, you would tell him, and he would agree. he cannot be there for every beck and need liyue has. you taught him that he has concerns and needs, too.

this time, however, was definitely his fault.

just a moment too late, he was. time had slipped through fingers. you had slipped through his fingers.

he could've been quicker. he could've been there. he could've taken the hit. you couldn't. 

a low blow has been taken on you, a harbinger's blade had sliced straight through your stomach. and he was too late. he was to blame.

"no, no no no no no." this couldn't be. his spouse was not leaving him. you could get through this. he'll take you to that one pharmacist, what was his name again? baihua, baizhong? whatever the hell it was.

he was doing everything in his power to save you. he was ripping off articles of clothing from both himself and you, attempting to soak up the blood. your dainty hand grabbed his wrist, shaking. 

"it's okay," no it wasn't. "i'm okay with dying like this. with you." but he was not. he wanted you. he needed you.

he shook his head and drew blood from his lip until iron filled his mouth, choking on his sobs. you nodded in contrast, allowing tears to fall. "it is. because xiao, when you live for somebody, you are prepared to die."

your words were hushed, like a child's secret. like a teenagers first kiss with their highschool sweetheart, vowing to not tell a soul only to gush about it to your friends later.

he was afraid. he didn't want to lose you. he pulled you into a tighter embrace, hugging what was left of you and squeezing the remaining oxygen in your lungs.

"please. i can't. not without you. please, please, please." he sobbed. tears mixed in with the harsh rain that punched at his skull. he was the saddest little baby in all of liyue.

he kept kissing you, savouring your taste even if all he got was blood and salt. you kissed back, light and almost unconscious, like how used to kiss him during early mornings. he watched your eyelids grow heavy and he felt how your body went limp. he squeezed you harder and begged, pleaded, prayed. barbatos, rex lapis, raiden shogun, tsarsita, anybody. not my darling. not my love. not yet.

"i told you so." a disembodied voice spoke,  thick of pity, yet so low and flat. 

the glass broke. xiao sobbed, and screamed into your shoulder. he couldn't breathe. he didn't want to, if it meant he would have to live without you. 

you said it would be fucking angelic when you died. you lied to him, looking straight into his eyes and said it would be enthralling. yet, when he looks at you now, all he can see is the devil's work.

zhongli approached him and hugged him gently, a father's embrace. he was so cold compared to you. you were so warm and welcoming.

you were his sun, but now all you were is a supernova.

CYNO — GENERAL MAHAMATRA

when you defeat enemies and when you laugh at his jokes or follow his explanation of it intently. cyno thinks it’s so attractive of you taking on those criminals and making them confess, with only a swing of your weapon. and, when he goes on about his jokes and they make you laugh, genuinely laugh, the general’s gaze becomes wide eyed, his lips turning up into a subtle smile, in the same way yours curve up when he explains the meaning of the jokes you don’t quite understand.

your kindness, the light you radiate. in a world buried and surrounded in darkness and years of loss and anguish, you are his north star. aether doesn’t think he can put into words the warm sensation spreading through his chest when he comes back to you after any missions he has to attend. there is a nostalgic tenderness in the way your fingers comb through his locks of tainted gold and your arms wrap around his troubled frame, memories of long gone sunny days and the scent of fresh flowers surrounding the prince of the abyss.

when you help him relax after a long day of work. similar to albedo, tighnari spends long hours collecting ingredients and preparing medicine, as well as making sure the forest is safe. so, coming back home to you and cuddling in your arms, while you pet his tail and ears with care, always manages to put him at ease. like albedo, tighnari’s heart fills with warmth when he sees how much you care for collei and how much she adores and admires you.

SCARAMOUCHE — KUNIKUZUSHI, THE WANDERER

your loyalty, when you stick to him, no matter the adversities. scaramouche has lost so many people he cherished, so it won’t be easy for him to let himself feel again. but when despite his cold and biting tone, you persevere, you keep being kind to him, because you see through his facade, the cage around his heart starts to melt. slowly, one bar at a time, but surely, not even himself can’t deny his appreciation for you. caressing the heart of the balladeer is no easy feat, so hold it dear and treasure it, treasure him, because kunikuzushi loves you, and even if the veil of his emotions is not transparent, you grasp the message.

You didn’t realize it at all in the beginning since stumbling upon him in the first place was already not an everyday occurrence. Even so, every time you visit him, he’s somehow always there, with or without the prompting of a certain delicious tofu meal.

With Xiao it was always curt and brief, yet he never looked like he did not want to be there. You’d tell him about your day, he’d listen even if sometimes his gaze was elsewhere you could be sure he was paying attention in the way his lips twitched a little in certain parts of your tale, maybe suppressing a smile. This has been a routine for a year now. However short it may be, you had always cherished the time you have with him; in hope he too, feels the same.

            It was a serene evening when you came to the Wangshu Inn, ready with a plate of delicious almond tofu in hand. The balcony was always empty, as if everybody knew there’s a being who would not enjoy if people carelessly just loitering around there. It has been quite some time since you met with Xiao, still you never failed to deliver his favorite dish every day because even if you didn’t get a chance to meet him, you always come back to an empty plate the next day, meaning he always spare the time to eat what you’ve given him and it made your inside feels funny on its own weird way—butterflies, if you dare to be poetic about it. Like the romance novels you occasionally pick up to read.

            “Xiao?” You called out. It is certainly strange, to be calling someone so confidently even though you have no idea whether the said person is present or not. Yet you’re used to it by now. You waited another thirty seconds, where are all this faith is coming from? You wondered.

When did you start to be so sure that someone is on the end of the line you’re calling out?

“You’re here again.”

Right, that’s why.

Xiao said curtly, he wears an expression that couldn’t possibly be read by anyone but there’s something different about him today, sadness, if you’re allowed to take a wild guess. Your stomach turned around abruptly at the sight of him, you thought perhaps it was because it has been a few days since you last saw him but you’re feeling doubtful now. You hadn’t even realized you’ve been smiling so happily until you stopped doing it, wanting to greet the man in front of you.

“Xiao!” you exclaimed joyfully. Xiao just blinked, perhaps if he blinks fast enough, the literal sparkle on your face would find its way out. “Always so full of energy,” he said exasperatedly, yet you knew he didn’t find it troublesome judging by the little smile he thought was so skillfully hidden. You chuckled a little at the slip up, “Here! I made this for you,” you said, handing the food.

“Thank you, I’ll put it here for the moment, I am going to enjoy it later.” There’s something so cloudy about his gaze when he stared at the food, like something so precious you knew you would not be getting another in a long time. Come to think of it, he haven’t made any eye contact with you since he arrived, is something bothering him? Or maybe he just had a bad experience with the food recently, you decided to not get into it too much. He’s here now, and that’s the most important part.

However, you couldn’t have guessed the next thing that came out from his mouth.

“It’s best that you do not come here again from now on,” he said with so much conviction that you just almost agreed right away.

Xiao is a stubborn man, always cutting to the chase—so blunt, sometimes forgetting this little important thing called feelings. But when it involves you, you noticed he’s always careful, so keen on paying attention of the words he will say to you, but not today. Devastatingly, that was the most doubtless he’s ever been when speaking about something that regards you.

Your mouth feels bitter, you wanted to say something as simple as ‘why’, yet nothing is coming out, you’re finally experiencing what it feels like to have your tongue tied. It felt like whatever you reply, the next thing that will come out from his lips wouldn’t feel so great to listen to. Maybe if you just stay quiet, he’d retract the statement and pretend like nothing just happened. After all in desperate situations, humans tend to run a grand scenario on their head showing how it would be if things worked on their favors instead.

Seeing you stood there wordlessly, Xiao clenched his fist as if grasping back the assurance that was slipping from his hand bit by bit. The dreadful question he’s been anticipating finally comes.

Sadness is fragile, it can quickly turns into frustration, or this time for you, anger. Not the worked up kind, and not at him initially. You are so infuriated by the crushing hopelessness that’s coming at a mind-numbing speed, how did it all go wrong so fast? You needed to place blame.

“Why?” You said, still hanging on the thinnest tread of composure.

“This is my one and final selfish request. Will you please try to comply?” Xiao thought he could get away easy by just saying that, hoping you would just show your usual smile and agreed, but he knew he’s a coward for it. Even though it’s the only favor he remembered asking, he didn’t know how he come to a point where he could be this full of himself, thinking you will let him get away with such answer.

“I see, I was certainly mistaken thinking you and I are close, I apologize. However Adeptus Xiao-“ It was full of spite, there isn’t a single drip of genuineness when you spoke of his title. “I believe you at least owe me an explanation.” Xiao never recognized that tone—that textbook formal thing that you were perhaps taught to do. It cuts, somehow. You were always so.. gentle, even when he offered almost nothing to say when you told him stories about your life.

Come to think of it, when was the last time he felt his chest throbbed painfully like this? Seeing you so helpless, betrayed even. But this is something that must be done. He thought to himself.

“I cannot be saddled any further with this unnecessary feelings.” In the end, he couldn’t say it while looking at your face. A coward until the end—he thought, almost letting out a pity-laugh towards no one but himself.

Honestly, putting an end to this is more for him than for you. That’s why he said it was selfish, it was so incredibly selfish that he almost threw up the first time he thought about it. There’s no doubt that you would be safer by not associating with someone who’s literally called Conqueror of Demons, while that is true, the truth is this whole ruse was just Xiao’s attempt and try to protect himself.

Which is laughable, once he think about it out loud. A person who’s been so reckless on defeating monsters and threats across the nation, trying to shield himself from any possible harm? It’s absurd, to put it lightly.

But that’s different. Xiao is strong, unquestionably strong that he could bear hundreds more times physical sufferings than any other ordinary being. Yet the same cannot be said for a different kind of pain.

The pain of losing someone dear to you.

Saying he regret not realizing sooner would be like spitting to his own face. Each second of his time that was spent beside you, was the happiest he’s ever been and he wouldn’t trade even a fraction of it for the world. Rather regretting—it would be less of a bitter taste on his mouth to say that he was beyond glad that you crossed his path however short it may be for a yaksha that had lived through thousands of year.

His fellow yakshas, they were the most dear friends Xiao has ever had. When they were taken away from him, he was sure that a big part of him passed with them too. This hole on his chest was a reminder, then it became a warning he had ignored, when you started talking to him.

Although on his defense, he was sure you’d grow tired on visiting him since he came across a little cold; obviously you did not. You just kept coming, bringing him an unreal amount of comfort and ease that Xiao started to look forward to meeting you, which should be a sign in which he failed to acknowledge as well, or too wrapped up to even notice that he had began to depend on someone else once again.

“This is my last pathetic attempt to not dive myself any deeper and not returning to the surface. I hope someday you find it within yourself; a way to forgive me.” He closed his eyes, making peace with this decision, a final arrival to a destination that you couldn’t possibly have the words to convince him otherwise anymore.

You calmed down a little, witnessing his fight over himself in the silence. You did not completely understand, but getting angry just because you thought you had been betrayed.

What a simple line of thought.

You owe Xiao more than that, he’s not the kind of person who tossed away things just because he deemed in as unimportant. He must had his reasons. Which is why this hurts a billion times worse.

Never once you had seen him in such a sorry state that you almost feel guilty for wanting to cry. The thought of not seeing Xiao again who had been the highlight on your day for the past year just broke you. No more quiet conversations, jokes he always disapprove of, little things he did to show you that he cared, this will all be gone when you wake up tomorrow. You tears started to flow freely.

Xiao, who for the last time has proven yet again that he’s far superior in terms of strength, made an attempt to comfort you—and himself a little bit, by embracing you. It was warm, but you couldn’t enjoy that, knowing it will be for the last time. The only thing you could do was to cry, unable to let out words of comfort to the man who did not in the slightest, looked less hurt than you were.

After an hour that felt like years of crying, he lets go of the hug reluctantly. So doubtful that it mess with your head for a split second that there’s still a chance he’d change his mind. But it was only wishful thinking, of course.

“(y/n), I.. let you go.”

Xiao finally smiled, yet that is by far the saddest expression you had ever seen, plastered on his face. He stayed in character, even until the end, saying it as if you were in anyway forced or obliged to spend time with him solely for his sake even though it wasn’t true at all. With a voice barely a whisper you managed,

“Xiao, I let you go as well. Being with you has been the happiest I’ve been in my life, thank you.” You smiled, exactly the same way as he did.

It is very unfortunate in a world as reckless as this one where even though Xiao withold the power as a yaksha to literally change many line of events to his favor, in this case especially, his ability appears to be useless.

"Farewell."

You stood there for as long as you could, each time blinking slowly scared that he will be gone after you closed your eyes.

You blinked once.

He’s still there.

Twice.

Xiao is nowhere to be found.

All those days he wasn’t there when you came? It was never the case.

Xiao was always there even on the days you do not see him.

He tested firsthand, what it would be like to not be able to talk to you and only see you from afar. It was horrible, just seeing how your shoulder slumped slightly when you realized he was not there, seeing how you return to your home and how easily you are to be out of his reach.

That was one of the few times that Xiao had felt terribly scared, and he swore it to be the last time, that he’d grow an attachment to another being.

A Love Not Meant to Be Pt. 3: Kazuha

Notes: This is my favorite one by far :( which is bad because my favorites are usually the saddest ones :( + wrote this one in the waiting room for an X-Ray

The most tragic of poems around Teyvat were written and recited by none other than Kaedehara Kazuha. Small fame surrounded the wanderer when many began to recognize his beautiful words: haiku’s, poems, sonnets and songs. He was known to be a romantic- the world a spectacular place- always bearing the title of his inspiration. That was until people heard Kazuha’s poems once more and found that a heavy husk of grief and devastation riddled his once captivating art. Sure, they were still as beautiful as they come, but some of them were too depressing to bear. Not many know that both of those styles were dedicated to you.

Kazuha didn’t really expect to fall in love. He thought that he could never be happy again after what had transpired in his homeland. His sole reason to keep going were the wise words of his companion and the beauty of the world he has yet to see. That was until he met you. You were a long-time member of the Crux fleet, so you knew a lot about the world, had many stories to tell and was fascinating as to intrigue the silent wanderer. Kazuha finds himself approaching you first after you’ve told the crew about some expedition you went on when you were young. He listened to your stories- fantastical and mundane- until the last words when the crew dispersed in smiles and laughter. Kazuha wanted to hear more; of you and your stories. And so, he stayed and prompted you to tell him your tales. The crew was surprised about this. It was the first time in months that Kazuha ever approached someone, let alone talked to, since stepping into the Alcor. They watched in fascination as you and Kazuha hung around the edges of the deck talking about your adventures- from sunrise to sunset- and it seemed that Kazuha found himself a new companion.

Slowly, Kazuha opened up to you. His past: the falling out of the Kaedehara Clan, his life of wandering around Inazuma, his friend and how the Shogun had been unforgiving to both of them. He talked about how he landed as a member of the Crux, his eventual going back to Inazuma to help with the war and how the Vision of his companion reignited in his hands. You listened with wonder about the life of this peculiar individual. Kazuha fascinated you, more so with the way he spoke and the ways in which he was so passionate about everything. You’ve never seen anyone so carefree but tied down with someone so traumatic. Apart from you- there was Kazuha and it seemed that you two got along better than what the both of you had anticipated.

While you two had let each other in your lives- the good the bad and the things you swore you'd never talk about- there was one thing about you that you’d never let Kazuha know. You had an illness ever since you were a child that hindered some of your abilities due to fatigue and the overall strains it had on your day to day life. This illness came to clash with your adventurous nature and you found yourself risking everything in your power to fight it off- to gain a foothold against your own body and live the life you wanted. It took a huge toll on you of course and you’d find yourself becoming weaker and your days of adventure growing shorter until many, many doctors broke the terrible news that your lifespan was now cut short. You were devastated at this. It seemed that the strenuous activities only drove your illness to work faster, to spread quicker and to take you away sooner. That was when you were grounded back into reality and decided it best to follow the doctor’s orders and take your well deserved rest until your illness would eventually come to take you. It was how you ended up as a member of the Crux fleet; you begged Captain Beidou to be let in. You couldn’t let go of your old life and just settle down just as fast. You needed to be out in the world and despite Beidou’s hesitations, she agreed to fulfill your final wish.

You were adored by the Crux with your kind and carefree nature- just the type of person they needed on days when the seas get too gloomy. You brightened up the mood with your stories, your perseverance, and how you tried time and time again to fight against the inevitable- something that even Captain Beidou found admirable. They knew about your illness and tried their best to accommodate you even if you told the crew that you’ll be fine. Many of them knew you weren’t- catching you cough behind your hands and retreat early for the night to rest. They knew they were capable and even still they were worried. Even more so when they discovered that you and Kazuha became close companions. They knew so little of Kazuha’s past but enough to know that he had lost something, someone, so dear to him back at home. To lose you… the crew knew that it would be catastrophic, but they knew that you would never have the heart to tell him about it. And so, some went to tell Kazuha themselves.

In the meantime, while the crew were preparing themselves to tell Kazuha of your condition, he found himself falling for you. He tried so desperately to fight against it but it seemed that he had no choice in the matter; his heart was set on you and it would be stupid to try and fight it. He didn’t know why he ever resisted his feelings about you. You were wonderful. Maybe it was the fear of companionship after his grief, or maybe he felt like he couldn’t be committed ever again to feelings so strong. But then came you, and you proved him wrong in so many ways.

“How in the world can you fall in love with someone in one day?” You asked him once. He remembers the memory fondly; you staring out into the sea at the same edge where you two always met at, and your attention suddenly at him when he proposed the idea. Kazuha thinks about it now, the grief becoming clear in his foggy mind.

“It’s not impossible.” He answered. “Fate is quick to pull the strings sometimes.” You look at him and see his languid smile, hair swept away by the sea breeze and cheeks glowing pink with the bright sun. Your heart flutters at the sight. Even more so when Kazuha trailed his fingers on the back of your palm, prompting you to speak a confession you thought you’d never say.

“Have you fallen in love, Kazuha?” You ask him breathless, the wind taking your voice away but Kazuha heard you loud and clear. He smiles wide, heart beating with excitement in his chest.

“I actually have,” He starts. “With you, from the end of days, the start of nights and when the sun crosses the sky with the moon.” You laughed heartily at his sugary-sweet confession.

“A simple ‘I love you’ would’ve been fine.” You say as Kazuha takes your hand and brings it to his lips.

“For you, simple words will never be enough.”

That was when the crew decided it best to break the news of your condition to Kazuha. They sat him down and told him about your illness. That was it. They never disclosed how long you’ll live but hinted that it will be soon. They apologized and soon left Kazuha to process what they had told him. He felt it then; his world turning into shambles before his eyes. To have your life tangled in the delicate fingers of another, to trust them to hold it with care, only to have it unravel before you. The devastation that follows and the never leaving heartbreak it brings once that other person leaves; your life still a mess while theirs now cut short. They'll be gone, and you’re still here. You’ll live and laugh without them but it will never be the same because they were the reason you’ve lived, you’ve loved. It will never be the same again.

Kazuha has already imagined a life with you, how it would be like to have you by his side to accompany him with adventures and travels, to make new stories with you and to have your love be written across the stars. You were supposed to be with him till the end, till it was both of your times to go when you two are old and gray. Not like this. It should never have been like this. How could Kazuha not notice the signs? How could he miss the darkness under your eyes or when you’d sleep early and wake up late from fatigue? How could he not notice how frail you’d be on some days, how weak you felt on most and how ill you really were? All while putting on a display of strength for him. Kazuha was devastated.

“How could you not tell me?” Kazuha confronts you one day, eyes wide and begging. “How could you?” You don’t look at him this time and only wring your hands together. You look at the crew feeling betrayed but you understood why they did and were kind of thankful they broke the news and not you. You could never have the heart to tell him after knowing he had already lost so much.

“I didn’t want you to worry.” Was all you said, taking Kazuha’s shaking hands in yours.

“You should’ve told me.” He whispers, tears falling down his cheeks.

“You looked so happy.” You said, choking on your words. “I didn’t want to take that away from you.”

Kazuha didn’t know where to begin. He didn’t know how to confront this or you in a way that should be healthy. And so, he did what he knew best- isolate himself until everything made sense to him. He started to avoid you, your gaze during meals and your presence when you’re near him. He retreated back into the depression and loneliness he knew all too well, grieving for a loss not yet fulfilled. Kazuha already misses you even though you’re still here. That was when it clicked. He needed to be by your side until the end- and he was wasting time by doing this.

Kazuha breaks away from his isolation when he finds you at the same spot you two were always at- staring longingly at the sea. He approaches you and both of you stand there in silence, listening to the gentle waves, the idle chatter of the Crux and your silent voice swept away by the breeze.

“What would happen to you,” you ask him to break the silence. “When you lose yourself in me but I've already passed?” You don't look at each other but you know Kazuha was weeping.

“I’ll find a way back to you of course.” He says, his voice now more silent than ever. You prompt him to look at you and Kazuha swore he had never seen you as more wonderful than anything.

“You shouldn’t do that.” You say. “It isn’t your time.” Kazuha’s gaze at you falters as he remembers his friend who died too early- then it would be you. He would be alone once more and he doesn’t think that anyone else would be the same. Kazuha purses his lips and grips the edge of the ship. You hold his hand and he can do nothing but lean his head on your shoulder.

“It never has been.”

Slowly, you began to deteriorate. You were fine one day until the next, you were confined in your own cabin, waiting for the day you’ve prepared yourself for. Kazuha checked on you always; going back to your cabin every time he could, looking for remedies when the Alcor would dock on some new harbor, hoping to see you again. He never thinks he could be ready for that time when you’ll finally pass. You were ready for that moment, you had anticipated it all your life, but Kazuha wanted so selfishly for you to stay. Even for one more year, a few more years, he doesn’t want you to go.

How cruel could life be? Kazuha thinks. To take the half of my life, the half of my soul, my entire world.

Grief has already overcome Kazuha, as well as the Alcor, when you yourself said that it was time. Kazuha couldn’t accept it. The pain was too strong and he spiraled into denial until you could only beg for him to come and see you. Each time he did, something familiar but daunting bubbled in his chest. The feeling of rotting from the inside, deteriorating so slowly until the pain surfaces and he can’t help but cry out because it’s nothing that anyone can see- only he can feel it and it hurts. It hurts because Kazuha knows that there will be nobody else to share your pain when he’s gone. His body feels like it isn’t his anymore, mind lost the moment you’ll be gone, heart beating but numb and happiness seems so far from his reach.

“Kazuha…” You whisper, reaching out to him from beyond the dim light of a lantern. He walks towards you tentatively and sits by your side. “You’ve come.”

“Hello, my love.” Kazuha says, dipping down to kiss your forehead. You felt cold, Kazuha’s warmth being the only thing to comfort you. It was silent in that little cabin of yours. The white-noise the both of you found so discomfiting. How you wished you were out there on the deck, watching over the sunset with Kazuha at the edge of the ship- one last time.

“Please don’t cry, Kazuha.” You mumble, hands feebly reaching up to cup his face. Kazuha sinks into your palms and cries silently. How could he not cry? The love of his life is slipping away from him and soon he would be alone again- two people so important to him now lost to something he cannot stop.

“I love you, I love you.” Kazuha whispers, pressing his forehead on your own. You cry, for the first time since those doctor visits years ago, you cry at the impact of your illness. Only then did you realize how much you really wanted to stay, how much life meant to you. Kazuha was your life and you didn’t want to leave yet. It was unfair.

Your last words to him still ring in Kazuha’s ears. Though your voice was faint and weary, your words carried the weight of an endless sky- still clear and bright and beautiful.

“I love you, Kazuha. You’re my greatest adventure.” You said it with a smile as Kazuha gripped your limp hands, watching as the light in your eyes dimmed with the kiss of death. He presses his lips on your forehead, tears falling down his cheeks as he feels the last bit of life slip away from you, from his grasp.

“And you are the end of my world.” He mumbles.

The Crux was silent that night, so was the sea and breeze. The world stood on a standstill for you. Nobody dared make a sound as Kazuha exited your room, the bleary look on his face confirming the worst had happened. They watched as he walked slowly to the deck at the edge of the Alcore. There Kazuha stands, in the same spot when you had first talked, when he fell in love with you, where every memory he had of you was. He can picture you clear in his mind- standing over the edge of the ship, the wind brushing up against you both as you smile at the horizon. It was a place so simple but you loved it there- you fell in love with Kazuha there. Now, you are gone and once reality sets in, Kazuha cries. That was when his poems, his haikus, his verses, became grief-stricken to cope with the loss of his greatest love. Kazuha felt like no other person could match up to his friend from before, nor you. He felt like he could never once trust another person to be so close to him when they too would be taken away. And so, Kazuha retreated to his solemn solitude, forever lamenting the greatest losses that was his life, his love.

Part 1: Closure

Notes: This will be a continuation of ‘So Close, Yet So Far’ cause it’s been eating my mind ever since I wrote the first parts. I’ve also been listening to nothing but Like You Do by Joji to push me into writing this (recommend listening to it while reading) and idk why but I kinda cried on every part. It's also 1k words per part :,)

Diluc

To say that Diluc was a mess since you left was an understatement. He was an absolute wreck. At first, he couldn’t understand why his entire body agonized so greatly at the suddenness of your leaving. When his father died and his brother ‘betrayed’ him, Diluc only secluded himself and grieved- mostly feeling anger taking form into his now current self. But when you left, it was different. He mourned as if you died, wept bitter tears as he was once again placed in his darkest state of mind. Diluc experienced the emotions he had suppressed ever since that day; the two most important people in his life left him, now it was you, and the despair manifested itself once more to torment him. He hated himself for being so weak then; unable to save his father and unable to make up with Kaeya. Diluc has hated himself, even more so now since he couldn’t bring himself to show an ounce of appreciation for someone who did nothing but love him and understand what he’s going through. So, who else was to blame but him?

Sometimes, Diluc abandons his duties; paperwork piled up on his desk unfinished, Angel’s Share being managed by Charles for nights in a row, the threats against Mondstadt rising without the help of the Darknight Hero. What’s the use of all this? Diluc wonders. If you’re not here with me. Sometimes, Diluc cries; through the walls of Dawn Winery would the nosy young maids hear Master Diluc cry in his empty bed the same way he did those years ago, in the same manner you used to do when you’re alone. His already restless sleep is haunted by nightmares of you disappearing from his life. His hands would search for empty comfort in the side that used to be yours, grabbing at nothing but cold sheets in a desperate attempt to will you back beside him. Y/N, I’m sorry. Diluc would wail in his slumber. Please come back to me. Oftentimes, Diluc was silent. He would enter Dawn Winery after a night of work and stress, on times when he would go out, only to find his home empty- the absence of your cheerful greetings made the silence all the more mocking. Diluc would work in silence; drowning out all the noise to try and remember when was the last time he had asked about your day, trying to recall when was the last time you two slept on the same bed. Those were the times when Diluc had nothing to think about, his mind drained of things he used to be so caught up on. But sometimes in those silent hours would the memories of you come back- loud and devastating that Diluc had seriously considered drinking to be rid of the pain and heartache. He couldn’t bear to think of you during those moments- it seemed to only make things worse.

Some days it felt better for Diluc; he would go out to work and even be on patrol late at night to make up for those days he couldn’t. But the thought of you still ran rampant in his mind. He couldn’t withstand the memory of you leaving without notice and wanted nothing more than to apologize, make up for his wrongs and maybe be given a second chance. But he knew how this goes- life is cruel to him and wouldn’t favor him any retry’s. That would be in your hands alone and he has already messed it up so greatly. Today however felt like a good day for Diluc when he decided that he would be the one to shop for groceries. Putting his coat on, Diluc was ready to head off until a familiar sight came at him when he opened the front door. It was like a breath of fresh air and an angry storm all the same. It’s you, Y/N.

Standing at the door frame with all your belongings in hand, you two stared at each other, wide-eyed and unsure of what to say. Diluc felt as though his knees might buckle with how much he didn’t know he was shaking. His lips parted and pathetic sounds came out of his mouth in an attempt to make words. So many things he wanted to say: ‘Am I dreaming?’, ‘I missed you, Y/N.’, ‘You came back.’, ‘I love you.’, ‘Please don’t leave me again.’, ‘Please stay, Y/N.’, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’ Instead, Diluc straightened himself out and said;

“You’re here.” Almost breathless, croaking out those pathetic sounds, holding back the tears that threatened to humiliate him. You could only exhale and see how much damage you actually did. Diluc’s hair was disheveled in a poor attempt to tie it up in a ponytail, his eyes were bloodshot and dark from those nights he couldn’t sleep, his skin got paler from the many days he would spend locked up in his room alone.

“I’m here.” you repeated, gentle and apologetic. Sparing not even a second, Diluc lunged at you and enveloped you in a tight hug. His strong arms wrapped around your frame- left hand on your side while the right on the back of your head. You’re so close to him now, so real, he’s not dreaming. He didn’t want to let you go. Before you could think, Diluc was already sobbing out apologies, sputtering against your neck that you could feel his tears seep through your shirt.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” Diluc cried. “Please don’t leave me.” He was inhaling sharply, he felt as though he couldn’t breathe- his chest felt like it was on the verge of caving in with how much he was crying, and the ache it felt the moment he saw you and held you. You could do nothing but console him awkwardly with Mocco and Hillie watching in the corner with the most scandalized expressions on their faces. Looks like some new gossip would circle around the tavern later.

No words needed to be said during this moment as you two fell into a heap on the floor- Diluc still clinging onto you, his now breathy sobs trickling down your shoulder and you doing your best to comfort him. You had your fair share of words to say to him- you wanted to apologize for leaving so suddenly, how childish you had been for doing so, how you or other few people would be able to convince Diluc to have a sit down and work things out maturely. But you had time for that later- right now, Diluc is in your arms and you and his. You two had a lot to work on but at this moment, you just needed to be with him.

“We’ll be okay.” You whispered, and it was enough to soothe Diluc’s fears. Enough to have his tense shoulders relax as he drew out a long, shaken breath. You felt him smile against your skin now damp with his tears. For the first time, Diluc had been given a second chance. Maybe life wasn’t so unfair to him after all.

Kaeya

Kaeya has been drinking more than usual since he left you. He knows why he left so abruptly- he felt as though he was getting too close, and one thing he feared more than the inevitable were relationships that require you to become committed. The mistakes of the past may come seeping back in again when he had built such a familial bond with Crepus and Diluc only for it to be torn away from him so fast and so painfully. Now, he noticed how close he was getting with you and he decided to end it first before you could- before he could be trapped into another bond he can’t risk having.

Kaeya would watch you from afar sometimes; he watches as you divert your usual path to the market to avoid him, how you would close your bakery early to stop seeing him on his daily visits to the Tavern. It seemed to you, however, that bumping into Kaeya was unavoidable. When you’re struggling with carrying a bag of flour, Kaeya just happens to be standing there as he wordlessly helps you. When something you need from the market is sold out, Kaeya’s in the corner ordering his knights to bring in a new shipment. You’re not allowed to bar customers from buying at your bakery for no reason, and you thought that Kaeya would stop buying from you once you two broke up. But his orders kept coming and you had to see him constantly while delivering your loaves to the Knights of Favonius Headquarters, much to your annoyance. You wonder sometimes if he was doing this on purpose. You felt deja vu with this game of his so you avoided him to the best of your ability. Kaeya did do it on purpose. He wanted some semblance of closeness to you without actually being close to you. He knows he can’t keep chasing you this way.

But how could have ever been so stupid? You’ve been nothing but kind and patient with him- you put up with his alcoholism and soothe him through his hangovers then there he goes again to repeat the same habits and dismiss your worried scolding. You never questioned his methods of executing his work- those moments he would flirt with others under the guise of ‘getting information’ to see how you would react- and you would be there to smile at him and mouth ‘good job’. When you did question him about it, your fear being reasonable, he would turn the tables by saying you’re paranoid. You gave him genuine love out of the few people who had given him the same. He wanted to push you away so badly, and when you finally left, why did it torment him so much? You are always so kind to him, what scum was he to break your heart?

“Sorry, sorry…” Kaeya mumbled as he bumped into a few tables at Angel’s Share. He’s been drinking again, not a rare sight to see, but now he’s causing trouble by aimlessly walking around the Tavern and his tab is almost as long as a mile. Unbeknownst to him, Charles had called you to come pick him up as the other knights were already drunk, and his companion Rosaria was already asleep by the bar. Kaeya could only look up in his drunken stupor to see you, standing in front of him, arms open to greet him in. Maybe he’d forgotten that he had left you as Kaeya could only slur your name happily and fall into your arms under the impression that he was coming home to you like he used to. Until now, you’re still so kind to him.

“Y/N~” He mumbled, hiding at the crook of your neck, his breath reeking of alcohol. “I missed you, Y/N.” You couldn't help but flinch as you steady Kaeya to his feet.

“Let’s get you home big guy.” You say, straining to keep Kaeya walking on his feet as he thrashes around you. When you finally get back however, it was at your place, and Kaeya was more than elated to see it. He spreads himself out on your couch like he used to and watches as you leave to get him water from the kitchen. When you return, you’re shocked to see Kaeya crying into his hands. You approach him tentatively and set the water down.

“I’ve been so unkind to you, Y/N.” Kaeya says when he looks up to see you sitting next to him on the couch. You almost wanted to shove him out of your house as the next words that came out his mouth rushed at you like a pack of wolves. “I really did love you, Y/N. I still do.” You purse your lips as Kaeya forces you to listen to his drunken confession.

“I should have treated you better. You’re wonderful, did I tell you that?” You shake your head no and he laughs. “You are, you really are.” By now, Kaeya’s eyes are fluttering shut. Even in this condition, he’s still so beautiful.

“Nobody can love me like you can, Y/N.” he says, leaning his head on your shoulder. “Please forgive me.” Your hands smooth down Kaeya’s back but you don’t say anything. He keeps talking.

“I don’t know why I pushed you away, I was afraid of you… getting to know me I guess.”

“What’s there to be afraid of?” You say finally, your voice comforting Kaeya in a way he missed so dearly. “Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do in a relationship?” Kaeya chuckles and slides down, his head falling onto your lap as he looks up at you. Your eyes are glazed over and tears fall down your cheeks. You couldn’t lie to yourself anymore; you missed him, no matter how much he hurt you- you missed him. Kaeya reached up to wipe the tears off of your face, your skin warm to the touch under his cold fingers. You melted into his palms.

“Please, let’s start over, Y/N.” He whispers, promptly falling asleep. You sniffle and lean your head back against the couch.

“Sure, big guy, sure.” You say, but he doesn’t hear your answer. Kaeya’s already passed out on your couch, his head on your lap, a small smile creeping up his face. Maybe he’ll regret pouring his heart out to you when morning comes, denying it ever happened and mask it with his false bravado. But nothing mattered to him right now, he’s told his truth, and he’s close to you. Nothing can worry him when he’s in your company.

Zhongli

Eons have passed since Zhongli committed his greatest regret of slaying his beloved. Years after his triumph in the Archon War, his ascension to be the Geo Archon, the events of Khaenri’ah, and his current stepping down as an overseer for Liyue. All this time has passed since Zhongli has reigned timeless where all his companions have not; from erosion to war to mere degeneration. Worst of all was you who had died by his hands when you should be by his side until now. Though he was content with his new life posing as a mortal, Zhongli still yearns for the past when he spent the happy days without a care in the world. On times when he feels especially lonely does Zhongli’s longing for you only overwhelm him- and he allows himself to grieve you in a way he should have many years ago- feeling the true weight that came with the aftermath of your death. Thousands of years have passed and still, Zhongli can’t seem to forgive himself. How could he? You are gone, the one who has stayed by his side for eons, worst of all because of his petty fear and need to be triumphant.

Today, Zhongli was feeling especially nostalgic. He had diverted his usual schedule of walking around Liyue Harbor then ending the day at the tea house when he found himself leaving the city and into the outskirts of Liyue. As he walked, Zhongli reminisced about his past with you. Your memories now are so daunting and clear in his mind, hitting him so suddenly as if you had called up to see him personally. In everything he saw, he was reminded of you; how you’d always brighten up his mood with your beautiful smile the same way the wildflowers around him did, how you had Osmanthus Wine with him along with the Guili Assembly as Zhongli watched a group of finches fly by, how you had always stayed by his side no matter what good or bad he’s done as a pair of butterflies flittered past him. How fond were those memories then. If only you would be here to remember them with him now.

Zhongli stops in his walk to a path now faded from the land. He scans around the area and stumbles upon something that looks as though it’s out of place in this lonely area. Here beyond the great vastness of his land, the one that used to be yours, was a single flower not yet in bloom. Zhongli stared down at the specimen, he hadn't seen anything like it before. He knelt down to examine the bud further and only then did Zhongli hear a disembodied voice echo throughout the plains- so familiar, so soothing.

“I haven’t seen you in a while, Morax.” You said, your voice manifesting itself to surround Zhongli like an embrace. Even after all these years, he could see your smile. Even after what he did to you, you’re so kind to him still. Zhongli laughs and sits down on the grass, fingers digging into the earth beneath him.

“I go by Zhongli now, Y/N.” He says, looking up into the clear blue sky, trying to picture your face still clear in his mind. He smiles.

“Time has been unkind to you, my love.” You say. Until now, you still carry the love for him to call him yours. “How has your life been so far?” He recounts the years of the events that you’ve missed up until his descent from the sky. How much he’s agonized over these years without you by his side. How you had been his anchor throughout the rage that ran rampant during the Archon war. After that he grows silent when you don’t answer. Only a gentle breeze passed by and Zhongli could feel tears well up in his eyes.

“I miss you terribly, Y/N.” He whispers. Only then did you speak once more.

“I am always with you, Zhongli, in these lands, that single flower has roots embedded deep into the earth. And you, my dear, are the earth that supports us all.” You say. “After all, you have been the one to teach me that the land can carry memories for centuries.” Zhongli couldn’t help but laugh.

“Pray tell, when does your flower bloom my dear?” He asked.

“When time comes, my darling, it will.”

“Then I will wait for the day I hope to see it bloom.” For a while, you two talked and for a while, Zhongli felt the peace that he feared may never come to him again. Even if you weren’t there, Zhongli could feel your presence, your ability to give him the solace he had craved so desperately since the day you departed from this world. The thought suddenly appears in his mind and he abruptly stops. He needed to apologize to you, to ease the gnawing guilt that ate away at him for centuries.

“Y/N, words cannot express how much I regret what I did to you those centuries ago.” He says. Zhongli didn’t cry but a sharp pang of pain rose into his chest. “If I didn’t… you would still be here.”

“Oh, Zhongli,” You said. “I’ve already forgiven you.” With that, the flower by Zhongli’s feet bloomed into a wonderful specimen, followed by more that spread throughout the once empty grasslands of your domain. Their petals bursting with a variety of colors as their tips faded into a warm shade of yellow, a sweet fragrance wafted into the air and winds billowed to have them flow like waves along with the tall grass. The sunset shone onto the delicate petals as they glimmered like a million stars from where Zhongli sits, flying into the air to shower him in a dance of a million suns. “Should the day ever come, you will continue to shine like gold in my memories. I love you, Morax.” (Quote taken from Zhongli’s Voiceline)

Zhongli wasn’t the type to cry; today however, he felt more vulnerable. As your voice was carried away by the winds, Zhongli couldn't help but smile widely through his tears, watching the glimmering petals fall down onto him like blazing snowfall.

“You’re still as wonderful as I remember Y/N.” Now, you’ve overtaken every part of Zhongli’s being, his senses and existence. Like a hug that bid Welcome Back, have you finally returned home to him. He can’t wait for the day he can finally come back to you.

Xiao

Years had passed since the petty argument you two had, your ‘disappearance’ and Xiao’s laborious but fruitless attempts in trying to find you. When he finally did, it was more than obvious that you had already moved on. You’ve lived your mortal life and found a new person to be with, someone who has dedicated their life to you in a way Xiao couldn’t. You’d even started a family. You looked as though you were more than happy with the life you’re living without him. This would’ve made Xiao content to know that you’re safe, but why couldn’t he let you go? Why does he still watch over you in the hopes that you’d call his name? He gives a lot of reasons as to why he stays: monsters could attack unexpectedly; your child might trip and fall from a high place… you might need help to gather Qingxin flowers like you used to. Every excuse came to Xiao’s mind each time he watched you live your life from a distance. It felt more like a comfort to him, reasoning within himself on why he can never leave. What he doesn’t want to admit is that he still cares for you in a way that isn’t protective nor dutiful. Xiao has felt the emptiness of the abrupt stop of your relationship, and he feels responsible for being the one to drive you away. He wanted to apologize to you.

Xiao believed that he was giving himself an empty hope that he could be of service to you once more. Maybe he was only wasting his time doing this and that he should leave you alone for good. He wonders though, what would it be like if he met you once more. Would he be the one to approach you? Would you stumble upon him accidentally one day? Would you laugh? Would you cry? Would you be angry with him? Xiao didn't know, and still, he held on. Any interaction with you would suffice. One day, there was little to no wind, but a small breeze passed and grazed his ears. He stopped and looked around to clarify what he had heard. Xiao’s ears could never fool him- his senses were trained to be perfect.

Xiao.

You had called his name. In the blink of an eye, he was there in front of you, after all these years of watching from afar, years since that argument, years since you had last called his name, you were facing him and he with you. Xiao didn’t know what to say to you; so many words got caught in his throat at the suddenness of your call. He didn’t even know why he responded so quickly, maybe he’d been mistaken and was only giving himself false hope that you actually needed him. But you only smiled at him, a look he had almost forgotten.

“Hello again, Xiao.” You said. His name almost felt foreign on your tongue, but you were comforted to know that even after all these years he still cared for you.

“Y/N.” Xiao finally said, stiff and formal, that he wondered if this was the same familiarity he’d felt the moment he saw you this close. You’re older now; time undone on your features, but you still carried the same kind disposition you had those years you were his. You sat down and motioned him to sit with you. Obediently, he did. Xiao felt awkward in your presence- it was silent, and you didn’t say a word. He couldn’t. If he did, he might choke.

“We’re long overdue for an apology, don’t you think?” You said, your head turned towards the sky. Xiao held onto his pant legs tightly and some odd guttural sound came from his throat.

“I’m sorry, Y/N.” Xiao said stiffly, biting at his lip to force himself to say more.

“I shouldn’t have snapped at you that day.”

“Xiao…” you said with a sigh.

“I was being crass with you when you were only being kind to me.”

“Xiao.”

“Please accept my apology.”

“Xiao!” Xiao turned to look at you and your attention was at him.

“Doesn’t this feel familiar?” You said. “I meant I’m the one that should apologize to you. I shouldn’t have left that way.” Xiao scoffs.

“You had good reason to.” He says standing up. “I treated you poorly.” You shook your head and stood with him.

“We should’ve talked about it, I’m so sorry.” You said. “I felt as if I was only holding you down. That’s why I left, when I really shouldn’t.” Xiao stops for a moment and looks away to see your family from down below. Your lover playing in the fields with two of your children.

“Tell me, Y/N, are you happy with the life you have?” He asked. You looked down to where his gaze was set and nodded. Xiao crosses his arms and closes his eyes. “Then I forgive you. You’ve lived your mortal life and it eases my mind to know that you… and your family are safe.” Before he could leave, you took hold of his hand. Xiao almost wanted to pull away, but something familiar in his chest kept him from retracting. How he missed this.

“If you ever want some almond tofu,” you say. “I always have some available for you.” His gaze softened at how familiar this exchange had been. With that, Xiao nodded, and you were first to let go, watching as he dispersed into black smoke.

“And if you ever need me, call my name.” Since then, Xiao has become a common face to see for you and your family. He had been acquainted with your lover and you tell your children countless stories about the Guardian Yaksha as Xiao would leave before he could hear you embarrass him. It gave you a comfort to know that he did not hold any malice against you. And Xiao was rewarded once more by your time spent with him until the end of your mortal life. You had been blessed with longevity and Xiao was there by your side to see you off until the end. He had a peace of mind that even in your final days, you still seeked him to accompany you. Xiao can only hope now that in your next life, your soul may find a way to meet him once more.

Childe

Ever since your death, many noticed that Childe’s work had become “sloppy”. His assignments turned in late, the success of his completion dropped, and his overall capabilities seemed to stagnate. Everything came crashing down in his life the moment he found you lying dead on your bedroom floor. One would think that witnessing your death in the hands of those that worked for him would push him to fight better. However, Childe couldn’t think of anything else but revenge and nobody was merciful enough to give him the information that he needed. So, his anger was directed at something else: his fruitless attempts of tracking down your killers and his performance diminished to an extent that he needed rest. With that, Childe decided to take some time off from fighting and working. It was his absence that had taken away your life after all. Besides, working in his state of mind hindered his abilities to properly execute assignments and others that the Tsaritsa took notice of. She understood his plight and gave Childe time to grieve properly at his own pace. She couldn’t possibly have one of her best soldiers out there unable to fulfill her wishes. Then, he was set off in a time that would’ve been the perfect opportunity to spend with you. So many things you two could have done together. After that, hurtful words came at him once the other Fatui found out he was going to take a break to mourn you. ‘The 11th has gotten weak.’, ‘Such a pity that Tartaglia’s become soft.’, ‘Serves the lunatic right.’ Childe wanted nothing more than to slaughter them all, make them apologize, make them hurt and agonize the same way he is. But he could only hang his head low and think of you; his job of slaughter was the one that killed you when his enemies finally found his weakness despite his attempts to hide you away. They only showed you the same mercy he did. Looks like they were successful.

Childe had been the one to pay for all your funeral arrangements. It had a small gathering of your few close friends and family as well as his own. As much as he wanted it to be big, to match up to such a wonderful person such as you and let the world know of his dearly beloved, he couldn’t risk any more attention that could lead to trouble. Childe could only listen to silent apologies and condolences, feeling animosity with each one thrown at him as they felt almost insulting. Don’t say sorry to me, I did this. It was my fault. Childe could only watch in scorn as your friends wept over your casket in a way he couldn’t bring himself to. He feels undeserving to cry over you and yet, he feels as though everyone else’s grief towards you cannot compare to his own. Stop crying for them like that. You didn’t know them like I did. You didn’t love them like I do. Hollow conversations would fill the little room sometimes, others talking to him about how wonderful you were and healthy ways he should cope with loss. Only then would Childe excuse himself and hold in his anger until it would cease. I need you, Y/N. I don’t think I can do this without you. Sometimes however, Childe could feel sneers coming his way- talks about how he could have saved you, how it may have been his fault you died in such a tragic manner. He can’t think of anything else but you; he could’ve stayed, he could’ve stayed with you that night. How careless of him to leave you alone.

You were buried in your hometown; a peaceful cemetery in a quiet stretch of land where others would have picnics with their departed loved ones. Childe wonders sometimes that if this was his punishment for being selfish, to repent for the countless lives he took. That life had taken you away so unexpectedly to teach him the importance of time spent and to have him feel the karma of the agony he had wrought unto others. In these instances, Childe can’t feel anything. His body goes numb with his mind as he stands over your grave, watching it unmoving, expecting you to wrap your arms around him from behind and tell him it’s okay. But you’re gone; once the reality of the fact sets in, Childe would only turn and walk away to return the next day.

Childe would spend his days on your grave- telling you about his day, having picnics as the others did, sometimes weeping to the point he would crumple above the soil that kept you away from him. He’d spend hours upon end there, to make up for the lost time he can never spend with you. Every day without fail, Childe would apologize incessantly for being gone, his faults and his wrongs, especially his time away that night you’d been so brutally taken away from him. Childe thought he was being discreet every time he paid you a visit. Today however, he was followed. In the middle of him setting down a bouquet of flowers on your headstone, Childe heard heavy footsteps coming from behind him.

“Can you at least have the decency to let me be in this place?” He asked as some Fatui went and circled him. Childe knew better and decided to walk away from the cemetery to let the others follow him.

“You’ve become weak, Tartaglia.” One of them said, pointing his weapon at him. “It was because of that little love of yours, wasn’t it?” Childe balled his fists and stared at them threateningly.

“Don’t you dare speak of them that way.” He said lowly. The skirmisher couldn’t help but smile under his mask, not fearing the 11th Harbinger the way he used to.

“You should’ve heard them, boasting about how you’re going to save them. We shut them up real quick after that.” Childe snapped. In a fit of blind fury, he summoned his delusion and cut down the group before they were even aware of what’s happening to them. After the bloodshed, Child fell to his knees and screamed into the ground, angry tears falling from his face. He’s finally gotten revenge on those who had killed you, but why is the pain not leaving? Why does he feel as though his heart has been gouged out of him? Why is the pain so devastatingly worse than before?

Childe knows that he can never get closure after what happened, but he knows that he can recover. He can rest easy to know that he served your justice in his own volition. It may take years, but you’d want him to live, won’t you? He’ll live and fight in your name. At least he knows now, in some sick way, that even in your most terrifying moment, you still had faith to ask for him to save you.

Diluc

You always admired Diluc’s diligence to keep Dawn Winery up and running by day while protecting Mondstadt in secret by night. It was hard not to. You felt pride swell in your chest with every conversation held about your one and only.

‘Master Diluc is so hard-working, keeping Angel’s Share open all night!’

‘Did you hear? The Darknight Hero drove off those treasure hoarders from Windrise!”

It was a different type of pride when Diluc would be at your side walking through the streets of Mondstadt, hand in hand as many would talk about how lucky you were with him. What many didn’t know was the pain that came with such pride. Most nights you’d find yourself dining alone with Adelinde clearing Diluc’s unused plate off the table. Most nights you spent awake in your shared bed, alone with frantic thoughts worrying about his safety as he did his vigilant duty. Most nights you spent alone- wondering if this had all been worth it if the man you longed to be at your side was barely there at all.

On days it was worse. Diluc hunched over his desk skimming over piles of bills, shipments, and wages. Diluc complaining of particularly bad nights as the Darknight hero while you sit and listen as he never asks about your day. Diluc always saying “I’ll make it up to you” when he rushes out of bed for work and those slowly turned into “Not now, Y/N”. Diluc always spouting ‘I’ll make it up to you’s’ , so many empty promises that you now lost count of. Promises of dates in restaurants you spent alone and humiliated. Promises of nights of sweetness you spent by yourself cold. Promises of time together you spent crying as his vow to you kept breaking. You hoped that in every day he would say that, in the night he would make up for. But in the night too was he gone, and you’d wake up to Diluc’s spot on your bed replaced by some gifts and notes of an apology. At first it was endearing; until the next and next and next until every handwritten note felt as empty as you were. This time, you wanted to talk to him.

“Diluc?” You said, opening the door to a now empty Angel’s Share, your lover wiping off some glasses.

“Ah Y/N,” He says, surprised. “It’s late, you should be asleep by now, it’s dangerous out there.”

“I know, but I need to talk to you.” You said but your voice fell on deaf ears as you watched Diluc put the glasses away as he pulled his claymore from under the bar table.

“Can we talk about it when I get back? Now go home.” He pushed past you to the door, but you grabbed him by the shoulder.

“Look, I know how important this is to you and that you’re busy all the time, but can you at least take some time off for me?” You said, wringing your hands together as Diluc sighed and pushed past you.

“If you understood then you’d let me do this.” Diluc said, exiting the tavern. “Besides, if I do get some rest, I’d like some time for myself too as well Y/N.” His last statement made you stop on your tracks. It aches hearing him say that. All those times he spent away were away from you. And now he says he wants to spend more time away from you? Maybe you’ve fooled yourself into believing you can change that behavior of his. Maybe you’ve even fooled yourself that all those kind gifts and sweet words under that rigid exterior were all for show.

“Fine.” You said, watching him leave to do whatever he wanted.

That night, Diluc thought about his words- how hurtful it may have sounded. He wanted nothing more than to come home to you, your happy face and kind smile was enough to remedy the stresses life has been weighing on him. He was ready to talk that night, pour out his heart and soul to you as he should have been doing those many nights he wasn’t there. He bought you a bouquet of your favorite flowers this time, but he was more than ready to apologize in his own words. Tonight however, he was the one met with an empty bed, empty drawers and empty heart. You had left that night and didn’t even bother to leave a note. What use was it if Diluc wouldn’t be home to read it?

“No…” Diluc said breathlessly as he ran out to find Adelinde standing by the doorway. “Adelinde, where’s Y/N?” This was one of the rare moments he felt desperate, deep and aching it felt crushing. Adelinde only stared at him pained as his breathing became erratic.

“Adelinde? Adelinde please! Tell me where they are!” He yelled as his voice echoed through the empty halls. Diluc suddenly thought if this is what you felt those nights he left you alone. Curled up on your shared bed, heart breaking as another night you spent without him.

“Please, Adelinde, tell me where Y/N is. Please…” but she kept her mouth shut for your wishes. Diluc crumpled to the ground and sobbed into the floorboards, Adelinde gently comforting him as he did that day both his father and brother left. The most important people in his life left him, and now it was you, and it was his fault.

“I don’t want to be alone anymore…”

Kaeya

Kaeya was more than charming. Every girl in Mondstadt knew him, dropped to their knees at the sight of him, and even their grandmas loved him. He had a certain flair that you couldn’t put a finger on. He was mysterious, sure, and had his way with words, but there was something you couldn’t put a finger on when you first encountered him. He charmed you, yes, but you tried not to fall for his allure. Kaeya took note of that and began his little conquest to win you over. Or so you thought.

Every day as you walked the streets of Mondstadt you so happened to run into Kaeya with his ‘to-die-for’ smile and friendly attitude. ‘Good morning, Y/N!’ He would say and chat you up as you walked to work. You ran a quaint little bakery near Angel’s Share, and it just happened to be the perfect spot for Kaeya to be in by day so by night, he would drink to his heart’s content and meet with you to walk you home. Soon enough you found yourself making twice as many orders for buns, loaves and rolls than usual and when you asked one of your bakers about it, they’d say it’s an order from Captain Kaeya for the Knights of Favonius. It helped your business boom when people finally recognized your specialty bread recipes- All thanks to Captain Kaeya. Without fail, Kaeya would ‘run into’ you while walking to your bakery then walk you back home at night as he left Angel’s Share and he would occasionally order baskets of bread for the Knights to help with your bakery. You found yourself growing to like him and his company. Most days you wake up excited to meet him on the streets and tell him about your day at the bakery, encounters with customers and even the most mundane things in life that you had nobody to tell you about. Sure, you knew many people from running a business but even if you had little exciting things in your life, it was nice to talk to Kaeya because he listened.

One morning you found a small bouquet of Calla Lilies at your doorstep and a dozen pairs of jealous eyes from Mondstadtian girls. You knew immediately it was Kaeya. Something strange bubbled in your stomach when you picked up the flowers bound together by a blue ribbon- but the strangeness felt almost familiar when you realized it had been the same sensation all those times Kaeya listened to talk to you for hours on end. And the same feeling rose to your chest when you read the note attached to the bouquet: ‘Will you go out with me Y/N?’ Looking up from the note, did you see Kaeya looking hopeful, the charming smirk on his lips now replaced by a gentle smile that made it hard to say ‘no’ to. Despite your reservations about him, you fell for his charm in the end and accepted.

For a few months, everything was blissful, and you were more than content. You had someone to spend time with, someone you felt actually loved you and loved listening to you talk about your day-to-day life. Kaeya listened, responded, and asked questions. For a few months at least. Once you found him casually flirting with other girls and when you confronted him about it, he shrugged it off and said, ‘I’m just gathering information’. Some nights you were alone as he went out to ‘work’ late into the next morning. Most nights you had to drag him out of Angel’s Share as he thrashed in his drunken state. Worst of all, his questions about your life became more intrusive. ‘Tell me about that customer you had Y/N.’, ‘Where did you get that from, Y/N?’, ‘I need to know, Y/N.’, ‘Tell me now Y/N.’ You answered those forceful questions as shortly as you could and each time you did, you noticed Kaeya slowly drifted away. How can all those nice nights of care and loving slip away from you so fast? You wanted answers and decided to confront him when Kaeya invited you for dinner at Angel’s Share.

“I don’t understand why you’re being so paranoid.” Was what he answered you with. “I’m just asking about your day. After all, you never ask about mine.” You felt guilty about that and decided to ask.

“I’m sorry, tell me about your day then.” You said apologetically. Kaeya shrugged.

“It’s the usual, just doing my job.” He said, taking a sip of his wine. “Now tell me about yours.” You laughed at this, but he looked serious. You wondered if he was interviewing or something, but he maybe was just being Kaeya.

“Oh? Were you just using me to get intel from me or something?” You said jokingly. You wished you hadn’t asked. Kaeya didn’t hesitate, he didn’t spare a second to answer.

“Yes,” he said, so cold and so forward. He leaned back into his chair as he stared at your dumbfounded expression. “You gave such useless information or never answered any important questions at all and here I am being honest with you, Y/N. I’m tired and now that you’ve proven yourself useless to me, I think it’s finally time for me to go.” And with that, Kaeya stood and left you alone at your table- shocked, angry, hurt and confused. Now you knew what was missing from him. He knows how to get what he wanted, and what he wanted, he got. And that’s why he got you, for information and nothing more. You wanted to laugh at how stupid you’ve been for falling for him given that he barely let you in his life when you’re supposed to be in a relationship, but you were more impressed than anything. Impressed that he had kept up that front for so long that maybe those sweet-talks, and sugary compliments were all for his amusement, all for his job. Impressed that he used your own loneliness and willingness against you. Impressed that he managed to make you fall in love so slowly and hurt you just as fast. Some things in this world were just more important to him than you could ever be, and that was a world he can’t ever let anyone know.

Zhongli

(you’re a god in this one, will refer to him as Morax)

Many knew him as Rex Lapis, the God of Contracts, Warrior God, the Prime of Adepti. But you knew him as Morax, your lover. Thousands of years of your timeless life you spent by his side to watch him grow to become your acquaintance, your friend, then your lover. For a thousand years more you spent by his side to watch him fight, injure, and ache in the cusp of the Archon War. Many greatly respected Morax for his wisdom, integrity, and spirit- but many also feared him for his power, fearlessness, and his ability to crush anything he feels is in his way. But you admired him for who he is. After all, you spent centuries together.

When the Archon War began, you fought other gods with Morax and the both of you became one of the most feared and respected pair in Teyvat. Your people admired you, the other adepti respected you, best of all, Morax seemed to acknowledge your prowess as he would smile at you lovingly at his side. But as the war drew on, you noticed his smile began to dwindle, and your place at his side had moved to be behind him. His shadow. It was if you were only there to follow. Then, you began to see the true violence that came with war; how ruthless and unforgiving your lover could be. You realized that this is what you had been doing for countless years and the thought made you recoil to stay behind Morax. You began to fear his power but long for his once gentle embraces, his peaceful chats with you and Guizhong over tea. You missed the old days where you would be with him along with the Guili Assembly to protect Liyue. Now, it was all bloodshed and erosion when all you longed for was your lover’s touch and kind words.

It came to full fruition when you found out from word of mouth that Morax would fight a lesser god, one presiding over some small part of Liyue, to reclaim the land. A part of that land was yours and Morax knew it, yet he still chose to battle for it. You pleaded with him to let it go, to allow the inhabitants to live peacefully and to let the lesser god be. But Morax only pushed you aside and said that “changes were inevitable.” You even begged Guizhong and the rest of the assembly to bargain with him, but they could do nothing as Morax was blinded with fear after what had happened to Havria. So, you decided to change his mind yourself. When the day came, Morax was surprised to see you but happy that you'd arrived with the thought that you might help him. Instead, you instructed your people and the lesser god to leave.

“Morax, I can’t let you do this.” You said, brandishing your weapon as your people began to flee.

“Get out of my way Y/N, I don’t have time for you right now.” He said stepping forward, but you blocked him. Morax looked at you coldly and drew his weapon the same. You thought that maybe you could convince him or even change his mind. He spent countless years slaughtering other gods to your discomfort and decided to never say anything out of fear but now you needed to fight for yourself. You wanted the wars to end as much as he did and thought that stopping him was your only option for peace. That maybe this was a steppingstone for the calmer days you so wished to get back. You thought you could change his mind. After all, you spent centuries together. He would never hurt you. How wrong could you have been?

“Don’t make me do this Y/N.” Morax said as he took another step. You were afraid; more than you have ever been in your life, but for the sake of your land and people, you refused to step down. You knew full well that you were no match for him. You put up a good fight but, in the end, you were slain like the gods before you. Morax felt that you were a roadblock just as they were. It surprised you more than ever that he, the man you spent your entire life loving, would have the capability to kill you. Your feeling of betrayal masked the burning hatred you felt for Morax at that moment. Despite this, as your physical body began to reduce to nothing, you still had love for the god that had just taken your life. You watched as Morax turned from you and walked away. Just as he would those days you slain gods together.

“I’m sorry, Y/N,” he said solemnly. “I have to finish this.” He didn’t even look back as you were finally reduced into nothing. Even in your last moments, Morax couldn’t spare you the one thing you sought out for years- his comfort.

Xiao

“If you need me, call out my name.” Xiao said that time he accepted to become your lover. You knew of his work as the Vigilant Yaksha to repay his karmic debt, one thing that many know he can never overcome. But as his lover, you thought that you had some form of privilege when it came to needing him, and as he instructed, you followed. ‘Xiao’ you would say, and, in a blink of an eye, he was there, worried and ready to fight. But you were safe and only asked to spend time with him. His visitations were frequent only because you said his name and he was there. This particular night however was bad. You called his name because you wanted to give him a gift for your anniversary but once he arrived, you knew you were going to get an earful. You just didn’t know how bad it would be.

“What is it this time?” Xiao snapped at you. You were surprised as your hold on the wrapped-up box tightened. Xiao took notice and he grit his teeth. “I told you numerous times Y/N that I don’t deal with your silly mortal customs.”

“I know that Xiao but-“you tried to interject but he stopped you.

“I told you that you could call my name if you needed me but that doesn’t mean you can take advantage of that.”

“Xiao- “

“I don’t have time to do these pointless mortal things when I have more important duties, something worth my time.”

“Xiao!”

“I don’t think you understand how important this is Y/N, have you no respect for the Adepti?”

“XIAO!” He stopped his tirade to look at you. You were crying at this point, shaking as Xiao had backed you up into a wall. Each word he threw at you aches and stung, as if you had been repeatedly struck with his weapon. His words replayed in your head like a record, and you were too hurt and afraid to say anything. So, you fell to the ground and sobbed.

“I should never have involved myself in these childish mortal bonds.” After that, Xiao found his visits to your room in Wangshu Inn to be less frequent. After your argument with him, you never once called out to him, and he chalked it up to you cooling down. He was never the type to apologize first after all. But time passed and Xiao waited. He waited day and night for you to call his name in the middle of battle in hopes that he would maybe escape something and find solace in your embrace. But it never came. Days passed and his endless debt continued- your gentle voice never once reaching his ears. One night, he decided to go back to Wangshu Inn and ask Verr Goldet of your whereabouts, anxious and hoping, praying that you’re safe

“Y/N? They left the Inn weeks ago. They never mentioned where they were going, and I didn’t ask because I assumed they went somewhere with you.” Xiao’s expression dropped and in a cloud of black smoke, he was gone to search for you. His search became more fruitless by the day as he grew to be more desperate. He began asking around if anyone knew where you were, yet nothing came up and it seemed that you were too good at hiding. But Xiao never gave up, not until he would apologize for his actions.

Years passed and yet Xiao still searched for the one human that’s ever made him feel a sort of calm. But once he finally found you, he felt worse than ever. He remembers your face, you’re older now from time, but he could recognize your smile and laughter from miles away. Something you should be sharing with him, yet you were doing it with another. Your lover carried you in their arms and spun around as you laughed and looked happy. Xiao should be relieved that he had finally found you safe and best of all content. But why does he feel so gutted? Why is this feeling of anger and betrayal brewing in his stomach? Was it because you left without warning? That you’ve already moved on to another. How long has it been anyways? Long enough now that he sees you with a young child.

Xiao never got to apologize. He watched you from a distance live your life, grow old, and be happy with someone that isn’t him. He watched you day by day and protected you and your family by night as a way to compensate for the way he treated you so many years ago. He wondered why he couldn’t move on. Maybe it was the guilt that gnawed at his chest or that you seemed happier now than you’ve ever been with him. And that made his guilt hurt more. You only wanted his company, and now Xiao had to watch you spend time anew with your lover- something he had lost so many years ago.

Childe

You weren’t one to ask for much; you barely asked for anything at all. But contrary to Childe, he would give you the world if he could. He’s known to spoil those he loved with the endless amounts of mora he would get for being a Fatui Harbinger. Those nice shoes he caught you eyeing? Yours at the end of the day. The golden bracelet a salesperson made you try on? On your wrist walking out of the store. You didn’t have to say anything. If Childe could give you anything, he would. All except his time. You truly appreciated everything Childe has given you but what you truly longed for is for him to take some time off fighting and paperwork to be with you and maybe spend a nice day at the pier. Given his status as a Harbinger, he made sure to keep you hidden and unknown by his potential enemies and the isolation made you even more lonely.

“Please, Childe? Just one night.” You said, pleading with him to not leave. Childe sighed and put his coat on as his subordinates followed him out the door.

Coming home that night holding onto your favorite food from Wanmin Restaurant to make up for the days lost, Childe expected you to run up and greet him at the door. He finally relented and took a few days off to spend some time with you. He thought about what he would do with you; go for a walk to Liyue Harbor, fly kites around the fields and maybe even take you to see his family back in Snezhnaya. He smiled warmly at the thought but when he realized the door was unlocked, Childe’s heart dropped to the pit of his stomach. He swallowed dryly and pushed back the door only to be met with what looked like a crime scene. The living room was a mess: papers strewn about, furniture overturned, scratches on the wall, and the atmosphere was tense. It seems that his enemies finally found his weakness

“Y/N?” Childe called out as he slowly stepped into your home. No response. He walked slowly, eyes scanning over to the destruction until he stopped in his tracks when he smelled something familiar. Something he’s been accustomed to since he was young. “No…” dropping the food, Childe ran to your shared bedroom and kicked the door open. There you lay in a pool of your own blood, lifeless eyes staring back at him as color drained from your pallor face. Childe dropped to his knees, his eyes wide and breathing erratic. He had to have been dreaming.

“Y/N!” He yelled as he ran to you. “Who did this to you?” You didn’t answer. You showed signs of fighting back as Childe looked down at your battered form: scratches and bruises, frostbitten and burned skin all the same, and the large gash down your torso. Other fatui that may have come from other Harbingers. Those he annoyed before. But why would they go to this length of getting back at him? You were helpless and had no experience in fighting. You did no wrong. You were kind and gentle. You had no way of getting out of there alive. What if he stayed home that night? Would things have ended differently? Would you still be alive?

“No, no, no, this can’t be happening!” Childe cried as he pulled you close. “Y/N, I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I can fix this, I can still-“Your head and limbs lolled to the side as Childe smiled, crazed as he pushed your hair back.

“I have all the time in the world, Y/N. And I’ll give it to you,” he sobbed. “So please, say something. Anything.”

"I'm not asking for much, y'know." You seethed, biting the inside of your cheek in hopes of suppressing all of the vile things you wanted to spit in his eerily calm face. He looked at you as if you were a child throwing a tantrum, his arms crossed and eyes half-lidded, and that only made your blood boil further. "I just want some time with you!! That's it- archons, you're never here!"

Xiao scoffed, clicking his tongue. "I have duties to attend to, you know that, and you knew that when you agreed to a relationship with me." He seemed so calm about everything, it was almost sickening. As if this was just another conversation, and not something you've been agonizing over for weeks on end.

The hot, bubbling tears fogging your eyes slowly dripped down your cheeks as you bitterly smiled. "A few monsters are more important than your lover? Do I mean that little to you?!" You choked back a sob before angrily crying out- "What about your promise?! You promised to spend more time with me..." Xiao groaned, standing up straight now, and finally did a little bit of expression show through that stone face.

"Why do you keep bringing it up?!" He snarled, hands clenched at his sides. "I have to protect Liyue, whether you like it or no--"

"YOU KNOW WHAT?!" You interrupted, having had enough with the same excuse over and over again, and a very small part of you delighted in the shocked look on his face. "If this is how it's going to be..." He tensed, awaiting your next words with an almost fearful look in those amber eyes. Xiao's almost never been afraid; he's come to terms with the idea of death and he's confident in his abilities. Yet, when he watched you smile so sadly at him, with your cheeks stained from salty tears, his heart painfully pounded against his ribcage.
