Every Sunday morning, Bro. Marvin Lyles entertains and inspires Gary, Indiana, and a good chunk of Chicago’s South Side, with a combination of classic gospel music and local goings-on with his 'Gospel Sunrise' program. Tonight, celebrate Lyles' birthday with him for his annual birthday program, featuring artists like George Winton & The Chicago Travelers, Thomas Elmore, Arnice Johnson, David Gulley, Sharla Williams, and praise dancer Alexis Johnson
Photographer Hank Pearl captured Chicago "murder metal" legends MACABRE, Carcass, Exhumed, and Noisem at Mojoes last week. Check out the chaos for yourself!
A recent addition to the ever-growing Eyes & Ears jazz collective, James Davis’s Beveled features a mellow-toned front line of paired flugelhorns and bass clarinets unfurling impressionistic chamber jazz vignettes. The compositions slowly shift and allow for breakout solos, but maintain a steady contemplative tone. Tomorrow's show at Jerry's - Wicker Park will serve as an album release party of sorts, as the group's first release is due on November 25.
Jason Garden's Dance picks this week include two free events for your listening and dancing pleasure: TONIGHT at Rodan, celebrate the V.A. Launch party with Jeff Derringer, Lindsay Bailey, and Brian Denning (who you may recognize from his frequent pairing with Bailey at her baehouse events.) TOMORROW at Harbee Liquors & Tavern Est.1878, it's time for Secret Value, the reliable Friday-night party that features deep house from the capable hands of DJs Solson, Specter, and Damon Lamar
Retro-inspired power pop crew The Lemonss released its jangly, lightly-psychedelic, full-length debut, 'Hello, We’re The Lemons' on the BURGER RECORDS in September. Catch them tomorrow at Emporium Arcade Bar with Guantanamo Baywatch, Pookie & The Poodlez, and The Chips.
The Lyric Opera of Chicago opens its presentation of Porgy and Bess tonight at the Civic Opera House. The show runs through December 20.
Check out our Critics' Picks for the week- we've got a lot of exciting stuff coming up!
Anchored by residents Michael Serafini (co-owner of Gramaphone Records and Chicago legend in his own right) and Garrett David (house buyer of Gramaphone Records, ½ of The Bell Boys, and super hot name amongst those in the know), Queen! takes the classic Chicago House sound on a sleazy date in 2014. Head to Smart Bar Chicago tonight to check it out.
The Promontory announces a new Jazz/Hip Hop series, Uncommon Ground salutes to Jeff Buckley, free Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events hosts a FREE Cultural Grants Workshop at the Mayne Stage, and more.
Tonight trio of experimental acts perform at TRITRIANGLE.
Not everyone thinks they love new music, but who doesn’t love a party? Ensemble Dal Niente is throwing The Party, a three-and-a-half-hour concert of new music punctuated with appetizers and drinks, where audience members can mill around the gallery setting, sip and nibble, or sit and listen. Join The Party tomorrow night at Jackson Junge Gallery.
Check out David Whiteis' retrospective of Mavis Staples before her 75th Birthday Celebration (feat. Jeff Tweedy, mbrs of Arcade Fire, Otis Clay, Taj Mahal and more) on 11 / 19. True Chicago Icon!
Hip-hop legends Jungle Brothers hit The Shrine tomorrow night.
Tomorrow at Double Door the third-annual Bring It Up High Fest takes place, celebrating the life of the late Erik "Hi Fi" Kish with the music he loved. Catch The Paladins, Kevin Flynn & The Avondale Ramblers, The North Avenue Stompers, Barbara Clifford, and Kish's former band, Hi-Fi and the Roadburners.
