While watching the woodpeckers, I kept hearing this soft little whispering tweet. It would come closer then move a little farther away. I figured out it was this little chickadee trying to figure what I was. He did seem to be to afraid just kept trying check me out!? #chickadee #walk #woods #nature

My Little Chickadee. I was photographing icy scenes along a hiking path when suddenly a bird landed about a foot in front of me. It was a Chickadee, flitting from branch to branch, always within an arm’s length, apparently looking for a handout. I had no food to share but took advantage of the little bird’s quick poses. I actually had to back away a bit — it was too close for my telephoto!

Chickadees need to eat a lot of seeds in the winter! Calder (1974) notes that Black-capped Chickadees “… must eat continuously during short daylight hours to stoke their metabolic fires. If they do not, they will not reserve enough energy to see them through the long night.”
