This is pretty random, but I was wondering what a medieval city like White Harbor would actually smell like. I always imagined there being a strong salty sea scent as it’s right by the sea, but since it’s a northern city and pretty cold most of the time, I imagine it being quite scentless overall. I’m under the impression that White Harbor has more functioning waste disposal and sewer networks than King’s Landing, for example (but that city’s a mess anyway, so not a high bar to top exactly).
I’ve always kinda imagined White Harbor as a smaller, colder, and less relevant version of Oldtown lol. I believe the Manderlys would have brought their knowledge from the Reach with them after they were banished to the North, and taken inspiration from how things are run in the Reach. And Oldtown is famously clean and smells good, so.
Gasp! Torrhen Manderly! and he's just like, "yeah you got us. lolz" at being served rats. This house loves a meal with a message.
House Manderly supremacy.

I don’t know if this is a reach but isn’t it kind of disturbing for Corlys and Jace to gaslight Addam about his identity? Then they humiliate Rhaenyra too with their choice of lie. The reason Rhaenyra had to lie about her own sons’s father was because of the danger to their lives if it gets revealed they are actually Harwin’s sons. There is no reason for Corlys and Jace to lie about Addam and also Alyn’s true father. They do it why?
It’s not gaslighting tbh. The right term would probably be ‘manipulate’, but nevertheless, it’s intended to be a morally grey situation. As to why Corlys & Jace do it, I suppose it’s because they felt like it, they wanted to, nobody was going to stop them, they could get away with the lie, so they did it. Corlys wants his family inheritance to pass to someone of his bloodline and he’s aggrieved with Rhaenyra. Legally, Joffrey would be next in line (unlike his brothers, he’s not betrothed to a granddaughter of Corlys but a girl from house Manderly) and he comes before the Dragon Twins. By passing off Addam as a son of Laenor, Corlys can easily fit him in the Velaryon succession. Jace is obviously going to agree with this plan. He’s overtly focused on the war and is the type who will take any decision necessary to consolidate Team Black’s power. Let’s not forget, Jace was willing to sacrifice countless lives in order to secure his army of Dragonseeds. If helping Corlys with his deception (likely to soothe his grandfather’s feelings about the Velaryon inheritance) is the way forward, then Jace will play along.
It’s not a favourable situation for Rhaenyra. Although the book doesn’t mention her actually being humiliated about it, I don’t doubt that’s how she felt. Someone with Rhaenyra’s personality isn’t going to be pleased at these turn of events. The subtext around how Addam is treated just speaks for itself.
As for Addam himself, I think he’s too desperate for validation from his father’s side of the family to realize what’s really going on. It could also be that Addam tries to convince himself that Laenor really is his father, like he’s been told, because he wants to believe the lie he’s created his new life around. Since Addam is ambitious, he would also see his inheritance of the Driftwood Throne as the highest form of validation. His Velaryon grandfather (the Lord of Driftmark) and his Velaryon half-brother (the Prince of Dragonstone) are both pushing him towards a certain identity. Of course he will believe them. As much as Addam is being deceived, he’s also allowing himself to be deceived, if that makes sense? The way I see it, Addam just wouldn’t be quick to realize the manipulation, because he’s also getting the validation he wants out of it.
As unpleasant as it is, Corlys uses others as pawns, but he also does what he can to look after them. He wants to secure the family inheritance, especially because it’s wartime, and Addam is his means to do that. Meanwhile, Jace is learning what it means to be a politician in Westeros. He spends a lot of time around Corlys during this part of the story. He’s going to grow up to be just like grandpa.
Not long after Addam of Hull had proved himself by flying Seasmoke, Lord Corlys went so far as to petition Queen Rhaenyra to remove the taint of bastardy from him and his brother. When Prince Jacaerys added his voice to the request, the queen complied. Addam of Hull, dragonseed and bastard, became Addam Velaryon, heir to Driftmark.
