Advice To Newcomer Competition Dancers

Hi hello it’s me again offering advice and insight that no one asked for but will get anyway! I haven’t talked much about my personal life in terms of ballroom on this blog but I’ve decided to help out anyone who may have questions about competing, lessons, starting out or anything at all! I by no means think of myself as an expert or professional in anything related to DanceSport but I’ve been around for long enough to learn some tips and tricks along the way. 

Read on if you’d like some tips and advice on starting out in competitions!

Alright, so, you’ve decided to start competing in Ballroom/Latin events. Great! But what next?

Firstly, the number one thing I can recommend to anyone on competition day is to bring food and water with you. It might sound stupid but believe me, your body will thank you for it. Try to bring snack-like food like crackers, chopped up carrots and anything light that will not weigh you down. Water is a must. Drink water. Your body needs water. You will be exhausted by the end of an event and water is there to help. 

Secondly, I cannot stress enough that it is important to bring a back-up pair of shoes. Accidents happen, buckles break and shoes fall apart five minutes before you’re meant to go on. Even a cheap pair from lightinthebox/alliexpress is a lifesaver. Make sure that back-up pair is with you and ready to go at a moments notice. 

Thirdly, be there at least an two hours before you’re meant to be going on the floor. Competitions often run up to an hour ahead and if you arrive with ten minutes to go before you’re on - you’re going to panic. Arriving a few hours beforehand allows you to have a proper warm up, eat something, calm your nerves and work out any last minute choreography between you and your partner. You’ll feel much more at ease if you’re early. 

Lastly, don’t be discouraged by your results. What happens on the day is not in your control. Do the best that you possibly can the the results will come. I still have comps where I place second or third and it stings for a bit, but I focus on what I can do differently next time and what I can do to improve. Eventually you’ll be getting firsts under your belt like no one’s business. Your time will come.
