Jean Piaget
The psychologist Jean Piaget (1896-1980) of Switzerland is one the most seminal thinkers in the theory of childhood development. Piaget has postulated an Epigenetic Theory of Personality. Epi refers to emergence. The genetic refers to the core of natural material and socialization that comes to form the child. "So, in sum, genetic epistemology deals with both the formation and the meaning of knowledge. We can formulate our problem in the following terms: by what means does the human mind go from a state of less sufficient knowledge to a state of higher knowledge?“ (Piaget, 1968). Piaget’s Stage Theory of Development was one of modern psychologies first attempts to comprehend how children progress through cognitive development. His original model describes four universal stages for children. They are:
· The Sensormotor Period (birth to 2 years) · Preoperational Thought (2 to 6/7 years) · Concrete Operations (6/7 years to 11years) · Formal Operations (11/12 to adult)
Piaget believed that performance of children was homogenous regardless of culture. It is a widely held position that not all children reach the formal operational period. This may be due to the socialization or externalities operating on a child under different environmental and cultural conditions (Berk, L.E. 2000). There is continued discussion on the movement of children through the development stages. One of the most studied criticisms of Piagets work was by Lev Vygotsky of the socio-cultural school. Uriel Bronfennbrenner pertains to this perspective. Such postulates that in the positive correct nurturant external forces shape development more than innate a-priori factors. Regardless of revision, Piaget’s methodology and work on the child are held by some to be equal to what Freud’s work is to psychology in general.
The Sensormotor Period
At birth to two years all the intellectual and physical capabilities are underdeveloped. However the infant has sensory capabilities available. The infant learns by the exercise and utilization of reflexes in nexus with seeing, touching, sucking, feeling, and using their senses to learn things about themselves and the environment. Simple movements in response to stimuli later develop into more sophisticated coordinated acts of behavior(s). The infant through this limited expansion into its environment builds a set of concepts about reality and how it works. Object permanence or the knowledge that objects still exist after disappearing from sight has not been obtained by all children.
After a child has mastered the concept of object permanence, the emergence of directed groping begins to take place. The child begins to perform motor experiments in order to analyze the effects. A child will vary one’s movements to observe differentiation in results. The child learns to use new means to achieve an end. The child discovers objects can be pulled towards oneself with the aid of a stick or string, or tilt objects to obtain such through the bars of a playpen.
Through trial and error experimentation by handling objects, the concept that the external world is not part of the self or an extension manifests. Piaget calls this the sensormotor stage because the early manifestations of intelligence appear from sensory perceptions and motor activities (Anderson, M. 2003).
Preoperational Thought
At this stage, children acquire representational skills in the areas as mental imagery, language, and symbolic thought. They are very self-oriented, and have an egocentric view. Preoperational thought is pre-logical; the child has a subjective grasp of the world. Preoperational children use representational skills only to view the world from their own perspective. The main characteristics are:
· Egocentrism - child interprets the world in terms of the self · Centration - Fixation on one situation or object and ignore others · Reversibility -child cannot mentally remember steps of reasoning
Preoperational thought is also characterized by animism. The child has the tendency to ascribe human characteristics to inanimate objects and events. Artificialism is the tendency to assume that natural objects and natural phenomena were created by human beings for human purposes as darkness so that humans may sleep.
Piaget’s experiments in preoperational thought are groundbreaking and controversial. In the Three Mountain Task young children are asked to assume the perspective of a doll in relation to a model of mountains. Young children of the age four to five took their own perspectives. Children could not accomplish the task until about age nine.
Class inclusion experiments presented arrangements of six red flowers and two white flowers. When asked are there more red flowers than flowers, preoperational children chose there are greater red flowers. Conservation is also problematic. If two arrays of objects are presented and an experimenter alters the array and not the quantity of objects, preoperational children fail at deducting the transformation of the array.
Concrete Operations
Children in the concrete operations stage are able to take another’s point of view and take into account more than one perspective simultaneously. They can also represent transformations as well as static situations. Concrete problems are understood. Children cannot yet perform on abstract problems; they do not consider all of the logically possible outcomes. Reversing operations emerges.
One important task that children learn during the concrete operational stage is to arrange things in order according to one attribute, such as size or weight. Logical inferences such as this are not possible until the stage of concrete operations, during which children develop the ability to make two mental transformations that require reversible thinking. The first of these is inversion (+A is reversed by -A), and the second is reciprocity (A=A).
A final ability that children acquire during the concrete operational stage isclass inclusion; re-creating a relationship between a part and the whole. Concrete operational thought is decentered; a child can now focus on two classes simultaneously. While the differences between the preoperational and concrete operational stages are dramatic, concrete operational children still do not think like adults. They are very much rooted in the world as it is, and have difficulty with abstract thought.
Formal Operations
Children who attain the formal operation stage are capable of thinking logically and abstractly. They can also reason theoretically. Piaget stated that although the children would still have to revise their knowledge base, their way of thinking was actualized.
There is an introduction of formal thought and logical assumptions. Formal reasoning connects assumptions, propositions, hypotheses, i.e., relationships in which one does not necessarily believe, but which one admits in order to see where the consequences lead. Mathematical, scientific and logical reasoning have their basis here.
Problem-solving games, stories, movies, plays, and cartoons are important in formal operations play. Arts and crafts become more exact, realistic, and detailed. Peer approval is important. Teamwork, group cohesion, and skill in sports become important. Fluid knowledge is being developed as well as crystal knowledge.
It is not agreed that all children in all cultures develop formal operations. Children in agricultural and pre-agricultural settings do not have the same needs and appear to function well without obtaining this stage (Berk, 2000).
piaget's theory of cognitive development: breakdown
Prior to Jean Piaget’s research, people assumed that a child’s mind was simply a small-scale replica of an adult’s mind. Piaget’s research convinced him that children are not less intelligent than adults - they simply think differently. FOUR STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT: 1) Sensorimotor stage:
0-2 years old.
lacks object permeance (the understanding that objects/people continue to exist if they cannot be seen/heard/touched) ex: a ball rolls under a couch. it is out of the infant’s sight and thus out of the infant’s mind as well.
2) Pre-operational stage:
2-7 years old.
develops language skills, but cannot preform operations (logical mental activites) on concrete objects.
symbolic thought - using words/images/symbols to represent the world. ex: using a toy steering wheel to pretend to drive a car.
egocentrism - NOT being selfish/conceited, but being unable to consider another person’s point of view. They assume all others think and see as they do. ex: a girl wanting to buy her grandfather barbies for his birthday, because that is what she wants for her birthday.
animistic thinking - believing that inanimate objects (like the sun, clouds, or flowers) have feelings. ex: “the sun is happy today." ex: "the flowers are sad because they need water.”
irreversibility - inability to mentally reverse a sequence of events/logical operations. ex: two kids have cookies. one breaks their cookie into pieces and brags to the other that they have more to eat than the other. the child with the unbroken cookie can’t reverse the process and realise that a broken cookie is the same as a whole one if the pieces are put back together.
3) Concrete operational stage:
7-11 years old.
can perform operations on concrete objects and understand conservation, but cannot think hypothetically/abstractly.
conservation: the understanding that two quantities remain equal even though their form of appearance is rearranged. ex: when one child breaks their cookie into pieces, the other understands that it is the same as a whole cookie.
4) Formal operational stage:
ages 11+
can think abstractly and hypothetically
begins in adolescence and continues through adulthood - you’re in this stage right now!!!
I decided to write a Picture Book for my little sister for my final Project. This book will be about how a chore is more than a chore but a way to make for a better life. This book will be part of a larger series of books that focuses on several characters with different ethnic backgrounds all performing different chores. Each and all of these book will articulate the importance of both chores and healthy activity levels. I decided to use Jean Piaget’s theory of Cognitive development when writing this story.
I was beyond ecstatic to be reading a graphic novel in our children’s literature class. Growing up I loved reading comics in the paper so the day I discovered graphic novels at the public library was a day of excitement. I read the Nancy Drew graphic novels they had along with the series called “Baby Mouse”. The visual imagery seen in graphic novels is enticing especially for those who are visual learners. Talking about the design of a graphic novel reminded me of when we talked about the definition of a picture book at the beginning of the semester. I think that graphic novels could in some ways be classified as a picture book depending on the content. Most of the ones I’ve read use pictures to portray sound effects and what’s the upcoming plot of the story is. What do y’all think? Could graphic novels be considered picture books?
I definitely think that graphic novels could be considered picture books! A lot of what occurs in a graphic novel is shown through the drawings, such as the sound effects that you mentioned, or character’s emotions. I think that the heavy reliance on pictures to give descriptive details or entire story lines is the basis of what picture novels do, and I would one hundred percent agree that this is one of the primary focuses of graphic novels as well.
I totally agree with that! I was thinking that graphic novels could be considered picture books because of how much it affects the reader’s perception of the story, much like a literal children’s picture book. I think the main difference between the two might be the detail that’s included. For instance, compare the facial expressions in Secret Coders to the facial expressions in Little Red Riding Hood or Lon Po Po. I think it’s interesting to think about how you can clearly tell the characters emotions in Secret Coders by the depiction of their face and actions, unlike Little Red or Lon Po Po, where it leaves much more to be discussed.
Could this be because Little Red and Lon Po Po are meant for younger age groups?

“Secret Coders” by Gene Luen Yang & Mike Holmes (pg 16)
One thing that stood out to me in this book was the coloring. The comic style book features only shades of white, black, and green. Some parts of the pictures like the sidewalk and Eni are filled in with Ben-Day dots. The white background is shaded with little black dots that create a cool pop-art effect. This effect along with the green color reminded me of a computer processor. The green color mimics the color of the processor and it has these little dots that seem parallel to the Ben-Day dots used in the comic. I thought it was interesting that the writers did this because it seems as if they are implying that the kids in the story are acting as the processor.

I’m so proud to have worked on this with the amazing Gene Luen Yang, and I hope everyone who reads it enjoys it! It’s a really fun story.

This was a great idea to include at the beginning. It really helped while reading the story. I liked the inclusion of pictures along with each of the characters. I think it would help the child (and the parent/adult) visualize what this part actually is in real life. I also enjoyed the descriptions for each of the parts. Some of them are pretty clever and funny (Mass Storage’s pet peeve being Clouds is really amusing as well as Mouse’s being touchscreens). I feel that those little things make it enjoyable for the parent that decides to read this to their kid (especially if they are tech savvy). The layout is easy to read and not overwhelming. Diving each of the parts and coloring each of the boxes different colors further helps with sorting.
Exercise 1: Name: Mac-a-tac Serial Number: 10130518 Engineer: Alexis
I chose the name Mac-a-tac because I have a MacBook Pro and they are awesome at attacking viruses. They are known to not get them because they are incredibly hard to hack. I chose the serial number 1013 because I got my laptop October of 2013, my favorite number is 05, and I graduate this year, 2018 which is when I will probably retire my laptop.
This is Exercise 4 of the Hello Ruby build your computer. I thought this book was very interesting because Liukas took a complicated subject, computer programming, and tried to simplify it for a young audience. Not only did the artwork contribute to an innocent understanding of programming, but the exercises in the back allow young readers to participate in a complicated subject at their level!
I thought this quote from the closing statements of Petrocelli was very interesting because we’ve been reading the story from the narration of Steve. Earlier in the book he talked about his involvement with the “getover” so we know he was involved. As the story progressed, Steve goes up on the witness stand with ambiguous responses about his involvement in the crime. In some ways, I think Steve had to hold on to the idea of his innocence to avoid a sentence that wasn’t worth the actions he committed. Did he completely convinced himself that he wasn’t involve?
This quote represents how many of those who are convicted of crimes have rationalized their current situations, I feel that this animosity and miss placed blame is doing these individuals more harm than good.
I am curious if there is a way to help these individuals come to terms with what they have done, helping them learn from their mistakes rather than suppress them away and take the chance of them resurfacing.
I thought it was interesting how the book came full circle in the sense that Steve looked in the mirror in the beginning and didn’t recognize himself and then in the end he still doesn’t seem to fully understand who he is when he sees his reflection. The scene where Miss O’Brien ignored him after the verdict, I think spoke a lot to Steve. And I also wonder what did she see. I’m hoping that she didn’t see what the prosecutor saw in the beginning, a “monster”. But maybe it’s guilty? Confused? I’m glad he was acquitted and seeing him pursue his passion in film makes the optimist in me happy.
I wonder if she saw him guilty in the sense of the technicality of the statues but maybe not guilty of the crime itself? When considering NY law and the argument of the defense he was to some extent involved in this crime but if he fully understood the consequences of his actions and of the situation has been something that I have been wondering about this whole time. I am curious if he potentially feels the guilt of his involvement but doesnt feel complicit in the crime as the law says he was.
This idea of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or surrounding yourself with the wrong people is something that can truly affect your future. I think Steve is learning this lesson the hard way both through the trial and jailing process but also through the introspection that this experience forced him to have!
I will accept any amount of monsters my mind wants to give to me, but I will not become a monster myself.

This quote spoke to me and my prospective as a young adult. Many times I have fallen victim to the idea of lying to myself to create a reality that I want. This often times lead me to situations that were less than desirable but luckily never to the extent of being in jail.
For those who have found themselves in jail, and are having these thoughts, they are experiencing what I would consider a very humbling experience. This is the thought process that I feel would lead to a form of rehabilitation and in the case of this story the prevention of any deeds that could be interpreted in a manner that could lead him back to jail. One of the most important aspects of living a wholesome and fulfilled life is the ability to be truthful with yourself and then with others as well.
I can understand why they take your shoelaces and belt from you when you’re in jail.

This is a pretty clear benchmark of character development. Steve is now officially acquainted with life in jail. He understands the gravity of his potential lifetime sentence. He is no longer concerned with the interactions with other inmates, at least to the extent he was at the beginning of the novel. He is now concerned with the feeling of eternal confinement when there are so many experiences he may never get to enjoy.

This is such a deep and humbling quote. I cant imagine being in his shoes, being forced to recognize not only my dismay but that of all of those around me. That weight on my conscious would have a large toll on my mental stability and would change me as a person all the way to my core.
With that being said I am not sure that this is the change that we think of when we are considering rehabilitation of convicts. These feelings and dark spaces would lead me to a life of isolation and confusion, one that every move would be watching over my shoulder to ensure that I do not ever return to this place. Although this paranoia is accomplishing the goal of preventing future crimes it is opening a whole new door that can lead to severe mental health issues which often times lands one back in to the prison sector that caused this pain in the first place.
Setting The story takes place mainly in the Manhattan Detention Center and in a court.
This is the court room where Steve was tried for murder.
