An uncharacteristically somber Kishar and Merlyn arrive in the courtyard with Branch and Root. The toddlers rush over to them, wanting to be picked up and saying "Damamamamamama" and other half-babbling baby words. They were getting better at talking, in that it mostly sounded like they were trying to, but actual words in a language known by anyone but themselves were still beyond them.
It was raining still, but the awning was up and so none of them were getting too wet.

*Kishar sets Mer down, scooping the toddlers up immediately after. They know Mer will likely want to hold one of them, but Kishar can't just pick up one. What if the other feels like Kishar doesn't like them as much? No, they can simply pass one of the children to Mer instead.*
KISHAR: Hello, Little Ones, Hello Hello... You Seem Very Excited Today, Hm?
*They try and keep the exhaustion out of their voice. The little ones don't need to know.*
Root and Branch giggle, and reach out to grab at Kishar's hair. They also seem interested in the extra arms Kishar has at the moment, Branch especially...
Mer, meanwhile, smiles at them and waits for them to show an interest in her, ruffling their hair.
*Kishar smiles, and uses one of their extra arms to boop both children's noses, softly. They're adorable... Kish also looks over to Mer briefly, giving her a sort of "Aren't they so sweet?" look*
Branch crosses their eyes and concentrates, and then grows an extra set of arms themself. They Are emerging from their first set though. Root does the same but with feet.
Mer gives Kish a look indicating they agree with the sentiment, cooing over the twin's experiments with shapeshifting.
*Kishar does the same, cooing affectionately over the twins and pressing a kiss to the little ones' foreheads.*
KISHAR: Well Done, Sweethearts! You Are Doing So Well!
The children clap their hands, having by now learned what that phrase means even if they can't say it, smiling and wiggling. And starting to try and do things with their extra appendages, with mixed success.
Behind them, their tree shakes its branches.
Root does eventually decide they want to go over to Merlyn, so they can better poke at Branch's extra arms, and she takes it happily.
Smiling babies had a tendency of making everything seem better.
*Kishar chirps at the babies lovingly, nuzzling them as they do. The babies are happy, which makes Kishar happy. Things are better like this. Not good, but better. It's nice*
The babies chirp back, and giggle at Kishar nuzzling them.
Eventually, they do want to start running around again - especially Root, who goes out from under the awning and splashes in the rain and the puddles happily. But they come back periodically to show the adults things they've found, or just to snuggle for a few minutes.
It's nice.
"Yeah... It is good to be out here, even just watching them," Merlyn says, leaning in to Kishar.
KISHAR: Agreed...
*They curl into Mer's side, resting their head on her shoulder, affectionately. It helps, just... focusing on the little ones, pretending everything is normal. Things feel... better.*
Mer hums softly, the same lullaby she always sang to her kids. It does feel better now. Still not great, but better.
The children kept running around, and now they were adding shapeshifting in to their nearly indecipherable games. Which was probably god for their development.
Mer puts an arm around Kishar, trying to give them some of the same comfort they'd given her.
"Hey, whatever else happens, you know I love you, right?"
KISHAR: I Know. I Love You Too.
*They put an arm around her in return, pulling her a little closer. They watch the twins playing together, resting their head against Mer softly*
