Fire and Wind
Today I mastered not just fire, but also wind. I can now toss the bad guys into the air before I engulf them in flame!!! -Lucy
I Must Go Faster
“I finally mastered it. The shadow dance! To fade away, become one with the very air, only to reappear behind the enemy. I showed father the first chance I had. ‘Never have I seen someone so young master such speed…’ is what he said. I can go faster though!” - Kevin
The Gate Opens...
“The gate of stone creaked. Doors unopened for years forced ajar, shuddering piles of dust. Behind it, a god in need…” - Linda
The Slow Menace
“It was this black sludge... hints of purple. They managed to appear more menacing than they actually were, but I fear what a swarm of them could do to an unprepared traveler.” - John
Divine Assistance
“The land weighs on me… What I witnessed today… Unnatural. But thankfully Rea’s relics roused from their endless sleep, even if she herself remains quiet…” - John
The Sound...
“The Masher slammed into the man’s crumbling shield… The sound as it finally gave way was piercing. As if someone broke a glass, then used said glass to scratch down a chalkboard, but all in an instant. Hours later and I still shudder from the memory of it...” -Linda
Ancestral Shield
Forged by an ore forgotten in a forge long lost, no one knows the exact origins of the Bergson’s Ancestral Shield. It has been passed down through the generations to the eldest son of the family, who in turn took up the mantel of protector of not just the mountain, but his family.
The shield itself is unbreakable. Both blacksmiths and historians have theorized the shield’s strength is the results of some rare strain of steel that could only be melted in the Lands of Fire. This forge, real or not, was titled the God’s Forge and many a travelers have nearly lost their lives in pursuit of this legendary forge.
John Bergson is the current wielder of the Ancestral Shield. His use of the shield can attest for its strength as he uses it relentlessly. It constantly takes punishment from Corrupted and when John is fed up with it, he dishes the punishment right back, crushing his enemies with the shield. He once stood between a house and a tumbling boulder the size of said house. Holding his shield up, the boulder violently crashed against him. The boulder pushed John back, sparks flying from the clashing of rock and metal. Digging his heels in, he managed to slow the boulder down, ultimately stopping it mere feet from it’s targeted house.
Some say the shield gets its strength from a rare metal. John will tell you differently though. His shield’s strength comes from the love of countless Bergsons before him.
Dev. Blog - Combat Stances
In the December Kickstarter update, we showed a few animations of both Kevin and Linda performing some pretty new moves (And a sweet gif of some Dark Claws in cute little Santa hats. You should def check that out). What you witnessed there were the results of Combat Stances! We have been focusing on the hack n’ slash aspect of combat for the past couple months. We wanted to give players more choice, but not to over complicate things by adding additional buttons. Combat Stances were our eloquent solution to increasing combat depth, but not difficulty.
Two Stances
Each character has two Combat Stances. They have their Primary Stance in which the two attack buttons perform basic attacks and then their Secondary Stance which is triggered by a button press. While in Secondary Stance, the player can experience additional passive abilities as well as two new attacks that replace the standard abilities.
More Personality
Each Secondary Stance is the embodiment of the character’s personality and an amplification of their fighting style. Take Kevin - He is a highly dexterous character, always moving and attacking from all angles. Some enemies may just assume he is invisible as he is hard to keep in eye sight.
In his Primary Stance, he has his basic Knife Attack which assaults the enemy in a frenzy, and the Fan of Knives which launches throwing knives in all directions. Both attacks support a quick and adaptive play style, but his Secondary Stance takes it to a whole new level.
First, when activated, Kevin becomes invisible and gains a momentary speed buff. In this form he can move about the battlefield with relative ease as he formulates his next barrage of punishment on completely unsuspecting enemies. His two new attacks in this form are Execute and Shadow Dance. Execute is a devastating singular attack from the darkness while Shadow Dance allows Kevin to rapidly teleport between enemies dishing out the pain between them all.
Kevin is a fast and stealthy character. His Secondary Stance just cranks it to 11! (Necessary Spinal Tap reference for the year completed!)
Simplicity over Difficulty
It was vital that combat didn't become more difficult from additional buttons. By adding additional buttons, players have to memorize more. Kevin is a great example. He would need an additional three buttons to include his Execute, Shadow Dance and Invisibility. Each requiring a separate cooldown. This didn’t sit well with the fast paced action. It just bogged down the experience and fun factor. By grouping the attacks into stances, we could combine cool downs and allow the player to focus on what they do best - mercilessly killing the Corrupted!!

Bestiary - Draken
Many would categorize the bulbous Draken as a simple plant, similar in nature to the Fly Trap. When the bud protruding from the ground is simply tapped, it engorges on an explosive fluid trapped below until… well it explodes. It’s quite a sight to behold.
You may be asking yourself “Meran, you are all about the beasts. Why are you covering a plant?!?”. Well. These are the questions that keep most up at night. Let me explain. I have a theory that a small creature resides in the ground under the bulb of the Draken, and it is they who create the explosion when they feel threatened.
I once witnessed a small red creature, resembling a lizard, crawl into the ground near a camp I was in. Several days later the Draken bulb appeared. I have yet to witness another red lizard and attempts at approaching the Draken have proved futile. One attempt resulted in the loss of my favorite cloak to the fire…
For any travelers - please stay vigilant. The Draken can cause serious burns. Luckily, the Draken is not picky. If triggered near a group of enemies, a warrior could easily destroy them all in one fell swipe.

Lore 113 - Grahm’s Secret
I have a new fable from the pub as of last night. This rather joyous patron insisted on telling me a story told to him as a child. As a connoisseur of legends, whether myth or fact, I was of course obliged to listen to the man. Transcribed below is our conversation.
The man held his flagon up to his mouth. “A fantastic bit of narrative here.” he said with now wet lips. Excited, he brought his cup down to the table with a thud. His eyes widened in sudden regret as most patrons quickly and haphazardly turned our way. One man actually fell out of his chair during the procession.
“My apologies men. That was… much louder than I meant it to be. Please. Continue with your various, lush activities.” Everyone slowly turned back around. The man that fell picked up his chair swearing he had lost a fortnight off his life.
Composed again, the man began his story. “There once lived a traveling doctor by the name of Dr. Frinickle Grahm. Interesting name right?. He would go town to town, in this rickety arse wagon, selling vigor enhancing elixirs. Guaranteeing that with this elixir, you could overpower any living creature, beast or man. He would set up shop in the town center and demonstrate feats of strength as proof of his elixir's workings. For his final demonstration, he would pick the largest man in the village and challenge them to an arm wrestling match. Now, this doctor was by no means the epitome of man. He was a scrawny little fella. Still. He would run in place, roll up his sleeve, and completely demolished men twice his size!”
“So… the elixir actually gave one enhanced strength?”
“Ha. Nope. Not at all. Well… Ok. It kinda did.”
“Explain?”
“Ok. This is rich. His elixir's prime ingredient was that of the orich plant up from the forest. It’s a foul stench. He would mask it with various herbs for the elixir, but once down the hatch, one’s very perspiration would reek. The simple act of sweating created a stench so foul that none could hold out long when near it.”
“So the running in place?”
“Yep. He simply built up a bit of sweat. His opponent would always start to wretch from the start of the arm wrestling contest. Caught off guard, they always lost.”
“That is… quite a story. How did the good doctor not lose his lunch from the smell?”
“Eh, your own brand never affects you the same as others I suppose? All I know is this, he would sell crates of the stuff and leave town as quickly as he arrived.”
The man barked with laughter then returned to his drink. I simply was left wondering if any of Grahm’s elixirs were left on the mountain.

Bestiary - Bat (Winged Rat)
Bats… They were pest before the Corruption and are still pests now, albeit, slightly more aggressive. I had the actual pleasure of confronting one. -_-
I was observing a Goblin Archer when one sneaked up from behind. It shrieked and dived at me. Startled, I dropped the journal I was writing in and ran… Do these sniveling rats with wings know how valuable that journal is!?! I’ll have to find some warrior looking to make a quick gem or two to retrieve it.
ANYWAYS - For those who may come face to face with these infamous winged rats, do not fret. They are honestly more annoying than dangerous. It doesn’t take much to knock them out of the sky. A swipe, possibly two and they are down. Their dive is fairly readable. They actually freeze for a brief moment at the apex before their dive. Either attack or dodge out of the way at this point.
The one that startled me ran before I could kill it, but not before I got a swipe in with my trusty dagger Drimel. If you see a bat with a scarred left wing, tell him Meran sends his regards!

Bestiary - Masher Goblin
The goblins have always been unpleasant, but never hostile. They were a fairly isolated tribe. Kept to themselves and never hunted outside of their territories. When the Corruption came, this all changed. A small insurrection formed of the goblin purists who saw this as their chance to rid the mountain of the humans. Overnight the peaceful chief was banished along with his now maimed supporters. In their place rose a legion of angry and hostile goblins unknown to man.
Of them all, the Masher must be the most frightening. Towering 10 feet tall, these monstrosities have grown far too large for the average goblin. They stumble around with their gigantic belly out front with only a loin cloth to hide what is at any average person’s eye level. I pray that a gust of wind never travel through the Caeldippo Caves, their usual hunting grounds, and reveal what surely could not be unseen…
For those who must come face to face with a Masher - fret not. Their chosen weapon, a giant club, may be intimidating, but is incredibly heavy. A Masher must crank the bulbous weapon above their head before bringing it back down to the dirt in their attack. In this time period, most warriors should possess the mindset to simply move out of the way. While the Masher recovers from their heavy attack, they remain wide open to counter attacks. Be wary though, one does not simply walk away from a Masher attack if struck. I send my regards to any lethargic warriors who met their untimely end at the hand of the ghastly Masher.

Bestiary - Dark Claw
As awful this Corruption is, I can’t help but feel I was destined to witness it. Wanting to be a great wildlife writer, but with no new material to address is difficult. Most creatures of the mountain have been well documented over the past couple decades. This Corruption though, it leaves us at a disadvantage. There are now gaps in our knowledge of what lurks out there. No matter. I, Meran Joseph. will do my part. I will rise to the challenge and catalog these new beasts for the world to see!
I will start with the Dark Claw - The first monster to rise from this Corruption. Pure evil drips from its oblong body, reminding me of the shadowy figures in the nightmares of my youth. Their beady red eyes show absolutely no emotion. This could perhaps be the most frightening aspect of them. There is no malice, just an absent minded hunger for innocent flesh.
They stalk their victim until just the right moment, in which they briefly pause then, in almost lightning fashion, lunge with their claw out in front of them! I haven't seen many walk away from such a gash. Luckily, these beasts are incredibly frail. Just a swipe or two of one's sword should put this evil to rest. Be careful though, for they rarely travel alone. Surrounded by a gang of these Dark Claws should put even the most experienced warrior on edge.

Maybe the Corruption isn’t all that bad? Someone is now able to live out their dream. Expect it ladies and gentlemen. The Corrupted Beasts of Morta - A coffee table book by Meran Joseph.

Lore 112 - Old Town, New House
Wrapped up the Bergson job today. A small part of the house had burned down. Margaret had attempted to teach John’s newly betrothed, Mary, about magic. Sweet girl, but apparently lousy at the art. A rogue fireball escaped and burned the portion of the house down. No matter. The village kicked in and helped. After all, John’s father Samuel has done so much for us these past couple years. The house was back up to its grand status in just two days.
Mary swore off magic. Probably for the best. She does however emit such a motherly aura. Her and John will have quite the family some day.
Peter - carpenter
Mary may not partake in the battles, but she is vital to keeping the family together. Her encouragement is the light in the darkness that surrounds Morta.

Lore 111 - Sand Traps
I made the mistake of traveling through the desert lands of Morta. It was nothing but a vast landscape of sand with only the occasional stone building peppered around to break up the monotony. The sun itself - blinding.
Alarmingly, several tomes contradicted what I had witnessed. They described the area as fields of green as far as one can see with nothing but a soft breeze to endure. One book briefly described a time where the Wind Goddess brought rains to this area, but I can only assume she must have stopped at some point.
I digress though. The real point of this account is to recite an incident that nearly took my life. I was simply walking towards the closest ruin for examination when the very ground beneath me churned. I began sinking with the sand! It wasn’t quick sand though where one simply sinks down. No, this was quite literally a whirlpool of sand forming at my feet.
Slightly panicked, I began looking for something to pull myself out. When the monstrous mouth full of teeth emerged at the center of the pit - I lost it. I am embarrassed for the pleas of help I must have shrieked as the thing’s tongue slowly moistened its lips in anticipation of my arrival.
After a time of struggling, I began to accept my fate. I closed my eyes to take a moment to feel the light of the sun upon my skin one final time. Or at least I tried. After a brief moment of basking, something had walked between the sun and I. Irritated I opened my eyes to complain to this being robbing me of my existential moment… Then common sense kicked in. I yelled for help as a large man reached down, grabbed my shoulder and pulled at me with a sheer brute force. I thought my body would snap in two from the pressure of both the man and sand pulling at me, but my hero won out and my body in whole left the sand with a resounding CRACK!
The pit quickly calmed. The monstrous head at the center disappeared into the ground to await its next victim. The man that saved my life was none other than Joey from the Bergsons. I thanked him, but he simply nodded his head. A person of few words I suppose. He escorted me to the nearest settlement and went on his way.
What an adventure… I am still getting sand out of crevices I dare not speak of, but at least I still stand here.

Lore 110 - The Girl and Her Bow
The target, however large it is, stands just a small dot in the distance. The notched arrow points true. The wood of the drawn bow creaks under the pressure, but the girls hands hold anchored. Her feet are firmly planted upon the ground. Her stance rigid, unmoving, yet relaxed.
The girl stands motionless, feeling the weight of the bow string in her fingers. She takes note of the light breeze from the west, the occasional flurry whipping her hair around. The air feels refreshing on her sun-soaked skin as she adjusts her aim. She loosens her hand as the arrow departs. The feathers scrape against the bow as it leaves its resting place. The soft twang of the bow strings brings comfort to the girl's ears.
She lets her breath out; her job is done.
The arrow whistles through the air.
The crowd slowly stands.
A lifetime passes.
*THUD*
The crowd jumps and hollers. The girl, Linda, lets a smile escape as she places her bow upon her back. Raising her hands, she unties the blindfold from her head.
Linda is stringing her bow and sharpening her arrows. When the Corruption spreads, she will stand ready!
