Batstarion and his trophy
A huge congratulations to Neil Newbon for winning Best Performance at The Game Awards for his portrayal of Astarion from BG3! And yes I'm back again with more bat drawings >:3c
My problem is that people always assume you are playing a "heroic", "kind" or at least "sweet" character. It never occurs to them there might be a murderer next to Ascended Astarion, a manipulator like him who plays along with him, or someone even more frightening. It's like they are literally removing the existence of evil, cunning characters who can exploit their position. Being immortal, you have a lot of time to change and improve your position.
Not everyone who chooses Ascended Astarion has a "daddy complex" or "bdsm kink".
Quick thought to that Itâs not about role playing or playing an evil character. Itâs about the people who wash down a depiction of a toxic relationship. people are judging those ascended Astarion because they try to validate and downplay that he became an abuser himself. Itâs not about whether or not you like the tragic behind it but itâs all about people saying that there would be nothing wrong with that. I donât care if you ascend him or not, I ascended him in a playthrough too because of replayability, but I do care about what die hard ascended fans post on the Internet. Some of it is just not great.
Also on a side note, in dnd 5e rules as written if your character becomes a vampire spawn you lose agency over them and they become an npc, so thatâs with that.
Im open to discussions as long as they are civil of course.
What's the difference? From the character's point of view, they may think that everything is fine because the couple is evil in themselves. And yes, the evil game affects it. How can evil be toxic to evil? Astarion cannot control our character. I have no idea why. You can break up with him after you have become his spawn, but you still have a tadpole. And you will be completely independent, you will have a solo ending and a solo epilogue. If this is not changed, then the theory of becoming a bride, and not a spawn, will be extremely relevant. He never said he could control us. He only said that we would be obedient. But it's hard for me to talk about it when the game is in a state of "we'll add 200 more patches and everything will change."
It doesn't matter at all if someone thinks he is good, sweet, loving, and so on. They may think that's what he is for their character. It's their game. Leave people alone. Do not confuse reality with fiction, and do not think that others are confused. You automatically think player's character is unhappy in a relationship with Ascended Astarion, just because "A Astarion is an abuser". But no, it's not like that for everyone. And I repeat, it really depends on how you play and what kind of character you play. I'm sure if we were Astarion's puppet, it would be visible in the epilogue. And this is not visible, because there is an answer option where our character is absolutely happy with everything. Six months is a decent time for them to have any conflict.
In your role-playing game, you are a DM, and it's up to you who you are in most cases. That's why you don't have to spend time trying to convince people how they perceive the characters. Let them perceive them the way they want. The main thing is that they like it. I've had enough discussions to understand it's useless.
"You can play as you wish, just admit that is not healthy and toxic"
I did not know that I have to admit things to people like them to approve of me over something I enjoy? What if I don't think it is an evil ending? For me, he's a spoiled princess, and I'll be his prince charming. We will live happily ever after.
Go do something productive instead. If you are so worried about people getting out of abusive relationships, go and join an actual support program or charity. People can enjoy stuff in the safety of their homes and do not need to justify their thinking to entlitled people like you.
Honestly, I'm so tired of people not respecting each other's opinions over a course of a game. They want to play the evil power couple? Perfect. They want to play the abused victim. Go ahead. They want to play the happy vampire obsessed lovers. Please do!
You want to play the I can fix him and he will forever be grateful to me. Suit yourself!
Just get away from the others that you consider not to play the game with your perspective!!!!! Is not that difficult. Just move those little fingers on the screen and scroll up!
What happens in your head is not what this discussion is about. You can make up whatever you wish. You can enjoy dark and twisted characters. I do, too. Ascension Astarion is exceptionally well written and acted.
It's about people whining that calling the ending tragic "bullying" or demanding that creators have a "neutral" opinion about it. That's the step that goes too far.
People, especially abuse survivors have the right to decline that particular flavour of storytelling as much as you are allowed to enjoy it.
You get that not allowing people to enjoy it is exactly what happened here though? OP posted something frustrated with being shamed by people, because it does happen. People do post about how you must be a terrible person to like ascended at all, or must not be a survivor. And OP posted complaining about that and people immediately started arguing with them.
Like how are ascended fans supposed to just enjoy what they like when they literally can't post about it in any positive way without getting people arguing with them?
I enjoy lots of dark fiction. Stories about serial killers, cannibals, kidnappers. See, I said that openly and nobody will have a problem with that. Where the problem begins is when I say "that main character in the dark fiction I enjoyed is actually not at all problematic, let me tell you why and when you disagree you are a bully" Like you all have been doing excessively during the last weeks.
If you think a controlling, manipulating man who gained power in a pact with a devil and killing thousands of people is a healthy partner in a happy relationship that's entirely your right to think! The thing is: People have the same right to disagree. If that alone is souring your enjoyment, it's a self made problem you can easily end yourself by stopping to seek widespread validation for this. You will not get it.
idk if Iâm going crazy but from what Iâve gathered thus far:
take #1 Astarion is gay, you cannot romance him as a woman, why would he seek protection from a female MC
take #2 looks like you can do so but only if you ascend him and become subservient and obedient to him
The funniest thing about the ascended girlies is that they donât have to do all this. They write these 500K essays about their roleplay and their Tav and it always ends up being offensive and ignorant.
Itâs a video game, saying âI find this thing hotâ is enough. So many gamers massacre the grove to get the minthara sex scene, and no one is bothered. Dark Justiciar Shadowheart exists, and people go down that way sometimes solely for the gear. Itâs all fine.
The 500K essay full of weird stuff is the issue. The âyou canât criticize aa if you donât donate to dv centersâ take is the issue. The homophobia is the issue.
We all saw the hissy fit about the ascended sex scene, itâs okay to just say âI find it hotâ and keep the quiet part quiet.

Because it's not a tragic ending??? What are you talking about? The funny thing is that you speak for the writers. ASTARION'S WRITER CALLED IT AN EVIL ENDING. LITERALLY, HE SAID IT HIMSELF. No one has ever said "this is a tragic ending" or "this is a bad ending." This is the ending at the "I have seized power" level. In your opinion, evil cannot be happy. This is as stupid as you can imagine. If something does not end in "good", it does not mean it ends in "tragic". And until you understand this, you will not be able to delve into adult works. It's like you're reading a children's story where either good wins or you lose. This is not a children's story. Speaking of a neutral opinion, It's about another writer who didn't write Astarion. And yes, when other writer speaks out about a character they didn't write, it's not so good. And when they blame a player for their statements, it's EVEN WORSE. The person everyone is talking about is not Astarion's writer, and I even feel sorry for Rooney because of this. Ascended Astarion does not lose. Durge does not lose when they take over the brain and subjugate the world. Is this a tragic ending for whom? For the world? well, maybe. For the characters? No. They can be happy in their position. Your level of denial is so strong. I don't think you can even imagine this is possible. It's terribly funny if "well he's not a good hero anymore" and you think "then he's unhappy." God help us. bruuuHhhhH Gale's God is there too. Is this considered a bad ending? He literally became a God. His cat and mother are whining their son has more important things to do now. Personal goals, personal dignity. Who lost in this situation? Gale? I do not think so. Speaking of tragedies. The only Tragic Endings at that moment: Durge, who does not control their future (under Bhaal control, by the way, you can compare this with "control" Ascended Astarion and see OBVIOUS difference) and Laezel warrior Vlaakith. Moreover, Laezel has an open ending and you can interpret it as good or as bad, but the atmosphere looks ominous. And still you have no proof of what exactly happened to Laezel. Literally, the script says "open ending".
Seriously, I can't help it if you all slept through literature class. Ascended Astarion is a textbook tragic character. I'm mind boggled that you seem to think this is some kind of insult you have to defend him from. It's not.
It's a perfectly, very well written tragedy - a man striving for revenge and healing but choosing the path that makes him, ultimately step into the role of his own abuser. A man that literally signs a Mephistophelic pact, the ultimate road to tragedy. Larian knows their classics, they did it so well.
Tragic or tragedy is no insult or degradation, it's a defined form of storytelling. And if you refuse to see that I'm afraid that the discussion has run to a point where I will step out. Enjoy your gaming experience - and maybe read up on narrative structures a bit. It will make you appreciate the quality of the game even more, promised.
I think you've confused your literature class with the church.
The funny thing is that you haven't answered more than one of my questions. You didn't even bother to analyze the character. Otherwise, you would know he was seeking power and freedom, not revenge and healing. Karlach seeks revenge. Their behavior and goals are different in the end.
I've had enough storytelling lessons to figure that out. If any evil ending was a "tragedy" then games like Tyranny would not exist. The hero must suffer from his actions in order for it to be a tragedy. I don't see Astarion's suffering in the epilogue. Funnily enough, Spawn suffers the most in the finale, and he also has to live in a dangerous place underground and never see the sun again. A tragedy, what can I say.
Okay. One last post to answer your questions. By the way, I didn't visit "a literature class", I hold a university degree in English and German literature and your takes are not as hot as you think they are. People have glorified problematic fictional characters since the dawn of time, you are just one more in a long, long row of people. Well then, your questions. 1. How can evil be toxic to evil? Of course can an evil character be toxic to another evil one. The prime characteristic of an evil character is that they usually would not see themselves as "evil" and, besides their morally questionable life choices, have needs and emotions like any normal person would have, which can be neglected or hurt. A good movie to watch is "Natural Born Killers" if you want an example. 2. Ascended Astarion does not lose. Durge does not lose when they take over the brain and subjugate the world. Is this a tragic ending for whom? Skipping Durge as I have not played it, sorry. It is not about "losing". Astarion himself thinks that he is winning. He even might think he is happy. To achieve this goal of the happiness he thinks he feels he has sacrificed 7000 people. Isn't that tragic for you? 3. Gale's God is there too. Is this considered a bad ending? He literally became a God. You talk terribly often about "losing" and "winning" here. It's not about that. To quote your own words "It's like you're reading a children's story where either good wins or you lose". Nobody talks about "losing" except you. Ascension, Godhood or, in Karlach's case, being a mindflayer take huge sacrifices to be achieved. I haven't seen Gale's epilogue and I will not spoil myself for this conversation so I will stick to Karlach, if you don't mind. According to your logic the Mindflayer ending is a good ending as she herself wanted it and in the epilogue says she is happy. . But it still is very obvious that, compared to the Karlach we once knew, this is an empty husk of the cheerful, vivid person she has once been. This also fits to what you said above: The hero must suffer from his actions in order for it to be a tragedy. I don't see Astarion's suffering in the epilogue.
Just because someone says they aren't suffering, they still can be a tragic character. That is actually the greatest tragedy, when the character himself doesn't see that he is part of one. You can suffer without realising it. Ascended Astartion says he is happy. But he acts paranoid, resentful and bitter. Look at his actions, not at his words. Another great way this game is written. But, please, if you want to win so badly, here, have a it: You won! Take your price! What the rest of us ask of you all is simply to not throw a hissy fit if people disagree with you, especially abuse survivors like Neil is one. He has the right to be apalled by glorification of an abusive character and if you can't grasp that, I am very sorry indeed. And that's that, hope I answered all of your questions.
My problem is that people always assume you are playing a "heroic", "kind" or at least "sweet" character. I am happy to inform you that we have won. Of course, people will start whining about the "freedom" option, but you have to take that our characters may be happy with their living conditions. I do not even know what kind of freedom we are talking about, considering that Astarion talks about dirt and tents in this context. I think he's just very jealous, and I think it's cute. The main thing is that he does not mock us, does not beat us, does not do anything terrible. He wants us to live a better life with him. You can also breakup with him as a mortal or as a spawn. It seems these versions are incomplete, but they are possible. This is a wonderful epilogue for an overbearing couple in love! Or for those who like "angst" in the style of the "forbidden princess", but it all depends on your choice in the game. Don't forget this is a ROLEPLAYING GAME and therefore your choice in the dialogue determines how the character feels. Personally, my character is happy. She lives in comfort and convenience, with authoritative man nearby who can protect her. She has a lot of ambitions and she can realize them. Yes, he is obsessed and jealous, but she likes it because she loves him. There is no question of any "slavery", I hope you understand this.

Well I know you probably don't understand. I never said the art was bad. The art is very cute, and I was even asking other people how can someone draw something so cute with malicious intent. I even mentioned here on Tumblr (in this very thread) that it was adorable even if it was meant to be "bad". What I said was pathetic was the intent behind the art, which to me at that moment looked derogatory. I got the impression it was drawn with the "abusive drunkard" type in mind, which wouldn't surprise me if it were, all considered. I was wrong? Maybe? Who knows. I know what I saw, but it looks like it was deleted, and I wasn't smart enough to screenshot everything like you people do. What else can I say? You're right, I didn't delete the comment, not because I wanted to leave it there, but because I don't really live on twitter. I open it maybe once a week, this happened 2 days ago and I only realized today what was going on. I have a life and job and don't live on social media. Do you?
Despite that, someone felt the need to insult me saying "this is what happens when you never leave the house".
'Kayyy.... Whatever, keep doing what you do best. Thankfully I can just go on with my life, I honestly have better things to do than replying to ganging up rabid bullies here and on twitter.
It's not you, darling, it's me. I have standards.
I cannot believe I have to come back to tumblr because of stuff we dealt with in the HP fandom twenty years ago already. Listen. Content creators don't owe you anything. I am sorry to tell you that it is time you step away from that game, breathe some fresh air and get yourself educated on media literacy. You are free to play around with the themes and characters on your own. You have that opportunity to rewrite everything from BG3 and nobody will stop you from it. You can even take your funny little quotes and put them into any context you like. But if you stray away from the story the content creators wanted to tell, twist it to your own liking and then rub your alternative, glorifying view of an abuser into their face and they disagree with it? Or show displeasure? You have to accept that. Gracefully, if possible. Choosing Ascension is a valid choice of many the game gives you, a darker way to tread. BG3 has lot of dark options. You can kill children, you can torture people, you can lie, cheat and murder basically everyone, and yes, you can freely choose this, it's a game after all. But if you start morally defending those actions outside of the game, people will disagree. Choosing Ascension means that Astarion will continue the cycle of abuse he suffered from. Ascended Astarion has stepped up to take his abuser's place. It's all there. You just need to listen "We share a palace, share power, live lives eternal in each other's arms. What more could anyone want?" Tav: "Freedom" "Not this again. I give you wealth, power, pleasure - every decadence that can be afforderd to a person. But you'd rather - what - sleep in the dirt again? You are my consort, and I will se you living the best life. Even if you don't appreciate it."
Ascended Astarion, in his own words. He decides what is best for Tav and doesn't consider their opinion on it at all. He is always watching, he belittles the companions he has traveled with, asks Tav to spy on them for him. All his own words you choose to ignore. That is abusive behaviour. This is an abusive character. If you do not want to accept this, fine, play in your little creative sandbox, write your fanfics, do your fanart. Be creative. But if you are offended by others, including his creators saying plainly what they meant with their creation and what their boundaries concerning this are you are on a very, very special level of entitlement. "Safe space" and "inclusion" doesn't mean what you think it means. It doesn't mean you can say everything that goes through your mind without a reaction. Spawn and Ascension are not a football team or a colour choice. The narrative is very clear: one of them is the tragic ending and y'all can't stand to hear that so much that you froth at the mouth about a cartoon bat and an "Mkay" since days. About "winning": Through Act 1 and 2 Astarion himself wants ascension. It is his main goal. If you prevent ascension he is first mad at Tav but then realises that he has found freedom and happiness although he "lost" ascension. As if the writers wanted to teach us a lesson about that what we want is not necessary a wise or morally good choice.
I'm too lazy to answer you but...
To begin with, writer does not have to teach us anything, he just creates options for us to develop the story.
Secondly, how does it concern you what a person considers good? Many of these people write not for you, but for themselves, that they like everything in their game. So, you see this and start to convince people. In fact, you are breaking into someone else's space and trying to prove something to someone.
It feels like when someone says "ascended astarion is good and it's a good ending" you get blown up your ass.
It's sad, but that's your problem, not those who think AA is good. Go back to Twitter, where there is only one meaning in the role-playing game "which the author teaches".
Morality is relative. Your thinking is black and white. Like I'm not even kidding. The fact that you call the evil ending tragic shows a lot. Besides, morality has nothing to do with happiness. You can be immoral and happy. That's what's good.
Sadly you're just one in a long line of people glorifying a problematic character. Your idea about what fiction does is completely self centered. You can make demands but art is not there to fulfil them. Go to AO3 instead. Plenty to your taste there.
You also don't understand the concept of role play videogames. The character you invent or fill the gaps with your story is not Astarion, it is Tav. That's your playground, your tabula rasa. How about using that instead demanding that other people's creations bend to your will.
The actor of Astarion himself is obviously disgusted by glorifying Ascended. It's time to let go. Instead y'all pout and demand his validation. You won't get it. Take it as a wake up call.
Zettelwirtschaft

yall ever heard about the wave
???? like the thing you do at sport events??
no, i mean this social experiment started by a history teacher in calofornia in 1967
im IntriguedÂ
itâs creepy not so much like paranormal but as in itâs a scary look at human nature. hang on a sec ill explain it
alright so. in 1967, a new history teacher at Cubberly High School in Northern California named Ron Jones was teaching his class about the Holocaust and Hitlerâs rise to power. At some point during the lesson, many of his students began to ask why the rest of Germany had stood by and done nothing, and how afterwards they could have said they didnât know. Many said that they would never allow something like that to happen, but most simply couldnât understand how the population had allowed it back then. This made Ron curious: what was the answer? Why had so many Germans joined and tolerated the Nazis as their neighbors were dragged away? He realized there was no way of knowing, not without being there, and certainly no way of teaching it - unless, maybe, they could experience something similar.Â
The next day, Ron came in and began to command his class differently than usual. He had stricter rules, making students stand when asking or answering questions and having them fix their posture. He said it was a lesson on discipline and the phrase âstrength through disciplineâ was written on the board.Â
The students, shockingly responded positively to the stricter rules; it was as if they had just been waiting for this and wanted more. They worked as a team and answered questions correctly, even sitting quietly until Ron dismissed them at the end of class.Â
In the next two days, the phrases âstrength through communityâ and âactionâ appeared on the board. Ron announced to the class that their new rules and ideas were now the cornerstones of the group called the Wave. Their mottos were the three phrases on the board, and he introduced them to a salute (made by curling oneâs right hand into the shape of a wave and tapping oneâs left shoulder with it). The kids practiced both the motto and the salute that day.
Everything was going well in this experiment: Ron was increasingly seen as an incredibly important leader, the kids were being more well behaved, they were ahead in their studies, all good things, so Ron decided to continue the Wave. In class, he gave the students Wave membership cards, some of which had red xâs on the back. The xâs indicated that those people were to monitor the other members of the Wave and report directly to Ron if someone broke a rule.Â
Additionally that day, Ron gave the instruction to recruit members to the Wave; all were invited and all were equal in the Wave.
And recruit they did.
Later that week, there were over 200 members of the Wave. The pep rally became an official Wave rally where dozens of new members were sworn in. As the group grew, most everyone joined. However, if someone did not join, they were likely to find themselves very alone and possibly being threatened or hurt by Wave members.Â
By the 5th day, Ron knew things had spiraled out of control. He had grown into a mythical leader, and the students carried out his orders without hesitation, even if these orders never existed in the first place and were grown from within the Wave. He decided to tell the students that there would be a televised announcement of the Waveâs candidate announcement for the presidential election, and that all members should attend the rally later that day.Â
When they arrived, the hundreds of students were greeted with a blank screen and Ron. He told them the true nature of the Wave; how it had been born as an experiment that had grown exponentially until he had to end it. The students were shocked, and some even cried. They had all believed in the Wave wholeheartedly after just 5 short days.
The Wave is terrifying because it is real. Not so long ago, a history teacher fresh out from college was able to turn a school into a military state in just 5 days. We as humans are so easily led into fascist dictatorships and we so rarely question what goes on around us. The Wave is a testament to that, and a scary one.Â
Thereâs a really great German film of the same name (âDie Welleâ - The Wave) based on this experiment - rather than stopping after 5 days however, the teacher lets it continue and things get much, MUCH worse. Itâs a terrifying movie, but fascinating too.
The book is a standard school read in Germany and therefore very well known here. Guess why.

Medieval castle stairs were often built to ascend in narrow, clockwise spirals so right-handed castle defenders could use their swords more easily. This design put those on the way up at a disadvantage (unless they were left-handed). The steps were also uneven to give defenders the advantage of anticipating each stepâs size while attackers tripped over them. Source Source 2 Source 3
Not really the best illustration since it totally negates the effect by having a wide open space for those ascending. Castle tower staircases tended to look like this:
Extremely tight quarters, with a central supporting pillar that is very, very thoroughly in the way of your right arm.
Wider, less steep designs tend to come later once castles moved away from being fortresses to simply noble family homes with the advent of gunpowder.
Oh! Pre-gunpowder military tactics are my jam! I donât know why, but this is one of my favorite little details about defensive fortifications, because the majority handedness of attackers isnât usually something you think about when studying historical wars. But strategically-placed walls were used basically worldwide as a strategy to secure gates and passages against advancing attackers, because most of the worldâs population is right-handed (and has been since the Stone Age).
Pre-Columbian towns near the Mississippi and on the East coast did this too. They usually surrounded their towns with palisades, and they would build the entrance to the palisade wall in a zigzag â always with the wall to the right as you entered, to hinder attackers and give an advantage to the defender. Hereâs some gates with some examples of what Iâm talking about:
Notice that, with the exception of the last four (which are instead designed to congregate the attackers in a space so they can be picked off by archers, either in bastions or on the walls themselves) and the screened gate (which, in addition to being baffled, also forces the attackers to defend their flank) all of these gates are designed with central architectural idea that itâs really hard to kill someone with a wall in your way. In every culture in the world, someone thought to themselves, âHey itâs hard to swing a weapon with a wall on your right-hand side,â and then specifically built fortifications so that the attackers would always have the wall on their right. And I think thatâs really neat.
Ooh, ooh, also: Bodiam Castle in Sussex used to have a right-angled bridge so any attacking forces would be exposed to archery fire from the north-west tower on their right side (ie: sword in the right hand, shield on the useless left side):
These tactics worked so well for so long because until quite recently lefties got short shrift and had it trained (if they were lucky) or beaten out of them.
Use of sword and shield is a classic demonstration of how right-handedness predominated. Thereâs historical mention of left-handed swordsmen (gladiators and Vikings), and what a problem they were for their opponents, but that only applies to single combat.
A left-handed hoplite or housecarl simply couldnât fight as part of a phalanx or shield wall, since the shields were a mutual defence (the right side of the shield covered its ownerâs left side, its left side covered the right side of his neighbour to the left, and so on down the line) and wearing one on the wrong arm threw the whole tactic out of whack.
Jousting, whether with or without an Italian-style tilt barrier, was run shield-side to shield-side with the lance at a slant (except for the Scharfrennen, a highly specialised style thatâs AFAIK unique.) Consequently left-handed knights were physically unable to joust.
Thereâs a creditable theory (I first read it in âA Knight and His Horseâ, Š Ewart Oakeshott 1962, 1998 and many other places since) that a knightâs âdestrierâ horse - from dexter, ârightâ - was trained to lead with his right forefoot so that any instinctive swerve would be to the right, away from collision while letting the rider keep his shield between him and harm. (In flying, if a pilot hears âbreak!â with no other details, the default evasive direction is right.)
The construction of plate armour, whether specialised tournament kit or less elaborate battle gear, is noticeably âright-handedâ - so even if a wealthy knight had his built âleft-handedâ it would be a waste of time and money; he would still be a square peg in a world of round holes and none of the other kids would play with him.
Even after shields and full armour were no longer an essential part of military equipment, right-hand use was still enforced until quite recently, and to important people as well as ordinary ones - it happened to George VI, father of the present Queen of England. Most swords with complex hilts, such as swept-hilt rapiers and some styles of basket-hilt broadsword, are assymetrical and constructed for right handers. Hereâs my schiavonaâŚ
It can be held left-handed, but using it with the proper thumb-ring grip, and getting maximum protection from the basket, is right-handed only. (More here.) Some historical examples of left-hand hilts do exist, but theyâre rare, and fencing masters had the same âlearn to use your right handâ bias as tourney organisers, teachers and almost everyone else. Right-handers were dextrous, but left-handers were sinister, etc., etc.
However, several predominantly left-handed families did turn their handedness into advantage, among them the Kerrs / Carrs, a notorious Reiver family along the England-Scotland Borders, by building their fortress staircases with a spiral the other way to the OP image.
This would seem to be a bad idea, since the attackers (coming upstairs) no longer have their right arms cramped against the centre pillar - however it worked in the Kerrsâ favour because they were used to this mirror-image of reality while nobody else was, and the defender retreating up the spiral had that pillar guarding his right side, while the attacker had to reach out around itâŚ
For the most part Reiver swords werenât elaborate swept-hilt rapiers but workmanlike basket-hilts. Some from Continental Europe have the handedness of my schiavona with thumb-rings and assymmetrical baskets, but the native âBritish Baskethiltâ is a variant of the Highland claymore* and like it seems completely symmetrical, without even a thumb-ring, which gives equal protection to whichever hand is using it.
*Iâm aware there are those who insist âclaymoreâ refers only to two-handers, however the Gaelic term claidheamh-mòr - âbig swordâ - just refers to size, not to a specific type of sword in the way âschiavonaâ or âkarabelaâ or even âkatanaâ does.
While the two-hander was the biggest sword in common use it was the claidheamh-mòr; after it dropped out of fashion and the basket-hilt became the biggest sword in common use, that became the claidheamh-mòr.
When Highlanders in the 1745 Rebellion referred to their basket-hilts as claymores, they obviously gave no thought to the confusion they would create for later compilers of cataloguesâŚ
Also, muskets had their whole âFlint and steel and gunpowderâ thing on the right side so if you tried firing it lefty youâd get a face full of fire. More recently, rifles eject their spent shell casings to the right, so if youâre a lefty you get some hot metal in your eye.
omg why do white ppl love cheese so mu-
I actually didnt know that
The answer is apparently âbecause weâre actually able to eat itâ
Fun fact: white people (specifically Northern European white people) have a genetic mutation that allows them to digest lactose even after weaning, which is abnormal for all mammals and also most humans. Itâs theorized that because Northern Europe doesnât get a lot of sun, an alternative source of vitamin D (like milk) would be a useful trait. Itâs a very recent mutation that would only have happened after humans started domesticating animals like cows and goats.
oh no, my bizarre moment has come, cause lactose tolerance is actually A Thing I Know About because itâs played a fascinating role in human evolution for thousands of years. This chart displays some of the broad trends, but itâs giving near continental averages, which doesnât showcase how this kind of thing really breaks down and some of the surprising exceptions.Â
Lactose tolerance is the majority trait for only a very few population groups: North Europeans (and therefore populations that draw heavily from that stock, such as America,) nomadic central Eurasians, and sub-Saharan pastoralist Africans, but that latter group is often overlooked. The vast majority of Africans cannot process lactose, but certain people groups whose lifestyles have revolved around cattle for thousands of years will have 80% and even approaching 100% lactose tolerance rates. Theyâd be spots of dark green amidst a sea of orange and burgundy on the above chart.Â
Our hunter-gatherer ancestors were almost entirely lactose intolerant, that is definitely the biological norm (and people groups who maintained that lifestyle, such as Native Americans, remained as such â along with groups who transitioned to sedentary agricultural lifestyles, but Iâll get into that). As such, lactose tolerance is an adaptive trait that only became prevalent in environments that exerted strong selective pressure for it. So, cows were domesticated some 10,000 odd years ago in the Middle East (and some have contended for an independent domestication event in Africa as well). In either case, cattle quickly spread across the continent and we know there was milking and cheese production at least 6,000 years ago in both the Nile and Mesopotamia. While cow meat would have been enjoyed by all, in agricultural societies milk and cheese would have been options, but hardly staples as there were plenty of other things to eat as well, and therefore there would have been no selective pressure for processing lactose. Also, sedentary societies had ways of processing milk and cheese that allowed lactose intolerant people to drink/eat dairy products. Fermenting milk or aging cheese breaks down lactose, making it a non issue once ingested. This is why fermented milk may seem utterly foul to many Westerners, but is extremely common in other parts of the world. But, fermentation and aging requires time, and the ability to store things in a single location for weeks or even months. Sedentary societies adapted the milk to fit their biology, but nomadic societies did the reverse.
There are still mobile pastoralist societies in Africa today, and there have been for thousands and thousands of years. For many of them, cows are not one of many dietary options, they are the single dietary staple around which their lifestyle revolves. Biologically, this means you gotta get with the program if you wanna survive. For most mobile tribes, fermentation and aging werenât options, so there would have been strong selective pressure favoring those who could drink milk straight outta the cow, as they would have had an additional, highly nutritious food source available to them. Milk also allowed for a marked shortening of the weaning process, transitioning children from breastmilk to cowâs milk, which would again be advantageous for groups where both the men and women work and are always on the move. Over generations these populations specialized into essentially cow-based lifestyles, creating a survival niche highly advantageous to them, and fast forward thousands of years and there are groups in Africa with near ubiquitous lactose tolerance, while the rest of the continent (and the world really) is nearly entirely intolerant.Â
Many of these same factors would have influenced the central Eurasian populations, which is why Mongolians and other descendants of nomadic steppe peoples are largely lactose tolerant, as mareâs milk would have been a dietary staple (though they also developed efficient ways to ferment it).Â
North Europeans developed lactose tolerance in response to deficiencies in certain nutrients. The northern climate limited Vitamin D production, and the agricultural products available to them were often low on calcium and protein, and so dairy farming developed alongside agriculture to create a more rounded diet (and this was limited to Northern Europeans, as Mediterranean peoples such as the Romans wrote about their great confusion at the northern barbariansâ ability to drink fresh milk)
And I promise all of this is fascinating because the ability to process lactose evolved independently in several different population groups and in response to different factors: lifestyles revolving around cows, lifestyles revolving around horses, deficiencies in climate and agriculture. Besides providing insight into human history and biology, lactose tolerance is also a great example of convergent evolution, where different genetic populations in different environments produce similar results.Â
And uh, thatâs my rant about the role of milk and lactose tolerance in human evolution.Â
Beautifully written, very concise and informative. Good stuff. Interesting stuff. Thanks for your input.
