Indigo Calico The term Indigo Calico, i.e. "蓝印花布" in Chinese, is specifically referred to those fabrics made through herbal indigo materials and the technique called Hollowed-Pattern-Plate-Dyeing-with-liquid-lime-powder. This very technique is a crucial procedure in the whole process of the making of traditional Chinese indigo calico, which is one of the national intangible cuktural heritges of China. This technique actually involves two steps. First, to design a pattern and engrave it in the plate, which in traditional Chinese technique is mainly krafts. Then lay the hollowed-pattern-plate on the cloth, brush some anti-dye material usually made by lime(that's why the technique is called Hollowed-Pattern-Plate-Dyeing-with-liquid-lime-powder), some herbal powder like soy powder and some water to fulfill the hollow in the plate. When it's dry, the anti-dye material would stick to the plate, then sink it into the indigo liquid to dye. However, unlike indigo, the preparation of the rest of the herbal dyeing materials is mostly the same, that is, boiled in water, and the dyeing liquid is the boiled colored water. The preparation of indigo will be described separately later; this tweet takes tea-dyeing as an example of the former. The raw material for tea-dyeing can be either tea leaves or its branches, even roots. Different species or different parts of plant can produce different colors. This calico is made through a technique called Tie-Dye(扎染, or 绞缬).

In the traditional Chinese dyeing techniques, there are various ways to leave textile a pattern, while its essence is invariably to block the dyeing liquid from imbuing the fabric, generating the original color of the fabric or different degrees of color.

Tie-dye is basically through the bundle of needle and threads, intentionally or randomly, leaving the cloth in a natural pattern.
