A lonely inventor / first semester of uni

‘There was a boy who didn’t like to speak. He grew out his bowl-cut but was still afraid of the dark, so he built some friends to watch over him when he slept or had to go outside at night. Very soon, strange folk with guns started asking for friends like his. But the boy knew they already had friends, so his protectors killed them all. The boy was never scared again.’
