It's reasonable for many to have a fear of the deep ocean, as no one has traveled beneath to see its beauty and wonders. One of those few wonders is the Merfolk, beings of human and fish combined, with abnormal skin and keen eyes that glow across the room.
It has been written that the Merfolk are dangerous creatures whose magical voices could hypnotize any sailor into the deepest depths of the sea, where the ships sink, and the humans drown.
But what if there was one who defies all traditions in the name of love?
"I can't believe we get to see this wonderful concert," A mermaid giggled.
"I know, the princes' voices are very beautiful, and completely moving," A merman added. "King Gwi-Ma must be in a wonderous mood to allow this to happen."
"I can't wait!"
💜
Jinu groaned as he swam around, completely annoyed. The concert was gonna start in a few minutes, but one brother still hadn't been found.
"Ae-jung," Jinu sighed. "Have you seen Jeong-hui? He was supposed to be here on time, like he promised."
"Hm, can't say that I have," Ae-jung shrugged as he brushed his hair. "But you know Jeong-hui, he always seems to be completely invisible until we see he's gone. Right, Ju-ho?"
Ju-ho made a huh sound as he looked back at Ae-jung, clearly distracted by his muscles to care.
"Myung?"
"Probably out there, doing his own thing again." Myung mentioned. "You know, hunting."
"Do not tell me he is doing what I think he's doing," Jinu muttered.
The brothers looked back at each other before the empowering force that was King Gwi-Ma, who swam with intensity as he looked down at his children.
"Boys, are you ready? The ship above us slowly crawls over our domain, do you know what must be done?"
"To sink the human ships as punishment for killing our kind for many years," The four spoke in unison.
"Hm, where's Jeong-hui?"
Jinu looked back at the others, a nervous expression on his face. He swam tall as Gwi-Ma swam close, his eyes gleaming and glaring down at them. It was clear that even the simplest of lies could not deter him from the answer that he already knew.
"You have an hour to bring him here to me," Gwi-Ma ordered.
"Yes, Father," the boys said as they swam past their father to the vast seas.
💜
Jeong-hui was different from other Merfolk because he was curious about humans and their ships. After his first drowning, he examined sunken ships and learned about human items inside. His curiosity made him wonder about the world above the waves.
He did tell his brothers about his newfound guilt and curiosity, and surprisingly, they were supportive but warned him to be careful because of their father; ultimately, they found it pleasant.
So it wasn't surprising that he skipped the sinking concert to indulge in his hobby until he was caught. As he swam inside the ship, he spotted a forked object that shone within a small light. It seemed to attract him as he swam over to it.
"Hm, what a strange artifact," Jeong-hui mumbled as he carefully picked up a small forked item. "It looks like Father's…but so small,"
Jeong-hui hums as he carefully takes it and places it inside his bag. He continued to swim around the sunken ship as he continued to collect more items.
Jeong-hui continued to search until small voices from the distance alerted him to look out of one of the many ship holes to see his brothers call out. He sighed as he rested his elbow.
"Found him," Myung spoke up.
Jeong-hui sank down as Jinu swam towards him in a hurry.
"What are you doing here?" Jinu spoke. "Jeong-hui, you promised you would be here on time, and yet you swim to another sunken ship? Before our concert?"
"You know I had no interest in that," Jeong-hui whispered, swimming up. "The idea of harming humans already left a horrid taste in my mouth."
"You are a mermaid, we drown people," Ae-jung sighed, his voice tinged with guilt. "It's not like we had a choice, but I wonder if there's more to our role than just following tradition?"
"But we do, we have a choice, you just choose to follow."
"Jeong-hui, our father will harm us if we disregard the rules and traditions," Jinu explained. "I don't like it either but as mermaids, we need to learn and respect our origins."
"Uh, guys,"
"Not now, Ju-ho," Jinu scowled, still glaring at Jeong-hui. "You need to be more careful, if you know the consequences of your actions."
Ju-ho stared back until he tapped Ae-jung on the shoulder. As he turned, he noticed an aggressive shark swimming towards them.
"Look out!"
The mermen swam up as the shark clashed against the sunken ship, wood floating in the air. It growled as it noticed its prey swimming away. It continued its hunt, almost biting Jinu's tail, before swishing towards Ae-jung, who let it crash against the glass, watching it as it floated around, its eyes now focused on Jeong-hui.
Jeong-hui, using his quick wits, swam over to the small window, easily able to swim through it, but alas, the shark cannot, so it gets stuck there. The brothers joined back up with each other, staring at the struggling shark.
"Are you always hunted by sharks?"
"Not all the time," Jeong-hui shrugged as he swam up. "Now, are you gonna follow me or go home?"
The others looked at each other before following up towards the surface, where the sun shone.
"Where are we going?"
"Well, I have gotten an expert to help me learn about the human stuff," Jeong-hui explained. "Her name is Heuimi-Han, and she's perfect for this job."
Jeong-hui carefully swam to a lonely rock, setting his bag of items onto it. "Heuimi?"
"Is that a…bird?" Jinu asked, confused.
Heuimi-han laughed as she grabbed a nearby telescope. "Oh! Merman at Port Rock! Merman at Port Rock!" As she set it down, she jumped, seeing Jeong-hui nearby. "Whoa! What a swim!"
"Hello, Heuimi-Han," Jeong-Hui greeted. "I got some new stuff today."
"Oh! Let me see, let me see," Heuimi grinned as she took the forked object. "Oh, these babies are wonderful! You're looking at the wonderous dinglehopper!"
"A dinglehopper?" Ae-jung questioned.
"Why yes, a dinglehopper!" Heuimi grinned as she carefully began to comb her feathers. "See? This baby is how humans use to comb thier lovely hair, like myself."
"Hmm, seems about…odd," Jinu muttered.
"Well, what about this?" Ju-wo asked, handing her a small trumpet-like object.
"Oh, um, lemme see," Heuimi examined it. "Ah! A snarfblatt! A musical instrument in the human world, I'll tell ya."
Jinu pinched his nose in annoyance as he noticed that the rest of his brothers were examining the others. He swims over, grabbing the bag.
"Look, this is all very nice and all, but we need to go," Jinu spoke up. "We have a concert to get to and we can't afford to be late."
"Ah, we should be going," Jeong-hui sighed. "Thank you again, Heiumi,"
"Ah, don't wait up, kid! I'll see you soon!"
The merman waved the bird goodbye as they dived down into the ocean. *
A pair of yellow eyes gleamed down at his crystal ball, staring at Jeong-hui.
"Ah, sweet boy," a voice laughed delightfully. "So enarmoured in the human realm, such naivity that bleeds within his heart. A delicious little soul for me to feast on…but we shall wait, but how long can I? Until the time is perfect of course."
The older man laughed as his tentacles twisted into the crystal ball.
💜
"Zoey, come on,"
Zoey smiled as she carefully fixed her hair, looking over at her friends who greeted her. Today was her 22nd birthday, and she wanted to sail across the seas, especially since her father wanted to give her something nice.
"I can't wait to sail these seas," Zoey beamed. "And I get to do with with my friends?"
"I only hope I don't get seasick," Mira mentioned as she boarded the boat.
"I think it's a wonderful idea," Rumi smiled. "But I never heard of a boat party before."
"Oh, I used to do these when I was younger, and one time, we saw a beautiful family of turtles," Zoey explained, looking down at the sea. "I can't wait to see that again.
"You sure love turtles, hmm?"
"Of course I do," Zoey grinned as she looked over at her friends. "But there's so much I want to know…I mean, eh…nevermind."
Zoey looked down at the ocean, watching as the sea moved alongside the ship, as the sun carefully set on the horizon. She closed her eyes as she made a small sunset wish, a hope for the future.
💜
"Do you know how much you embarrassed me out there?" Gwi-Ma growled towards Jeong-hui. "You decided to go wander off somewhere, and I had to announce that the concert was canceled, canceled! Do you see how riduculous it was for me? For all merfolk kind?!"
"I said I was sorry," sighed Jeong-hui. "Honest, I lost track of time, that's all."
Gwi-Ma groaned as he rubbed his temples. "You have completely aggravated me. Jeong-hui, you need to be more understang of those around you. They rely on you.."
"To sink ships, I know," Jeong-hui frowned. "The same old traditions."
"Why must you look down on them, hmm? You know we have done this for years upon years," The King asked, atonished by his son's behavior. "You look down at them, knowing that they deserve it after what have they done to us so many times, even to this day."
"We murder, and they murder, but have you ever seen a human and mermaid get along…?"
"HA! Such a blasphemous thing you speak of," Gwi-Ma laughed hysterically. "We will never get along as I, the king of the seas, shall live!"
Jeong-hui was about to protest, but Gwi-Ma glared down at him.
"I don't need to hear anymore of your shiverling voice, unless it is to sing," Gwi-Ma growled.
Jeong-hui frowned as he swam, letting out a little huff.
"What am I going to do with that boy?"
💜
"Where is he now..?" Jinu sighed as he swam forward.
Jinu raised his eyebrow as he watched Jeong-hui, with the help of Myung, grab his collection before swimming away. Normally, Jinu wouldn't care much about that, but it was simply how secretive they were about it that urged him to follow them.
He watched as they swam deeper into a strange ocean.
It was only when they entered a strange cove that Jinu entered, and what was inside it, shocked him to his core.
It was a cove full of human items, which ranged from the sharp to the strange. It seemed like Jeong-hui had everything, from the paintings to the books.
"Where do you want me to put these?"
Myung stared down at Jeong-hui, who stared at his newly found dinglehopper, a look of displeasure on his face. He rested on the rock before looking up at his younger brother.
"Myung?" Jeong-hui started. "Maybe he's right, there must be something wrong with me?"
"There's nothing wrong with his curisoity, Jeong," Myung comforted. "He's too grumpy to understand."
"But I just can't believe a world that's filled with such wonderous things could be bad.."
💜
Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the guy, the guy who has everything?
Look at this trove, treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Looking around here, you think
"Sure, he's got everything"
I’ve got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
I’ve got who’s-its and what’s-its galore
You want thing-a-mabobs? I’ve got twenty!
But who cares? No big deal, I want more
💜
Jeong-hui carefully took a music box and began twirling it, imagining a beautiful dance between the two lovers. It was clear that he was completely envious of the love that the human world had.
💜
I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see them dancin'
Walking around on those - what do you call 'em? Oh - feet!
Flippin' your fins, you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumping, dancing
Strolling along down a - what's that word again? Street
💜
He swam up, the only light source a small craven, a hole that let light shine from above. It seemed like a glimpse of what Jeong-hui wanted: to go above the sea, to see what goes beyond the suffocating ocean's walls.
💜
Up where they walk, up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin' free - wish I could be
Part of that world
What would I give if I could live out of these waters?
What would I pay to spend a day warm on the sand?
💜
Jeong-hui's face softened as he looked at a portrait of a happy family. It was hard not to think about Gwi-Ma and his incredibly backward views, shaped by old tales and legends, and to use them as excuses for horrid crimes and an attitude.
💜
Bet'cha on land they understand
Bet they don't reprimand their daughters
Bright young women sick of swimmin'
Ready to stand
I'm ready to know what the people know
Ask 'em my questions and get some answers
What's a fire and why does it - what's the word? Burn?
When's it my turn?
Wouldn't I love, love to explore that shore up above?
💜
Jeong-hui let out a breath as he stared at the beam; only his hand cast a form of shadow onto him, reaching something unattainable. It was just that, out of reach and untainable, and just like his hopes, he slowly sank down, taking the dinglehopper back in his hands.
💜
Out of the sea, wish I could be
Part of that world
💜
Jeang-hui sighed as he lay on the sand, when a clash startled both boys into an area where Jinu was covered in old pots and pans, a bucket covering his face.
"Jinu?" Myung chuckled as he took the bucket from his hand. "Did you follow us?"
"With you both being secretive, of course I did," Jinu groaned, with Jeong-hui helping him up. "Thank you. Now, what is this?"
"My collection," Jeong-hui admitted. "When I sank my first ship, I managed to sneak off and search it. And then I saw the most wonderous of things, which sparked my intrest in humans and their stuff. I guess it kinda just snowballed from there, huh?"
"I'll say," Jinu sighed.
"Let's just clean this up," Jeong-hui sighed as he started to pick this up.
But small sounds of booms caught his attention.
As Jeong-hui moved closer, color started to fill the sky, and with a small gust of urge, he swam to the surface, feeling the new cold air. He moved his hair aside to see an actual human ship right in front of him, with small sparks of color showing in the skies.
"What is that….a human ship?" Myung asked. "What should we do?"
"Leave or sink it," Jinu recommended. "You know how- Jeong-hui?!"
Jeong-hui swam over to the ship. He looked at the ropes and began to climb up to a nearby latch, watching in a small area. In amazement, he watched as everyone played flutes and drums, dancing to the music around them.
As he looked over, his eyes met a certain girl, who danced joyfully. Her bright smile and brown eyes made him stop and stare, a lovesick smile on his face.
"Heyo!" Heuimi called out, landing by Jeong-hui. "Watching the humans, huh?"
"They move so wonderfully, and the music, it's so beautiful," Jeong-hui sighed lovingly, tilting his head. "Even she…"
"Oh? Look at you, being in love."
The girl giggled as she sat over at the edge, looking over at the sea. "Look how beautiful the sea is out here."
"Zoey, Zoey, it's time for your present," called Bobby as she turned over.
Everyone came over as he smiled proudly, unraveling his gift to reveal a statue of Princess Zoey herself, but something about it seemed off. It captured everything but her true adventurous soul, only the nature and poise that a princess should have.
"Oh, wow!" Zoey managed before gulping. "Bobby, that looks cool..and uh…"
"Strange?" Rumi awkwardly spoke up, trying to lighten the mood.
"Bad." Mira simply spoke before getting elbowed by Rumi. "I mean, it's not bad. It does look like Zoey."
"You don't need to thank me," Bobby beamed. "I was actually saving it for when you get married, but I thought this would be a grand present for today."
Zoey sighed as he looked over at the ocean again. "I know, and I'm sorry. I know I should be married by now, but you know me. I want something adventous, different, and I want to meet someone who could…ugh, I don't know, but I know he's out there, for me."
"What do you want from a partner?"
Zoey thought for a few moments. "Someone who could share a love of music, maybe? Someone who doesn't think I'm…too much…not that I think I'm too much, just as a percaution, you know!" She fixed her hair before continuing. "Someone who could share the sense of belonging and adventure. Someone I can change the world with, do different things, forget old traditions, and learn new things."
Jeong-hui blushed at her words; his exact words left her mouth. The sense of belonging and to break the old traditions and create anew.
"That sounds just like you, Zoey," Mira teased.
"Hehe, well, you asked." Zoey giggled. "And if I want to feel it, I want it to be…like an instant."
"Instant?"
"Like lightning!"
The girls gasped as lightning struck in the distance, and a rough but elegant voice echoed through the wind. The waves crashed harshly against the ship, and the winds picked up a horrifying pace, causing the sea to enter the ship.
"No way!" A sailor gasped as he gazed over at the sea. "This is some blasted storm! I never saw much like this before!"
"Get the boats ready!" Ordered the captain. "Get the Princesses off the ship, now!"
Jeong-hui was pushed back into the sea as his brothers swam over to him.
"Did you two start this storm?"
"No, but I recognize that voice," Jinu spoke with a hesitant gulp. "That's father's voice."
"But he hasn't sung in years," Jeong-hui gasped, looking around.
As the voice grew stronger, so did the ocean's current. It attacked the ship with a viciousness not unlike that of other parts of the sea, but a new lightning strike caused the ship's wood to crisp and burn, with fire spreading throughout the area.
"I guess he started today," Myung groaned.
The mermen gasped as the wood suddenly sank down to the sea, luckily avoiding them.
Zoey coughed as she had made sure that everyone else was off to the waters below. But as she prepared to jump, coughs behind her made her stop.
It was a horrifying sight to see Bobby coughing a storm as a ship pole caught his leg to the floor.
"Oh my god, Bobby!!" Zoey gasped.
Ignoring the crumbling ship, Zoey rushed and pushed over the pole. She managed to pull the advisor out of his stupor before pushing him down to the ocean.
"Okay," Jinu panted. "I think everything stopped, and now we need to get out of here! Or else we will get hurt!"
Jeong-hui didn't respond as he noticed a human struggling to swim. Without hesitating, he quickly swam back and carefully placed his hands against the human's chest and back, using his tail to glide them across to one of the nearby boats.
The human, he remembered, was named Bobby, and he took a quick sigh of relief, but his eyes widened as he saw the merman who took the time to rescue him.
"H-huh?"
With a soft shh, Jeong-hui pushed Bobby onto the boat, with other passengers quickly carrying up.
"Bobby, where's Zoey!?"
"I don't know-"
An orange glow erupted as the ship finally blew up, leaving shards of fabric, stone, and wood surrounding it. But alas, the princess was not seen, even with the fire and smoke clouding everyone's vision.
"We need to go!"
Jeong-hui held his breath as he decided to swim around, looking around for any sign of the princess, hoping that his father didn't add another victim to his endless sea of them. But a cough caught his attention, leading him towards the near-unconscious Zoey, as she slipped down into the depths below.
Her eyes slowly closed as a beautiful man reached out to her. She coughed again as she leaned against him, a protective arm around her.
As the sun rose from behind him, Jeong-hui set Zoey down on the warm sand of a nearby shore.
"Jeong?! Are you crazy?!" Jinu ridiculed as he swam towards him.
Jeong-hui ignored his brother as he slowly caressed the princess's face, looking down at her.
Heuimi landed mere feet in front of him, shaking her feathers. "What a storm, am I right? Man, my feathers are all over the place, I swear….oh."
"Was I too late?"
"Hm, it's hard to say, but let me see," Heuimi strolled over to the human, pressing her human feet against her head. "Oh…I can't pick up a heartbeat…"
"No, look!" Jeong-hui gasped and smiled. "Shes breathing…she's alive."
"Great, she's alive, that's great, but now can we go?"
Jinu turned to leave, but soft humming filled the air, and a look of horror appeared on his face. It was Jeong-hui, his voice carrying the silent air as he continued to stare down at her.
"You are so beautiful, princess," he whispered towards her.
💜
What would I give
To live where you are?
What would I pay
To stay here beside you?
💜
"No, no, no, this is bad, this is bad," Jinu panicked.
"Why?"
"Because of his voice-"
💜
What would I do to see you
Smiling at me?
💜
Zoey's hand twitched with familiarity as her breathing quickened, feeling the sea-salt air, the cold water between her toes, and a beautiful voice that lured her out of her nap.
💜
Where would we walk?
Where would we run?
If we could stay all day in the sun?
Just you and me
💜
Zoey's eyes slowly opened as one hand held his, and the other, she carefully moved a few strands of hair to reveal purple iridescence eyes, looking down towards her.
💜
If I could be
Part of your world
💜
His voice was beautiful, Zoey thought, but he quickly rushed away as Rumi and Mira rushed to her aid, helping her up.
"Zeoy, are you okay?"
"Yes, yes!" Zoey gasped as she looked back at the ocean. "…He saved me."
"Who's he?"
Zoey carefully moved towards the ocean, watching as the waves drifted slowly.
"He was here," Zoey spoke up. "It was a man, a beautiful man, with a purple eye, that matched his hair and his voice, oh girls, his voice sounded like an angel was sighing!"
"Singing?"
Zoey nodded as she walked closer.
"Come on, Zoey, you must've drank to much seawater," Rumi spoke gently as she wrapped her hands around her friend. "Come on, we need to get you nice and cleaned up."
Zoey looked back at the sea before letting her friends help her back towards the temple.
Jeong-hui watched as she departed, ignoring Jinu's cries of worry and anger. He climbed onto the rock as he watched her walk further and further away, his heart fluttering for the very first time.
