He was convinced that his future had already been planned from the moment he was born. His parents knew what he wanted before he was even old enough to really "say" what he wanted. As time went on though, he eventually just let them do all the talking.
The year before he was scheduled to graduate, Dad came into his room to talk about that planned future. The main word in every sentence was "medical school," something that "they" had all been anticipating for years. When the Dad left the room, the young boy laid in his bed and wondered why his own future included the word "they." It wasn't theirs.....it was his.
A few months before graduation, the boy ran to the kitchen with an envelope in his hand. Jumping for joy, he showed his mother the contents of the acceptance letter, but she merely just shook her head no. That letter did not contain the dream words "medical school" in it. Therefore, it would have to be tossed in the trash, otherwise their future would be ruined. The boy did as he was told. A few weeks later another letter arrived in the mail containing the dream words that Mom and Dad had been looking forward to hearing. As they jumped up and down for joy, they barely noticed that their sons enthusiasm was not at the same level as theirs. "Maybe he's still in shock," they both whispered at night. And they left the matte at that.
Years later these two proud parents waited in a crowded auditorium to see their son walk across the stage and officially become a doctor. The father turned to his wife and said "I couldn't be more proud that he chose to follow in my footsteps. This is everything we have ever wanted!" Finally their sons name was called, and they rushed to the end of the stage so this proud moment could be photographed. And as their son walked down the stairs towards them, both parents beamed with happiness. As the father reached out his hand, he felt the hard paper of the diploma slap against his hand. He looked up at his son and realized he was not smiling. "There's your diploma Dad, hope you like it." And with that, he was gone. They had gotten their idealistic future, but it had also taken their son.
