Evaluation: Major Project.

For my major project, I took a different turn within my work. Chloe and I collaborated together to create a sustainable fashion magazine called Rotate.Magazine. I am passionate about being sustainable in the fashion industry but never took that step into it. I enjoyed my initial project, where I explored challenging locations to do my fashion photoshoots. However, I decided to join Chloe and create a sustainable fashion magazine. I wanted to push myself to do a bigger project. In my initial project, I created a photo book. I felt like the best way to develop into the major project, was to create something bigger yet different. Making a magazine with Chloe, would be something I have not done before as I thought creating a magazine on my own would be very challenging. I believed we could create something very successful for the Major Project and it would have been a great way to end the course.

I wanted to dive into a topic I am passionate about and something that is very popular at the moment. I wanted to collaborate with someone who is also on the same work wavelength and who is really interested in sustainable fashion. We agreed to work together on the Major Project to create something to be proud of. I believed we could be successful and have a massive outcome. Which we did! We had multiple meetings together about what we need to do and when we need it done by. In one meeting, we decided to create and spilt roles for each other. These roles would take place throughout the process of the project. We both believed it would make the process quicker and more efficient. We knew the workload would be immense, therefore splitting these roles would make sure it is fair and it gets done. My main roles were being the social media manager and creating on location images with models, influencers and brands. I felt like I had more experience with these from my previous course and having my own photography business.

As this was a new topic for me, I had to do more research within the topic. I had basic knowledge of sustainable fashion but not enough to help with the magazine. Therefore, at the beginning, I did some intense research into the background of sustainability and its connection with the fashion industry. I researched about the materials, how to be sustainable as a photographer and how to be sustainable in the fashion sector. It was important to increase my knowledge as I was included informative information in the magazine. Chloe had already done this research, therefore we shared with me the sustainable fashion magazines that are already out there. I knew there was not many magazines that were purely based on fashion in sustainability. Therefore, it made the process quicker by Chloe informing me on the names of them. It was useful to look at what people have already created, to see what we could do to make ourselves unique.

I had to research the basics for magazine components too. I have created many Photobooks and been featured in a section of magazines. However, I have not made a magazine before, so I needed to learn what makes a successful magazine. My research and creation of inspiring mood-boards helped me learn what was successful and what was not.

Afterwards, we began by researching into a new name for the magazine. We felt it was important not to use the name Revival as that was Chloe’s hard work from her previous project. I did not want to take any credit away from her. As it was something new with another creator, we believed it was important to come up with a new name. After a long session of researching names that was not already taken, we came up with the name, Rotate.Magazine. The concept behind the name, links to rotating. Whether this is rotating bought clothes or reusing items to gain more life out of them. The word defines and connects with sustainability. It also links with the aim of the magazine, which is to rotate the magazine around. By reducing the prints copies and ‘rotating’ the magazine, helps benefit the environment.

We then went on creating an Instagram page for the magazine. I thought it was a great way to start getting the name out there to the public. It is a good way to promote the magazine and start creating Rotates own audience. We began following accounts that were sustainable related, whether these were influencers, brands or shops in Bristol and Weston. We decided to buy a domain name straight away as we did not want it to get taken. It could have been taken by someone who would have seen the increased interest of the magazine. We did not want to take that risk.

We both starting planning and arranging photoshoots. We had an aim to get them done within the first and second month of starting. We wanted to collaborate with as many businesses and influencers as possible. This could bring possible opportunities for the future of both our businesses. I had many contacts already from my business; therefore, we had a great place to start looking. I was the one who contacted all the models and brands/stores as I felt I had more skills of doing so. Chloe said she was not very confident with contacting new people. I did not mind taking on this role as I love working with new clients. By being involved with new people, I hope that Chloe will have gained the confidence to do so. I believe she has done well with this; she contacted the fashion department which gave us a new insight to sustainable fashion, from a student’s perspective.

When we started making the magazine, we were already in lockdown. We were both fortunate that we got our photoshoots done before we were put into lockdown. However, there was one photoshoot which I had to cancel due to social isolation. Chloe saw a post on Twitter about a photographer doing a photoshoot through Facetime. This was a great idea and solved our problem! I spoke to the model and she was more than happy to do this idea. She said it was so creative and a great way to reflect what is happening in the work. The photoshoot was very successful and had some context behind it.

I believe we adapted very well to the Corona Virus related issues. We were unable to meet each other and do the work together. However, we adapted to the situation and made the entire magazine over Teams. Chloe figured out how to screen share, therefore we were able to work on the magazine together. I would help Chloe direct the layout and look of the magazine whilst Chloe would create it. I shared some inspired magazines designs through Pinterest, this helped Chloe understand exactly what I meant. I am very grateful for Chloe knowing how to use Adobe InDesign as I have no experience at all. I think we both played to our strengths and taught each other new skills too. I could have helped more if we were not in lockdown, but I did my best to what I could, with the resources I had available.

Due to the current situation, we wanted the magazine to be both digital and have physical copies too. We still felt it was important to use the funding on printing physical copies of the magazine. We wanted to have an end product and share it around. We made the website accessible online through the website and Chloe added a QR code on the physical magazine, which links to the website too. We both looked around different printing websites to see which was the best quality at a cheaper rate. Also, a main factor would be that the paper was recycled or somewhat sustainable. We wanted to be as ethical as we could when printing the magazine. Hence, we only printed 100 copies. Less copies meant less damage to the environment. We could not print it ourselves due to lockdown, therefore we decided to use Mixam to print copies. We were very pleased with the quality of the recycled paper; it was very thick and there was not any visible ink from the other side. However, we added spine detail that we would have wanted but Mixam had an error and did not add it. It does not matter majorly to us; some people may not even notice the spine. Overall, we are both very happy with the end result. The magazine is of a good quality and has nothing wrong with it!

Due to the COVID-19, we were not able to take part in any exhibition or have a launch night for our magazine. We used social media to carry on with the launch, which went well! Social media is a great way to get something out there, so many people can view it. We were lucky we could launch the magazine online, so that we could get it to the public and gain feedback.

After lockdown, the plan is to distribute the magazines to lots of locations. I plan to distribute mine to many fashion shops across Bristol. There is many vintage, sustainable and charity stores with Bristol. I know there is many up Park Street and a few places in Clifton. The aim is to put them in the stores I have contacted or know that are open in Bristol. This will be a great way to show the magazine to the public. Bristol is a very busy area and lots of people will be able to come across our magazine. Of course, we will do this after lock down and when all the stores are open back up. It has been a pain as we will have to wait for the magazine to be seen by majority of people. However, it will happen, so we have to just be patient. I am looking forward to getting the magazines out further to the public, since we have had an amazing response so far.

After the launch, we were so stunned with the response we had. So many people were liking and giving our account a shoutout on their stories, to promote us. The overall feedback was very positive! People were amazed how well we did during the current situation. People loved the look of the magazine. I was very pleased to see that many people picked up on the FaceTime Photoshoot as their favourite! I believe they were interested in this photoshoot as it connected with what is currently happening. It was nice to give the public something to read whilst they are at home. We hope to do our bit and make someone’s day. We hope to be inspiring to others and prove you can get things done whilst in lockdown. We hope for this magazine to inspire others to be conscious when making fashion decisions. Even general day to day life decisions too!

From this project, we have gained further opportunities. There has been so much positive feedback and we have even been contacted by more businesses, that want to collaborate in the next issue of the magazine. This opens up the idea of carrying on the magazine. This is an idea I willing to do, guaranteed I have the time to do so. It is an option to carry on in both our spare times. It is something we will discuss in the future when we are both sorted with our jobs. Of course, we would say yes now but we are unsure until we know what it is like to have full time jobs. I have enjoyed working with Chloe, we have worked well together to create an amazing project. We have benefited so much from working together. It is sad that it has come to an end, but we may do another issue in the future. Overall, I am very happy with our outcome. I am very proud of us both achieving something so big!

Model Release Forms

Myself and Chloe have both done model release forms for each of our models. I told Chloe to use the RPS Model Release Form as they were simple and easy to use. Also they had to correct information to include. I learned to use these forms from my previous course, I always make sure I use hem to protect myself and the model too.

Due to the personal data, I am not showing them on here. I have a PDF file with all the forms together. I will send this through when I had in my work. This way the models and photographers data is kept safe and private.

Feedback of Magazine & Opportunities.

Below is all the feedback we have had from the magazine. So many people have looked at our magazine and followed our Instagram account. We now have 153 followers and counting! The magazine launch has defiantly helped our following grow. Many people have shared our account through their instagram stories, this is called a shoutout. I have had all the models contact me once they received their copies of the magazine. They all were so hoary and excited to be featured in a magazine. Some shared on their stories and some even did a whole post about it! This is amazing as the models have a great following so thousands of people will see it. I enjoy going through all the comments that have been left about the magazine.

Opinion: The rotate magazine is amazing! I love the idea of signing it and passing it onto somebody else and it looks very fashionable. The detail of each interview is really good and covers everything you’d want to know. Each page sticks out and makes you want to read it all. Very good magazine and I’m glad I have my own copy! 😊😊😊xxx

Improvements: Not really maybe you guys could have put a photo of yourselves at the end next to your logos maybe so people could see the creators behind this magazine.

I agree with my sister on that we should of added a photo of ourselves in it. I believe it would have been a great way to show the viewer who wrote this magazine and be able to connect better. However Chloe did not have an image that she would have wanted to use. Therefore I suggested to just use our brand logo for our businesses instead.

Evaluation: Public Presentation

For this project, I worked on the online presence for Rotate Magazine and my own photography business. With Rotate Magazine, I had to to start from the beginning with using social media. I had to create a new account for the magazine. I started to create my own audience by following accounts that I thought would be interested in our magazine. These accounts were sustainable fashion influencers, vintage and second hand stores all across Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare. The more I followed and liked the images on those accounts, the more they followed and we had a audience. This helped carve the audience we are targeting at. We can not control who is our audience to a certain extent, however we can influence and specialise what information we share to the public to gain a specific audience.

I think our magazine will inspire many people as there is not many sustainable fashion magazines out there. Rotate.Magazine is unique. We have put two major subjects together, fashion and sustainability. These will appeal to a huge audience as the sustainable factor is a relatable issue that is going on in the world. We have created a successful Instagram page, which has reached 153 followers and counting. I believe this will expand as soon as the physical copies of the magazines get rotated around Bristol and its surrounding areas.

Having the magazine available online, has made the process more ethical. We have reduced the printing copies to support this. Because of the Corona Virus, our public presentation plans were affected the most. There is no social gatherings or stores available to share our work. Therefore the plan to have a launch night and exhibition for the magazine, was unable to go ahead. However that did not stop us launching. I believe that we have done really well to get the magazine launched on time and got out there to the public. We were lucky to have the option of posting the magazines out to share it with the public.

After lockdown, the plan is to distribute the magazines to lots of locations. I plan to distribute mine to many fashion shops across Bristol. There is many vintage, sustainable and charity stores with Bristol. I know there is many up Park Street and a few places in Clifton. The aim is to put them in the stores I have contacted or know that are open in Bristol. This will be a great way to show the magazine to the public. Bristol is a very busy area and lots of people will be able to come across our magazine. Of course we will do this after lock down and when all the stores are open back up. It has been a pain as we will have to wait for the magazine to be seen by majority of people. However it will happen so we have to just be patient. I am looking forward to getting the magazines out further to the public, since we have had an amazing response so far.

The launch went really well. We both did the website and Instagram posts on time together. Our responses were very good, many people gave us a shoutout over social media to promote it more! We were pleased to get some new businesses we have not heard of, wanting to get involved in the next issue of Rotate.Magazine. This is rewarding but we are unsure whether we are carrying on the magazine together. I think we both adapted really well to the situation and did not let it stop us from launching the magazine. People know it will be coming in stores, they just have to wait until it is safe to be near each other again.

I believe social media has been the key element to get our Magazine out there to the public. The online version allows anyone to read Rotate.Magazine. Having a physical copy is not the same but we will get them out there when it is safe too. We hope this will bring more interest once the copies are spread around. I believe we will reach our targeted audience by the particular shops and stores, we put the magazines in.

As for my business, it is slowly expanding. I have updated my portfolio which is available through a pdf file. I hope to print a book of the portfolio in the future, however I believe my work will be constantly updated with new stronger work. Therefore a printed version may not be useful if it is being changed often. I will continue to update my social media to influence and attract my audience. My audience is already there, I just need to expand and attract more people. I will continue to share my online portfolio to fashion brands and stores. I will aim to gain work in the fashion industry. I believe having a updated website will help my business look more professional. It is a great way to share my work as I am showing the range of work I can do. My website shows the main types of photography I do, not just fashion work. I believe showing your best work to the public, can boost your paid jobs and opportunities.

I know and understand what I need to do to boost my business social media. I need to be more active.I believe I can increase my following by engaging with my audience and other accounts. I can do this by commenting, liking and giving shoutouts to accounts to increase my exposure. This all will be done over time, I have decided not to blog this as I have done this before and successfully. It is a matter of updating and adding more images. I will bring my full attention to my business now uni is coming to an end. I felt like my Uni work was more important at the time.

Website for Rotate.Magazine

The website we purchased, was used for a page where you can download a copy of the Rotate.Magazine. You can access the website by simply searching www.rotatemagazine.co.uk or the physical copy of the magazine has a QR code. This code leads straight to the website. Before the launch, the website was ready but did not put it live. We did not want people to see it before the launch.

On the 1st of May. we launched the magazine, therefore launched the website. The website shows the front cover of the magazine, with a download button. This allows you to view the magazine and download a PDF file too.

This is the main way of seeing the magazine at the moment. We tested the QR code and website before the launch. By doing so, eliminates any problems we have on the launch day. Having our own website with the magazine available allows the public to view our work.

RPS & Artspace Instagram Takeovers.

Takeover 1: Royal Photographic Society, Bristol.

The Royal Photography Society is a International Organisation committed to promoting photography and supporting photographers. RPS is based in Bristol. Their aim is to increase the knowledge and understanding of photography. They promote the highest standards of achievement in photography. They have 11,000 members and a 35.5k following on Instagram.

I am a member of the RPS and have visited the Gallery lots of times for their exhibitions. Myself and Chloe had a Instagram takeover on their account. We sent 5 images each so that it would be spilt to be fair between us. Chloe and I wrote a bio about the magazine and ourselves.

I shared our Instagram hashtags so that the images they shared, would be under them and our own #rotagemag too. We got 231 likes! We got two comments saying it is a cool idea and good luck. I believe this is a great response. I have never had much more than 120 likes on my Instagram so 231 is amazing.

By the RPS, sharing our images and tagging our Instagram account, gives us lots of exposure to their audience. It also looks good that a well known big organisation is promoting our magazine. They are giving us support.

This takeover is a great way to present our work to the public. It gives exposure to Rotate Magazine, my business and Chloe’s photography account.

Take over 2 : Artspace Weston-Super-Mare

I got offered to do another Instagram takeover. I sent the same bio that is in my website. I sent 9 images of a range of my images. I am waiting for them to share my work, however they have only just finished the first years. My work will not be shown until after the hand in. It is still great to get my work shared still.

Portfolio Update 1 & 2:

I believe a great way to show your work to clients or companies, is by creating a portfolio. The copy below is an online pdf. When I create a pdf, I use a word document and lay out my images. I like to put the images in a particular order, so that they look good and work well together. After I have created the portfolio and am happy with the layout. I export the word document into a pdf file. This just compresses the file and makes It easier to view the document too. It looks like it is viewed as a book. I use the pdf file to send to potential clients who I want to work with. I think it is a good way to present your work as all your best images are In one document. The portfolio shown below has been printed professional from an online website called Snapfish. I like to have a physical copy too as it Is nice to look through when I have an interview or when I am showing my work.

I will continue to create portfolios as I enjoy doing so and believe they look professional.

I wanted to create a magazine/ lookbook as my portfolio. I feel like my style of images work well with the overview look of the portfolio. If I had more of a budget (money) , I would like to create a high quality book from Blurb or Papier etc. These are professional high standard which look and are expensive.

However Snapfish was good quality for the price. The book should of been £20 or so but luckily I managed to get a discount code for the total being just under £16. Including delivery. I wanted the book to have same photo layout throughout. This makes it consistent and easy to follow. The front cover has my business logo shown. I feel like I did not want to limit myself to just show one image and hint that it is more important than the others. Also my logo is my identity too so I think it looks more professional, The white space work well with the logo too.

Inside, there is text of my name and instagram handle too. This is my main social media platform. I made sure I had my font and font colour matching my logo. I did this by picking a dominant colour of my logo.

The main aim in my portfolio is for the images that are together to be matching. Either by the colour tones, patterns or colour scheme. This can be done by a colour repeating itself through both images. Can be a small part of that colour but it’s important to link the images together on a double page spread.

Or matching a suggestion of the same movement shown, same position… Linked by direction of pose or direction of other objects apparent. It is important to have the images benefiting each other, they need to work together as a pair. I also tried to have particular images to help with the flow of the book. For example, a model walking towards the end of the page, hint to turn the page.

I decided to go through my portfolio and replace a lot of the images as I have improved so much more than having old images which will not do a-lot. I had an idea of including older work which is strong and will always be included. My family work is strong but it will not be included as that does not represent who I am as a photographer.

I updated this portfolio first but then I realised I missed some images from my initial project. I wanted to include them as they are recent and have a different model to vary the work shown. Most of the images are the same as before but I have just updated some images to recent work. Shown below.

I was happy with this one but I think I could add more work and new models that isn't there. I felt like there was multiple images of the same model which does not look great when your showing a range of work. Once I add a few more different images, this will improve the range even more.

Therefore I updated the portfolio for the last time! Shown after the one below.

Updated Portfolio 2: Final One

This is the final portfolio. It is slightly different from the one above. I added in images from the Initial Project and Major Project. All these images I have chose are my favourites and images I feel are strong. I have a connection with the images, therefore I believe someone else will. I think the images show my style and personality too. There is a range of work from previous projects. I have tried to make the two images on the page match in some way. I believe using the colours to match, make the layout seem more aesthetically pleasing.

I will mention about one of the images being a male model. I do shoot with males but not often at all. I do not mind shooting with them but my clients and models I usually shoot with are female. I was thinking of removing the male image as I shoot women mainly. However I think the image is very good with how the angle looks and I did not want to remove it. I think the image opposite works well with the other, as the angles and colours match well. I decided to keep the male image in as it shows that I am willing to work with both males and females. I wanted to address this as I knew it would be brought up.

Overall, I am very happy with the look of my portfolio as it shows a range of work with a variety of locations and models. I have included all of the up to date work that I want to show. I believe it is important to keep you portfolio updated as you do not want to show work that no longer represents you. I always add a credit page at the back as it is important to me, to credit the model or brand where possible. This shows my professionalism as a photographer. Of course, I had to update the credit page too as layouts changed and they may of changed their Instagram account too.

IN THE FUTURE.... I will continue to update and change my portfolio when I feel it is necessary. I may create one for the other styles of photography I shoot. Fro example, child photography/model headshots. This is an option I am considering but it is shown on my website.

End of the Year: My Plans & Backup Plans.

Currently I have my own photography business, however I would to grow my business further. I want to increase my follower count to get more exposure. I can do this by focusing on engagement, by liking and commenting on other peoples profile. The more you comment or like other peoples images, the more chance of getting exposed by a new following. I will start posting more images little and often to keep the followers entertained and to bring more followers in. I believe this will work as I have done this in the past to get the followers I have now.

After I graduate, I will update my CV and add this qualification to it. I will start to look for full time jobs immediately. I have a job at the moment but it is not in the subject field I would like. I will apply to as many jobs as I can to increase my chances of getting an interview. Ideally, I would like to be a freelancer and do my own social media content work. Also model headshots too (child photoshoot). The photography market is very competitive so I do not think I would earn enough money to live on by working as a freelancer. I believe once I work on my business and make it grown, then in the future I will go as freelance. In the mean time, I will apply for a job in the photography or social media management sector. I can always do my usual photography clients on the side. I will always be doing my fashion clients and monthly model headshots. I am unsure on what type of job yet. I would love to work with a fashion brand or company to photograph their products. Collaborations is something I've always done but it has not been paid as such. It has been for trade for trade purposes. I would be interested in managing a brands social media content or creating the images that would be featured on there or their website.

The dream job would be working for high end fashion brands on fashion shows and work trips abroad. For example, Boohoo or New Look or even more luxury brands if I am lucky. I will aim to photograph a fashion show as I know it can be possible if I work hard and contact the right people. I was the second choice to be a photographer for the Miami Fashion Week last year. I was very close to getting chosen for this but I was too similar to the other photographer that got it. I will aim to photography the Bristol Fashion week as it is local and a good place to start. I know I need to reach out to more people and stay consistent to get attention. Also this shows I am dedicated.

I believe I have the skills to get the job I desire, I just need to develop them further and contact bigger brands. It only takes one person to see my work and start me off. I have planned to contact fashion brands to work with. I have researched PR emails of the brands so I can contact them. I will send an email asking for collaboration and include my Online Portfolio. This is a pdf form where they can view it online. I will contact as many brands as I can, even if they say no, they have my portfolio to see or keep me in mind for the future.

I know many models and have lots of contacts to help me get to where I want to be. For example, if a brand wants to work with me and they want me to arrange the photoshoot and the model, I can do this. I have experience working with brands and I know many models that would work with me on these projects. I know how to contact new models to work with. I aim to keep updating my contact list as I found it very useful to keep them all in one place. I might forget a model and they could be perfect for the brief/job. I enjoy working with new people and making new friends out of it. There is lots of models which I have met and have become friends over it. They enjoy photographing with me and having a bit of fun!

With the magazine, it was just for the major project. However depending on the outcome and feedback, it would be nice to carry on other editions. Chloe may not have the time to do this or myself. We will have to see what happens. We may get contacted and get paid to carry on the magazine. We just do not know. I loved making the magazine and having it, is a rewarding result. I would happily do another edition with Chloe on the side whilst working elsewhere. I would do this in my free time as I will miss having a project to do. I intend to keep in touch with Chloe and we may carry it on, or we will leave it there.

I will carry on entering competitions as I feel this is a great way to get yourself out there. You're not loosing anything by entering and I know it is possible as I have won the Weston Uni Photography Competition in 2019. I have decided that I will not go for a job that is unpaid, I believe I have the qualifications to get a good job. I have had lots of experience and need to get paid for my work. I have paid clients so it would not be right to not have an unpaid full time job.

Overall, I would love to work in the fashion industry and creating social media content for Instagram etc. I am in the progress of growing clients and will continue to keep sharing my work out to the public.

Distributing Magazine

After lockdown, we will distribute the magazines to lots of locations. I plan to distribute mine to many fashion shops across Bristol. There is many vintage, sustainable and charity stores with Bristol. I know there is many up Park Street and a few places in Clifton. The aim is to put them in the stores I have contacted or know that are open in Bristol. This will be a great way to show the magazine to the public. Bristol is a very busy area and lots of people will be able to come across our magazine. Of course we will do this after lock down and when all the stores are open back up. It has been a pain as we will have to wait for the magazine to be seen by majority of people. However it will happen so we have to just be patient.

As we are still in lockdown during the launch of the magazine, we decided we will be posting a physical copy of the magazine, to all the models ,brands and people involved in creating the magazine. This is our way of saying thank you and to start distributing the magazine. We both had a little bit of money left from the funding, so we used the money to post the magazines to people. Ideally, I would have gave the copies to them but we can not leave the house due to lockdown of the Corona Virus.

After some research through the Royal Mail website, I worked out that the magazine would be classed as a large letter, not a parcel. I worked this out by looking at the dimensions and weight of the magazine in a A4 big envelope. The envelopes I used were recyclable envelopes to follow with the sustainable movement.

Below is a tool that my work use to determine where it is a letter or a large letter. I took an image to help me choose whether our magazine would fit through the options. It fitted perfectly through the large letterboxing. The magazine was a lot smaller in thickness than the slot shown.

I sent them all first class to each person. There was one in Ireland so it did cost more to ship to her address. This was fine as the pricing was not too bad. However it did take a few days longer as it was further to travel. I sent them off on the day of the launch and they arrived within two days of posting. It cost around £14 to post all the magazines off. I even did a few extra for family members to read too! However the cost was separately. We are still sticking to our social distancing by posting them. We are coming into no contact with other people.

I decided to put a small hand written note in with the magazine. This adds a little personal touch to it. I wrote this:

Printing Magazine

We wanted there to be printed versions that was accessible to the public but at a limited number of copies. We reduced the amount of copies as we wanted to keep the printing and paper usage as sustainable as we can. The concept is to have the magazine passed around like a chain of viewers. People can sign their sign their name in the magazine and then pass it on. They can also document them using the magazine through our hashtag #rotatemag. This hashtag will be used only on Instagram.

We were able to get the funding for the magazine, therefore we could afford to get the magazines printed in recycled paper. We decided on using Mixam to print as they were the best priced and also had the option to print on recycled paper. We were on Screen-share on Teams together whilst ordering the magazines. We uploaded the finalised PDF file to the Mixam magazine software. We made sure that everything was in the right place, nothing was cut off or blurry. There was a few problems with the quality of the images, so I got Chloe to up her DPI to 300, this allows the pixels to increase for printing size. She had 72 dpi which is only ideal for online view, for example a website.

We applied all the correct printing specifications. This is:

The total of the printing without shipping is £440.50. However when you add shipping costs on, it came to £453.21. It took just over a week to come and came on the date it said it would. Below shows the screenshots taken when printing the magazine.

Social Media Launch & Dates.

Myself and Chloe had a chat on teams video call. I made a timeline of dates for the Major Project Launch on social media. We had a week before the launch date. The plan was to keep posting sets of images of each others, so that it looked even on the overall look of the feed. On the 25th of April, I announced on social media the the launch date was. I did this through instagram stories and a set of three images. These images combined together to read ‘launching 01/05′, the date of the launch. Throughout the time between then and the launch, I was constantly using social media to increase the engagement. This means commenting and liking other peoples images. I kept commenting on accounts that I thought would be interested. I said something like ‘Rotate.magazine is launching the 1st of May, keep your eyes peeled!’. I believe the more you comment and like, the more people notice you and will look on your profile.

Throughout this time, I was trying my best to boost our followers to get 100 followers. As if I reached 100, we would be able to get Instagram insights to our profile. This means we can see what type of audience we have and where from. I asked my partner to share the account and ask his friends to follow the account. They did and we gained enough for the statistics!

During the run up to the launch, I posted three images to show three days left till launch day. Each image had one of our images with a number over the top. This showed how many days left until we launched. This is shown below in the images.

On launch day, I posted the three images a row, saying ‘out now’ with the image of the front cover in the middle. This clearly shows we are now launched and available for the public to see! I made lots of stories to get it out there, that we are launched!

Myself and Chloe put a post out on our personal accounts to share the magazine launch too. It was very exciting morning!

UCW Promoting Rotate. Magazine:

Chloe contacted the UCW team to see if they could promote our Rotate Magazine Launch. Below shows what Chloe sent to the team. Also there is images of UCW team sharing about the up coming launch and when we have launched. By them sharing our work, gave us a wider audience for the magazine to be seen. UCW did a good job of promoting our launch through they social media pages. Both on Instagram and Facebook pages. This way it can inspire more students and let more teachers see what we have made. They included all the information and hashtags we wanted.

Creating Website & QR Code.

Chloe created the website for us. She knew how to create a QR code and connect it to the website. The website domain was in Chloe’s name, therefore she had to create it. We wanted to show a banner page, just displaying the front cover of the magazine and a button to download it. Once you click on the ‘download now’ button, it takes you to what is shown in the second screenshot. You can view the magazine and then if you click on the arrow button in the top right corner, it will download a pdf file. This is a great way to share our magazine to the public.

Making of Magazine

Myself and Chloe decided the best way to make the magazine together, was by screen sharing on teams. We had lots of sessions where we would go through each section of the magazine and work on it together. It was easier to talk to each other and see what Chloe was doing. It was annoying as I could not show her what I mean but I had to describe what I thought. We worked well as a team to get it done quick. Each session would be around 2-4 hours depending on how we felt that day. Within each session we got many pages done. We planned before hand with the layout so we did not waste anytime. We had all the information and images, we just needed to put it all together. We managed to finish the magazine within 4 long sessions. Chloe used Indesign which is an adobe software.

Of course Chloe carried on in the background changing little things and the finishing touches. I am glad Chloe knew the software as it would be difficult for me to learn. I tried my best to get everything ready so that all she had to put was put it together. We found screen sharing really helped us as we was able to do it together. It would have been the same if we worked in the uni class room, as I am just watching Chloe create it.

Whilst making the magazine, we realised we did not want the all the pages text heavy. Therefore I came up with the idea of having filler pages of images. This gives the viewer time to breath and not have lots of text. One way creating filler pages is by using other photographers work. This is a great way to promote other photographers and support the community. Chloe knew a photographer who has done her photography work on sustainability. These images were by Lily Hedge. She made the plastic animals herself, this expressed the problems of plastic pollution, we are facing. She made the animals out of litter. We thought they would be perfect for the magazine. Of course, we gave her credit by showing her Instagram handle and her logo at the back of the book.

We were experimenting with lots of different options for the front cover of the magazine. We came to a final decision of these two. We thought the second image had more to say and showed the fashion element. Whereas the first would of been difficult to depict what it is and why we chose that. Also the first image only has a small section it being in focus so it may not look right to the viewer and printing quality.

Funding Update:

After the Presentation:

Myself and Chloe practiced the presentation in a class room. We decided to take turn in saying certain slides and chunks of text. That way it would be fair that we both would be speaking the same amount of time. We went through the presentation a few times before we had the meeting. About 15 minutes before, Sam got an email saying that she was unable to come that morning but could come in the late afternoon. We had an issue as I had a photoshoot in Bristol in the afternoon, for the magazine. I couldn’t cancel the photoshoot as it was too late and I had to make the most of the weather. I felt awful for not being there but I needed to take time to travel and do the photoshoot. Chloe was very brave and did the presentation by herself. She was amazing and did it! I really appreciated Chloe taking this on by herself. We did not wanted to delay the meeting as we needed the money asap to start planning how we would print the magazine.

Chloe said it went well and they asked a few questions. We waited for a response for about a week. We got a conference call from Ross and Jamie saying that it has been accepted to get funded. However they would only give us £600 out of the £1,000. This means that I would get £300 and Chloe would get the other £300. Of course we wanted the full amount but due to the circumstances with corona, that was a perfect amount. We were unable to do a launch night or a exhibition , therefore the £600 was the right amount the get the copies of the magazine printed. We did not need the rest of the money as our plans were canceled due to the Corona Situation. The focus was getting the magazine printed. By having the money to print, means we can save time as we would of had to make the magazine ourself. Also companies and any models that were involved now can have a copy of the magazine.

Myself and Chloe were very happy to have received the funding as it opened so much more possibilities we could not afford to do before.
