THE VAMPIRE LESTAT 03.07 | "The Failures"
repeat after me: just because media challenges your expectations doesn't mean its bad. Just because you have to think about text and subtext to understand it doesn't mean its bad. Just because a piece of art makes sense in the allegorical realm doesn't mean its bad. Just because art demands your participation in the creation of meaning doesn't mean its bad. Just because there are different layers of meaning that could be simultaneously true doesn't mean its bad. It's okay if you feel uncomfortable and unsettled. That's the point of serious art.
And I can't believe I'm saying this about the fucking gay vampire show
I really do think that the beheadings were primarily intended to stop the Great Conversion. I also recently realized I was operating under the assumption from the very beginning that the plan was never to kill either Louis or Lestat, merely to incapacitate them long enough and definitively enough to miss the concert (apparently this was not a common assumption in the fandom). Why? They had Fareed for one, who āper earlier in the season when discussing the Budapest experiments and estimating that Louis could survive about 2 hours post decapitation and that Lestat could theoretically survive 8-10 hoursā already knew that death did not occur immediately at the point of decapitation (as did Louis, who seemed already aware of that fact when he went on his own beheading spree in talking to decapitated heads, which makes me believe some amount of continued life after beheading was decently common knowledge).
As such, I also think that Armand, worn down more than a little bit by the emotional upheaval of the last years and especially by the last weeks (Iām looking at you, āBig Bossā), saw the opportunity for what it was and cracked. I hear what Assad said that Armand wouldnāt have gone through with it, and indeed he didnāt go through with it. He had Fareed there to monitor Louis and sew him back together. If the point was to torture Louis until he died, he could have approximated how much time Louis had left for the purpose of his own torture plans just by observing him.
Furthermore, I think this hypothesis is evidenced by the fact that Fareed did not look to be there all that willingly or happily (and further evidenced by Fareedās obvious discomfort during that shoulder massage scene and his general tense affect). If Fareed were there just to monitor for the purpose of research, we wouldāve seen him with the same sort of disengaged, stony-faced affect weāve seen him with previously in Dubai and on the tour bus. But he was not happy, he was uncomfortable. When Armand asks towards the end how Louis is doing, he says āterribleā. If he were willingly there to āresearchā a subject post-beheading to the point of death, he wouldnāt have cared. He mightāve said, ādecliningā or something similar. But he did care and grew more visibly anxious the closer Louis got to death, making me think Louis was never supposed to die. The more Fareed believed he might, the more uncomfortable with the situation he became.
Similarly, because Lestat was estimated to have the capacity to survive 8-10 hours post-decapitation, I wonder if the plan really was to let Lestat die or if putting Lestatās head in a bag and walking off with it served as a pressure point for Louis and a bit of catharsis for Daniel. They had 8-10 hours, it was a fairly safe move given that Louis would only have about 2. The Talamasca then interfered before we could properly answer the question or explore it further.
So no, I donāt think this was inherently OOC or diverging from the established plot. I just think that Armand and Daniel had a plan, saw the opportunity for a side quest, took it, and were then interrupted.
people out there are busy trying to rate tvl down, meanwhile I'm at the edge of my seat, gripping my chair, whispering the names of Marguerite Doree, Jean Bodine, Marthe Roulet and Aimee Roulet
I give Louis a pass bc being detached from your body fucks with your sense of whimsy but concluding his monologue with "And that was my full and heartfelt Loupollogy" would have been the right move
In my country, when we're sat at the long table we don't say "Where did my gothic show go?" or "I will meet the writers with a gun in my hand"; we say "THANK YOU FOR THE MEAL MAY WE HAVE SOME MORE TASTY COURSES WITH A SIDE OF DREAD PLEASE MMM"
Why are people insane? Why are they threatening to shoot writers at a convention bc they didn't like the show they created? Why can't I enjoy gay vampires with other people who enjoy gay vampires without "ROLIN JONES MUST DIE" popping up?
The inability to draw a line between fiction and reality is Black Mirror level of scary. The laughable delusion that all of them are saviors on white horses who needs to save Jacob and Delaney and Sam from the clutch of the evil show that's holding them captive feels like watching the beginning of a Netflix murder doc.
I'm on my knees and I'm begging you to touch grass, see the sun, seek therapy. Put the gun down.
and if you dislike a creator's work, find another that's more to your liking instead of jumping to the conclusion that writers not catering to your personal taste is a war crime that merits execution.
iwtv tags absolutely hysterical rn, bunch of morons who've spent the past 2 seasons, and now also season 3, misinterpreting 90% of the show and telling each other "exactlyyy!!1!!!1!" mad that nothing they wanted/expected to happen happened
"this season/the finale had no point" nah you just missed all of the points because you're so hyper-focused on your delusions about this show
s3 was about lestat finally dealing with and being able to move past a huge chunk of the trauma and coping mechanisms he's been trying to ignore for most of his life, that's been obvious to all of us who love the show and actually listen to what it's trying to communicate
sorry so many of you are too blinded by your preconceived biased notions to understand any of it
couldn't be me š
Fr fr fr, those who are disappointed right now are divided into several groups of people who
-spent waaaay too much time with their headcannons and convinced themselves that's the show
-don't care about bi representation and to them queer rep only exists within the realm of sexual acts, so if there's no dick in hole, the question "Ugh what happened to my queer show?" immediately pops up
-wanted the season titled The vampire Lestat to have....less Lestat? LessTat? Sorry, I love everybody and I want everyone to have plenty of screen time but pls look at the name of the show.
-and then it's people who don't get how you can enjoy an antagonist - I'll tell you all right now, it's very possible if you can separate fiction from real life, something that's apparently a massive Sisyphean struggle for many out there. It's a show about vampires. EVERY single character in there has transgressions that would be unforgivable irl; this, however, is not real life, it's a magical world where evil can be layered and interesting, and interesting is all a character needs to be to merit engagement.
Armand trying to prevent something for once and everyone hates him for it
genuinely open to disagreement but delaineyās pained delivery of ābleak⦠black lifeā felt like the anti-black insults she was hurling at louis were intentionally loaded with her own grief. especially with her comments that claudias jealous that louis gets to wallow and love and live.
louis gets to be black and desired, cherished and wanted with his whole personhood. louis gets to fuck up, be fucked up, forgive and be forgiven; he gets to be black and a whole person. claudia is disabled into helplessness by her little girl body that seems to keep signalling people to treat her like a boxed doll. its not a coincidence that she gets louis to plot against lestat by telling him heās a kept thing, telling him he is all the things she experiences. the anger in her voice when she calls louis a slave, it feels situated against the incessant inertia she was always running on because she had no other choice.
in nola, its claudia micromanaging with an eye and ear on everyone. she nurses louis after the drop, she maintains the thread of their plotting. in europe, its claudia learning the languages, claudia keeping up the story, claudia maintaining hypervigillance. she notices the bombs about to blow while louisā being woeful and hallucinating lestat. louis gets to be lost in lestats eyes; louis gets to dance with humans in romania; louis gets to run around paris āout on the streetsā while shrugging off armands warnings. louis gets to be careless, gets to be oblivious, gets to drown in his pain and still be protected and unconditionally loved. what louis couldnt even give her
the blackness claudia navigates her life with is so radically different from louisā that it makes a lot of sense that she so ardently hates his
a watercolor redraw of Amber that I did as a commission
Do you ever watch a show and think "Wow, isn't it great how we have these layered and morally grey characters that switch between protagonists and antagonists, each one of them is a precious pearl and they're all VITAL to my enjoyment, and the story is such an overall mixture of over the top glitter camp and gothic romance and a study of trauma, and isnt it great how the writers consult the actors and everyone is getting along really well? Aren't we all so lucky? Better go online and share this emotion with my compatriots in admiration ššš" and then you open any app and it's a bunch of people yelling KYS at each other from the top of their respective hills
are you telling me.....lestat went to a store, and didn't just buy candy for trick or treaters, he bought one of those plastic imitation cauldrons to PUT the candy in. i'm unwell.
UPDATE. are you telling me.....lestat left a NOTE on his DOOR so trick or treaters know he's not home and he left them candy!!?? AND he decorated his porch with a skeleton??? AND he dressed up in costume for an event that clearly no other adults are dressing up for cause he just loves halloween?? lestat is never beating the precious bitch allegations, i fear his whimsy can not be contained. i'm unwell.
Loustat is compelling because they constantly push each other to the brink of insanity but they also have kind eyes and say romantic things to each other.
Devils Minion is compelling because theyāre both awful people who are so Insane about each other in such an unhealthy way that itās kind of beautiful.
louis smiling and confirming to regina that hes gay is so funny to me.... no no i didnt want SEX oh god, you mustve thought i was so creepy haha. Noooo omg i want you to act like my dead vampire daughter who was also a stand in for my humam sister who died believing me to be a monster. which i am.
