The museum at my undergrad hosted a photography exhibit by Leonard Nimoy around 2002 or 2003 featuring photographs from his Shekhina series (which is the series the above pic comes from). It's a gorgeous and powerful series.

Marc Chagall was born Moishe Segal on July 7, 1887, into a poor Hasidic family in Vitebsk, and grew up to become one of the most influential artists of the modern era.

As persecution of Jews intensified, he fled to Paris with his wife Bella, later to New York, never letting go of the world that had shaped him, the little Jewish town of his childhood.

Painting in dreamlike color and defying gravity and perspective, Chagall captured memory not as it looked, but as it lived in the soul, where lovers floated, fiddlers danced, and heaven seemed just within reach. All of his work captured the shtetl remembered as it felt in his soul, a Hasidic world where the sacred hovered just above the ordinary.

Today, his work fills the world's great museums, from MoMA to the Pompidou, and shines through stained-glass windows in Jerusalem and around the world.

His paintings remind us that the soul often sees what the eyes cannot.
