I’m reading a Jewish fantasy book with an OTD protagonist who is a previously peyos-bedecked native Yiddish speaker who has only heard of Maimonides in the context of the hospital and can’t read Hebrew.

The author is Jewish.

This isn’t necessarily the author’s fault (though the author chooses the narrator, no?), but the narrator says “Yitzcock.”

Maybe I’m fully out of the loop on this one and that’s okay, but have you (and if so, how often) ever seen “tatty” and “mommy” spelled as “tate,” and “mame?” I’ve personally never seen it, but that of course means very little.

The only character that is frum from the beginning to the end is a villain.

The character who loves Judaism most is a Reform girl who won’t eat on Yom Kippur but is totally, totally fine with hooking up while her belly growls.

A frum-ish woman uses a tallis as a tichel.

There are at least five different times where the MC waxes on and on about how weak the Jewish people are (even going back from when he was a frum child).

The teenage chasid sidekick decided that actually, the best way to be Jewish is not to keep mitzvot, but to vaguely have some Jewish values. He goes on an entire spiel about how actually OTD MC who sees no value in Judaism and thinks all Jews are weaklings who can do nothing but flail, fail, and die does Judaism SO MUCH BETTER because MC cares about tzedakah (because he volunteered at Hillel ONCE), because he can see MC’s love of HaShem through (secular) music, because MC really likes his girlfriend, and therefore Chasid sees the love of Avraham to Sarah in him….His final scene shows him trying to flirt with a gentile.

And listen, I have no hate towards Reform. I’m not upset that Reform characters exist or love Judaism or whatever, and I am fully aware that observance levels vary and sure, maybe there are some Jews out there who have sex on Yom Kippur but wouldn’t dream of taking a sip of water. That’s all well and good. However, I do care that religious Jews were treated like crap in this book, and I really really REALLY hate it when Jewish representation is either “irreligious Jew knows nothing about Judaism,” or “religious Jew desperately flees the shackles of Judaism,” and nothing else (and the MC was basically both at once). If your Jewish representation has exactly zero room for Jews who love Halacha, then your representation straight up sucks.

The author stated in a Reddit AMA that religious accuracy was of the utmost importance to him.

A big plot point is whether or not MC is “Ha’Ari.” No, not “HaAryeh,” but “Ha’ari.” What’s the plural of “Ha’Ari,” you ask? Why, that would be “Ha’Ari” of course!

In the Great Bear Rainforest, within the ancestral territory of the Kitasoo Xai Xai’s a beautiful melting pot of wildlife and ecosystems collide. It’s a sacred refuge for bears, wolves, cougars (mountain lions) on land, to name a few, and orcas and humpback whales at sea. What a beautiful experience it was to immerse myself in this remote magical realm of wilderness, guided by the keepers of wisdom of land & sea, indigenous communities. Native land stewarded by native people, the way it should be.

This massive black bear, probably the biggest black bear I’ve ever seen, was fishing for salmon, and after many tries, he got one. Pacific salmon is a keystone species that feeds life into the entire region. This bear didn’t eat the salmon in the river, he took it to the forest and, in doing so, fed the soil with very important nutrients. A perfect example of how protecting spawning streams and migration routes and allowing salmon to return and reproduce everywhere they roam in the wild is essential to keeping our planet and all its inhabitants healthy. The critically endangered southern resident orcas further down south are a sad example of what happens when we interfere with salmon routes with dams and overfishing, driving the southern resident orca population to near extinction.

Hi! I was deep diving into Evangelical Christian cults and stumbled on a documentary about the Duggars' cult IBLP. One of the cult survivors, Brooke Arnold, ended up getting a Ph.D. and she has an interesting tidbit to share on a reddit AMA (/r/DuggarsSnark) about academia and BDS etc.:

 I absolutely think parts of academic culture mirror IBLP. I think that's going to be true in any environment that sees people as separate and encourages hierarchies to form.

I remember being in a senior-level Feminist Theory course in my last year as an undergraduate. We were reading Judith Butler and everyone seemed so proud of themselves, as if they'd discovered a secret knowledge that others didnt have and it made them superior. And I saw everyone kissing the feet of the professor (a woman in this case) and I thought to myself how much it all reminded me of IBLP. I sat there in that class and thought "Fuck. I'm in another cult."

That was a feeling that grew exponentially as I pursued my PhD and started teaching. Students are always a lovely respite from this, but academic culture embraces dogma, group think, radicality as an ego-boost, and often shuts down dissenting voices.

One example: there was a push in my PhD program to embrace BDS sanctions against Israel. Specifically, that we would all agree to boycott any Israeli academics because of the actions of their government. Well what about the actions of our government? This was during the Obama years when were were bombing other countries like a nightly game of Call of Duty. Am I complicit in that violence because I work for a public university? Isn't this the opposite of academic freedom and intellectual honesty? I'm not saying that I am right, but i was ostracized and loathed for raising these questions. Dogma - whether from the right-wing or the left-wing is always anti-freedom and anti-intellectual. Dogma does not have to be wrapped up in religion. It exists in secular culture as well.

Also, I learned as a lowly TA serving drinks at a party thrown by one of the world's most famous living Marxists is that Marxists live in really nice houses. Much nicer houses than Bill Gothard, in fact.

This doesn't surprise me, and it is fascinating.
