This June was the 82nd anniversary of the sinking of SS Tanais, a cargo ship used by the Nazis to transport nearly the entire Cretan Jewish community that was torpedoed by the British, resulting in nearly everyone drowning and effectively destroying the Cretan Jewish community. The synagogues of Crete included Beth Shalom (bombed and destroyed in 1941) and Etz Hayyim, which was looted and desecrated, then occupied by squatters until the mid-1950, then served as a place to dump trash, used as a chicken pen and dog kennel. Etz Hayyim was finally restored in the years 1996-1999. It houses the oldest surviving and functional mikveh in Greece.

thought you'd like to know that i was at a new shul for tikkun liel shavuot and i saw someone wearing one of your kippot! i complimented it and we ended up chatting for a bit and waiting for our ubers together outside. it was cool seeing art i like in public and it made me feel a bit more welcome in the space

🥺That really, really is so sweet and i love that so much, and it's kind of funny how just like. Seeing someone has something you recognize on someone can be the perfect ice breaker to lighten things and feel like you have a potential little buddy and I love it!! One time I saw a stranger wearing one of my kippot here and we only made some eye contact because it was so busy, but also don't know if they knew it was mine, I don't assume everyone knows what I look like. But it did similarly make me feel like I maybe had another homie in that new environment.. I hope your homie may see this and I hope that you both have many fun future memories in your community together! :)

I will :) I need to do my current preorders of my sunflower design, but I do plan on opening pre-orders on this blog for that shirt, hamsas and pomegranates in my next batch!

How did you go about introducing yourself to new congregations? I’m considering visiting a few places nearby but am religiously uneducated and terrible at striking up and maintaining conversations with other people, especially with nongeeks. Totally ok if you don’t want to answer!

If I'm going alone to a new one I tend to contact places via phone or email in advance to introduce myself and say I'll be visiting / if I'm "shul shopping", and also use that time to ask any questions I have about upcoming events of theirs I might be interested in. When you do that, they sometimes also make effort to introduce you to people / make you know you're welcome and it's a lot less intimidating than just entering a place full of strangers. I don't know if that's exactly the most common route for people, but with the places I've lived and violent attack history I don't want to just be a stranger showing up out of nowhere. Would love if anyone has other suggestions that might be better chimes in
