Yesterday, I had the "Jack Daniels Muffin" (french toast muffin/booze-soaked raisins) from Hamilton's Bakery in Harlem. Clearly, the Jack Daniels is the selling point, which is why you're reading this now. I fell for it. It's not that the whole affair was forgettable, it's that they're raisins, and there's only so much goodness that can come from raisin-bearing baked goods, as raisins, like Iggy Azalea singles, have few redeeming qualities. In retrospect, I don't know why I expected excitement and razzle dazzle from booze-soaked raisins. I bent my raisin avoidance policy for this. Getting into Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow." I'm reading about the vagrancy laws, convict leasing, black codes, and divisive tactics after slavery that stunted Black progress, encouraged white supremacy, and preceded our current criminal justice system. I noticed a tightness in my chest. Fist clenched. I sigh a lot reading this. As y'all warned me, it's a good but heavy and frustrating read and I need something lighter to balance this. After 31 years of avoiding mussels, oysters and other such shelled situations, I finally tried clams after some urging from my homegirl. Steamed and with a garlic butter moment. Smells lovely. But, well: no. Seasoning and juices: yes. The texture was just as icky as I had envisioned. First though: steamed slugs. No, thanks.
