Forever reblogging this.
And the fact that there’s more than one company means several people called makes it even better.
Research the restaurant: You’ll often find that restaurants have downloadable PDF files with all of their allergens listed in their dishes. These really come in handy because you’re able to scan, first for vegetarian items, then to see if the vegetarian dish can come without dairy, eggs or honey.
Contact the restaurant in advance: Once you know you where you’re going, it’s always a good idea to email or phone the place you’ll be visiting. That way, you can directly ask them what their options are and not only will you be prepared but they will too. They can’t help unless they know after all.
Check for vegetarian options on the menu: I find that it’s really good to start by scanning for vegetarian options. Often you’ll find dishes such as cheesy pasta (depending on where you’re going) or salads with feta… it’s always a good place to start because I can confidently say that 9 out of 10 restaurants will be happy to serve you either a customised version or an alternative!
Customise: Don’t see anything you can eat? Don’t be scared to ask for your own unique version. It’s always stressful thinking you’re bothering waiters, waitresses and chefs but I can assure you- this is their job and they are here for the paying customers. Please do ask them if you see something you like the look of if you can have it vegan!
Ask the waiter: Don’t be afraid to ask questions! When I first went vegan, I was terrified I was bothering the staff but in the end, if you don’t ask then you put yourself at risk. It’s always best just to speak to your waiter or waitress and if they don’t know the answer, they will usually consult the chef. If the restaurant is half way decent, they will be reassuring and will provide you with as many options as possible. That’s what I have found at least.
Be polite: A smile, a please and thank you really go a long way. Don’t get angry if the restaurant is struggling to cater to your needs. Just be patient and keep trying. A lot of places don’t actually know about a vegan diet so please try to be respectful and calm when explaining your dietary needs.
Take note: If you have a particularly amazing experience or especially bad one, take note of where you’ve been so that you can learn from the situation. It will come in handy in the future if you want to revisit a place and you already know exactly what to order!
