so i feel like we all knew this was gonna come one day due to my absence here, but i’m putting shinobu on indefinite hiatus. this doesn’t mean that i’m leaving shinobu forever, of course; i love her to pieces and i always will, but i seriously don’t have the motivation to write her as of right now. plus… the fact that she’s dead in the manga ( and has been for a while now ) hasn’t really done much to help me write either, because deep down i feel like there’s really no point to do so since her story is technically over in the manga. there’s also the fact that the recent chapters of the manga have just been making me pretty sad – which is silly, i know, but sometimes you get tired of your fave characters getting picked off in every chapter. 

i’m seriously glad to have met everyone who has written with me here. i’m sorry for being so late with asks and replies, but again that all chalks up to my lack of motivation to write shinobu lately. i hope you’re all able to understand this – it isn’t really an easy decision for me either since i wanted to write shinobu for at least a year and a half, but things change.

i made an oc ( @soulrot​ if you’re interested in seeing the trash man ) that i’ll also have low activity on, but i’ll probably be more committed and motivated to write him than i am for shinobu. but for now, don’t take this as a goodbye because i’m not giving up on rping entirely. just taking a break from my butterfly girl for a bit. thanks for reading <3

It’s not an unexpected answer ( though, she can’t actually say she expected it either? ) but it’s one that leaves Byleth not knowing what to do other than blinking once, head still cocked to the side. Her hands are still out in front of her, holding the folded coat, but one of them finds its way to her chin out of habit.                     “I want to thank you. Not because it’s necessary.” And maybe a little because her father insists on her trying to talk to more people her age, but that’s neither here nor there right now. 

        she’s speechless for a few seconds, shocked by the stranger’s kindness. ❛ well, if you insist. who am i to turn down such generosity?❜

       the girl had only recently gotten used to receiving rewards or gifts for her efforts. to put it simply, she was humble; she never asked for anything in return when she did a favor or good deed, nor did she ever expect to get anything. this kind stranger could be shinobu’s key to reaching those baby steps that kanae had told her about; the small steps on a long stairway to opening up to change and chasing after new experiences.

     shinobu didn’t have an issue with being touched. she’s not the most affectionate of people, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t capable of showing it through head pats and making cups of tea. she didn’t mind being touched. so why did it bother her now?

       she knows why. it was a demon touching her. it made her stomach do a thousand flips, her heart torn between accepting yukako’s offer and pushing her away with disgust. she’s fully aware that yukako being a demon wasn’t her fault--she didn’t ask for this fate, she didn’t ask to replace her craving for human food with human blood, she didn’t ask to lose her parents to begin with--life was just so unfair to yukako, and any normal person would accept her despite her changes. 

         but the truth was shinobu wasn’t a normal person. she never did well with change. shouldn’t she give it a try at least, for kanae’s sake?

        and so she does. she sits painfully still as if someone had instructed her not to move, extends her arm as a silent way of giving her permission.

           ❛ what was he like? hm.... ❜ she parrots, her hand leaving the boy’s head to touch her chin as she gathers her thoughts. a thoughtful frown turned upwards into a small smile, when she sees the cluster of memories that play across her mind like a short film, all of the scenes blurring together and yet every one is distinctly different than the other. ❛ well he was loud, for one. but you already knew that. everyone did. ❜

          how could she answer him? how could she properly express her admiration and love for rengoku in ways that could be comprehensible? she hated to resort to the poetics, but when it came to him, how else could he be described? ❛ rengoku-san... was like the sun. he lit up everyone room that he happened to walk into. everyone felt warm just by standing next to him, even me. it takes a lot to get me to feel that way. ❜ the girl now has a far off look in her eyes, lost in her own world that was built from her old memories that could never be relived. she clears her throat when she pulls herself back to reality, the real world in which rengoku no longer inhabits.

          ❛ when i first became a pillar, i had doubted my abilities. i thought to myself, how could i ever compare to my sister? how can i proudly call myself a pillar when i lack the true strength that defines one? ❜ she pauses in order to keep herself together. she sighs a few seconds later, willing herself to be vulnerable. ❛ but rengoku-san... he told me that i was strong in my own way. he always believed in me, even when i ignored his kind words. ❜

          eyes flutter to a close as the girl takes in the world around her; the warmth of the sun’s rays, the rustling of petals and leaves, the brush of the early afternoon’s breeze against her skin--things she never properly appreciated when rengoku was still around. he had learned to love the world and shinobu admired that about him, so much so, that she believed that maybe she could love the world, too. her eyes open again and she smiles at tanjiro once more. ❛ i don’t really know how to say it in words that he deserves, but i do know that there’s something inside of you that i thought only rengoku-san possessed--a pure soul. ❜
