Cartilage was human but can transform into this when he "dies" (situation that would kill most mortals) it's more complicated than that but i'm too drunk to explain that right now

anyway, cartilage transformed into the anthropomorphic jackal version of him and escaped, somewhere along the way meeting Grime.

grime has been in this form his whole life but also ran away from his family because he was being abused.
