Selling Out by Jillian Fleck
Selling comics is super weird and hard to do, and I have pretty much goofed it every single time so far.Â
Lloyd Llewellyn print by Daniel Clowes, 1987.
My new comic is all done! I'll have it and all my others at Chicago Zine Fest today. Stop by if you enjoy comics about anxiety, fainting, and libraries!
Grendel does not want @chrisday71 finishing his new comic in time for @chicagozinefest, but the human claims he will prevail!
From Twitter.Â
Hoping to finish âFull Of Bricksâ #4 by next weekend, despite Grendelâs help.
LIBRARY MIXTAPE: Faculty, Staff, Student & Alumni Edition!
We need YOU for the next installment of â
LIBRARY MIXTAPE: Faculty, Staff, Student & Alumni Edition!
In the spirit of selecting songs for a mixtape, youâll choose items from the Flaxman Library and/or the Joan Flasch Artistsâ Book Collection. Itâs a way for the community to get to know a swath of SAIC folks and hopefully to be inspired by the things that are currently inspiring you. Your selections will be on display in the library and the Columbus Drive vitrines April 4 - April 21, 2016.
As space is limited, submissions will be taken on a first come, first serve basis, and only SAIC faculty, staff, students or alumni are eligible to participate. To secure your place in the show, please get your submissions in as soon as possible. Â We will email you to confirm your place in the show.
SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE March 25, 2016
Itâs easy to participate in the Library Mixtape. Hereâs how:
1. Select the 6 items from our collections that you want to include in the installation.
2. Download and print the âMixtape Submission Formâ PDF
3. Fill out the form BY HAND in pencil or pen. The form will be included in the show alongside your selections. Please feel free to personalize it mixtape-style with drawings or whatever you like.
4. Include a photo of yourself.
5. Submit your form and your photo:
a) VIA EMAIL: Scan your completed form as a PDF. Email the PDF and a photo of you (jpgs please!) to [email protected] with âLibrary Mixtape submissionâ in the subject line.
b) IN PERSON: Stop by! This is the best option if youâd like to browse the Flaxman and the JFABC to make your selections. Donât forget to bring your form and your photo.
After debuting at CAKE 2015 Iâve finally put the full issue of my comics zine âFree Booksâ up online. You can read it, as well as download a pdf, at http://chrisdaydesign.com/comics/freebooks01/ Comics journalism pieces about Little Free Libraries and Edgewater Reads along with additional single pages about libraries and books. Read and enjoy!
Finished the new one in time to bring to CAKE tomorrow. âFree Booksâ contains two stories about the Little Free Library movement, in Chicago and Kansas. Both stories originally done for my Fundamentals Of Graphic Journalism class at SAIC. Thanks Anne Elizabeth Moore for pushing this one into existence! Early drafts of both stories were posted on this blog, but theyâve been updated, rewritten, and expanded!! Still hoping to color them before I post them again!
First draft of âEdgewater Readsâ the longer story about little free libraries in my Chicago community. A further edit will be performed on this, and hopefully coloring, after feedback from my Graphic Journalism class.
âWhat Is A Small Free Library? And Who Would Want To Shut Down A 9-Year Oldâs?â by Chris Day
First short chapter about âLittle Free Librariesâ, the tiny free libraries people put in their front yard, done for a Graphic Journalism class at the School of the Art Institute. Longer part, focusing on Chicago and the Edgewater Reads project, will be up in two weeks. Also hope to do a 2.0 version of this strip after getting notes in class today (and also to fix a few bad sentences not noticed until I read it out loud).
First of two one page autobio stories from Bad Chris #2 (September 2014) This and the second page are the pilot for a longer piece about my history of fainting that I plan to work on later this year
Barry Windsor-Smith ~ Men and Hats
It's gonna be done! Bad Chris #2 in time for SPX 2014! Here I come North Bethesda!!! It's all over but the copying (and assembling... and stapling ... and folding... Okay, lots more to do)
So, will I have Bad Chris #2 ready on time for SPX in three weeks? Possibly... Sure gonna try!
I've been meaning to post the comics I created earlier this summer as part of the SAW workshop with John Porcellino at the CHIPRC [see earlier posts]. Â Then this week ,with the death of Robin Williams, some amazingly honest comics that other artists have posted, and my own ongoing issues with anxiety and depression, it was time to get my ass in gear..
This story I called "Ever Again" when I wrote it, although today I may go with "Fiddler Crabs and Cheesesticks." It isn't about depression, but more about my ongoing fight with anxiety. It concerns two events. The first took place in the early 2000's and I once told it as a part of an improv show with the Pat Shay Dancers at iO Chicago. The main story took place this past May.
More comics will come soon. There is one other story from "Bad Chris #1" that I want to put up, and then I'm gonna start working on Bad Chris #2 this week.
"I Want to Live"
I drew this comic yesterday and today itâs up on The Nib.
This is amazing. So amazing.
Part 2 of my first mini-comic âFrankenstein And The Floating Pig Learn All About Libraries!â, a not-very-education adventure. Nonetheless almost every fact in it is a fact! Part 2 features a collection of my some of my favorite librarians (from fact and fiction) and some of my favorite special collections! As mentioned on the last page, I started this comic as a project for Corinne Mucha's comic book class at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, IL and finished it in time for it to "debut" (for me to force it on some nice people) at SPX 2013.
