Lost in Paradise | Open
This trip was exactly what Aubrey needed. With the press tour she’d been on and the constant planning for Chris’ fortieth, she hadn’t really had much time for relaxing. The second she’s boarded the ship though, she threw all of that out the window, spending way too much time at the spa. Like way too much. And now here she was, sitting in a multi-level pool on the beautiful island of St. Maarten. It was almost surreal to her. Moving to sit down her tropical drink she almost didn’t see the person next to her. “Oh hey!” She smiled, turning to the person. “You enjoying the trip so far?”
After a rocky few days, Chris’ vacation was finally back on track. Now, he could finally enjoy his time with a smile on his face with his new girlfriend which still felt weird to say. While Jen was off doing her thing, Chris had decided he wanted to hang out by the pool. “No, it’s the worst. I hate it,” he joked. “Nah, I’m kidding it’s been great.” Chris realised he hadn’t grabbed himself a drink yet. He was slacking, obviously. “How’ve you been enjoying it? You fancy another drink? I’m heading to grab myself one so I’ll be nice and get you drunk enough so I can steal your husband without you noticing.”

We’ve all been there. Last time that happened to me it ended up turning into something wonderful. So depending on what you did, you can still flip it around. Thank you! You’re truly the best! I’ll go once, try not to beat your score, and never tell a soul of your kindness. I won’t boo you. But I’m definitely not drinking lamely! I’m so cool right now.
It was an awkward thing that turned out pretty well so the rest of the vacation has been pretty great. Those first few days were weird, though. Are you sure you’re not drinking lamely? Are you feeling so cool? Top to the bottom just cool? Your boyfriend and I are best mates now, by the way.

Shit, I lose money every day ‘cause of my kid wanting something every time we go out. That’s always good. Alright, name a place and time.
Oh, don’t even talk to me about that. I have three kids who drain my money but as long as they’re happy then I don’t care. It’s why we do what we do anyway, right? So we can give them what they want. Tonight? We can go try out that English pub.
kelsohq:
Love you xoxo. Whoever you settle down with, I hope they’re normal.
It might be a little bit too late for that. Normal is overrated anyway.
You really “sang” that up!

Thats fair. Do I have to be your adult chaperone this whole trip? You know I’ll do it if I have to! Hahaha, I’ll have to bring that up to the porters at some point, maybe get you a shirt that says, ‘If found please return to Scarlett.’ I’ll remember that for the future Hemsworth. That’s a favor I can call in later.
You might have to be. Maybe we should’ve thought in advance and put a tracker on me so when I go missing it’d be easier to find me. Yes! Please get me a shirt that says exactly that. Are you having fun, though? Get up to any shenanigans yet without me?

“You’re so funny.” She rolled her eyes at his joke. Clearing her throat once the subject seemed to change back to serious. It almost seemed surreal how quickly these feelings had developed for Chris. She was supposed to be taking some time, figuring out who Jen was and now here she was sitting here with feelings. She felt kind of dumb for being scared about them, this was Chris after all. But they’d both had their fair share of pain int he past. Something she didn’t want either of them to go through again.
When he spoke again she tensed up again ever so slightly even though she knew this is where the conversation was heading she still hadn’t expected it. They’d gone from her being Liam’s friend to his friend and now this? She paused for a second but recovered quickly. Knowing that the longer she stayed quiet the worse this could end up being for them. “I have feelings for you too. I think I knew that when I got upset about you and Brie.” She unfolded her arms, and drummed her fingers against her leg. “So what do we do with this knowledge?”
Chris hadn’t been looking for anything with anyone. All he’d wanted to do was have some fun and figure out exactly what he wanted but here he was having feelings for someone he’d never expected to like in that way. Chris had always thought Jen was great. They’d always gotten along so well since the first time Liam had introduced them but he would’ve never expected to be where they were now - sitting on the couch confessing their feelings to each other.
It felt like a weight was lifted off his shoulders now that he’d said it out loud. A weight that he’d been carrying since Joe’s party. Now, it really was real and they really had to figure out what to do. They could always do nothing about it and carry on like the whole conversation never happened but the thought of Jen going off and finding someone else didn’t sit right with him. He hated it actually. “I never had feelings for Brie, though. I think she’s great but... she’s just a friend.” He shrugged his shoulders as she asked her question. “Well, it’s new and it’s a change for both of us but if we’re willing to take a risk then maybe we should give this a shot. I’m not saying it’ll be easy but if we do it then I’m all in.”

Hearing him laugh even if briefly was enough to make her relax just slightly. She hadn’t realized how tense her body had been until that moment. Her lips pulled into a small smile as she looked down towards the ground. “That’s why I’m saying it’s good you’re back. We can’t have the god of thunder scarred for life.” She teased. It was almost as if just in that small little moment things could go back to normal. But she wasn’t a dumb child anymore, the amount of grown up feeling talks she’d had recently told her that even just a small joke didn’t exactly make things normal. “Yep. Total jinx. So really, this is all your fault and I’m off the hook now.” She joked back.
It just felt like no matter what they did, that tension was still going to be there until they finally admitted their feelings and worked everything out. “I never know what to expect in these situations, ok? I just know that if you’re not hear for me to annoy it would be sad.” She sighed, folding her arms tightly across her chest. “No, you’re right. We do need to talk about it. I just feel like a stupid kid right now.” In the past it seemed like it was always so easy for her to say how she felt, what she wanted. But with Chris sitting right next to her, she was scared. Scared wasn’t something Jen usually felt. Maybe that one time she almost died, but not about her feelings. Bitting her lip, she looked up at Chris locking eyes with him, her arms crossing tighter. “Fine. But you have to say it first. I’m better at coming up with game plans anyway.”
For a brief minute it felt like things were back to normal but the tension was still there and unavoidable. It was a strange thing to be sat in front of the girl you liked but not wanting to tell her how you felt. He was stubborn and the fear of it all becoming a reality was forefront of everything. Chris really had been caught off guard with the whole thing. It was supposed to be harmless fun not with him sat there suddenly feeling nervous and unlike himself. Everyone knew he was confident, usually not afraid to speak his mind but this was throwing him right off.
“I know. You’d probably melt away like those witches in Wizard of Oz or something.” He smiled for a second before turning serious again as he met her eyes. It was in that moment that he realised something really had changed between them. He really felt it this time now that he knew. He nervously shifted in his seat, feeling like a stupid schoolboy that was about to admit his feelings to his crush. It was Jen and they were both in the same boat so he really had no reason to feel nervous but just the thought of saying it out loud was terrifying enough. “Fine, okay. I have feelings for you and it took Joe’s party for me to figure that out.”

Watching carefully as Chris sat down, Jen made note of the distance and made sure to keep that distance. She didn’t want to do anything to make this worse. Chris was genuinely one of her favorite people and she could kick herself right now for having this awkward tension with him. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to like him, she’d just been down that road a lot and getting involved with a friend never really seemed to end well. Besides, she had recently called off her engagement and she hadn’t really had plans on having feelings for anyone. Hooking up with Chris was just supposed to be fun. But him staying in a different room and not even hanging out with her wasn’t fun. “Glad you came back. I’m sure the Pratt’s want to have some freaky fun without you.” She teased.
She just wanted everything to go back to normal but at his next words she wasn’t sure it could go back to normal. Not when they had these feelings and didn’t want to say it. Jen looked up at him and let out a small sigh. “Yeah, I know.” She moved just slightly away from her, resting her body against the side of the couch. “I don’t like the weirdness either. But clearly there’s something going on here.” She gestured between the two of them and shook her head. “I don’t want whatever it is to ruin our friendship. You mean so much to me. It’d kill me to lose you.”
Catching feelings for Jen had never really been on his mind when they’d first started their whole friends with benefits thing. It hadn’t been something he’d set out to happen but it had. It wasn’t a bad thing by any means just something that complicated things for them. Do they ignore it and stay friends? Do they give it a shot? Or avoid each other forever? It was tricky. Them hooking up was just something fun, something to help each other out but it had turned into so much more without either of them realising it. “Ew, gross,” he half laughed, pulling a face. “I would’ve been scarred for life.”
There was nothing fun about this situation right now and he hated it. All he wanted was for them to go back to joking and enjoying each other’s company not all this tension and awkwardness. “Yeah, there is definitely something. I guess when I joked about not catching it feelings I kinda jinxed it, huh?” He tried to joke to ease the tension but it wasn’t really working. “You’d never lose me. You really think you could get rid of me that easily? Nah. You’re not that lucky. We just... we need to talk about it. I know neither of us want to say it because then it becomes real but we’re gonna have to so we can figure out what to do.”

Jen was always all about having a good time, so once the cruise had been announced she’d been super excited. When it came to roommates she had many options, but she always seemed to have the most fun with Chris and once they called off their whole Friends with benefits thing, it really had seemed like a no brainer to ask him to room with her. She’d been pretty excited when he agreed and tried her best to keep things as platonic as possible between the two. It was actually easy to slip back into the hold habit of being just friends with him, which was nice considering how much he meant to her.
Which was why the events of Friday night were seriously bumming her out. The two hadn’t even spoken since boarding the ship and she couldn’t quite place her finger on what the issue was. Maybe there was some truth to what Pratt had said about feelings. After all, if she was being honest she had been a bit jealous when she’d found out he was hanging out with Brie. Jen had had many different kinds of relationships over the years and had never once been the jealous type. So why had it bothered her that Chris was hanging out with Brie? Maybe she really did like him as more than just a friend. Hearing the door open, she let out a breath and put her phone down. “Yeah, I’m here.” She moved off her bed and walked into their sitting area, opting to sit on the couch instead. “I was beginning to think I wasn’t going to see you the entire trip.”
Chris couldn’t have seen himself rooming with anyone else. The chemistry between him and Jen was undeniable which meant they always had something to talk about and could easily think of something to do. There was never a dull moment when they were together even without them hooking up. He cared about her a lot. Of course he did, he’d known her for years but the two of them had never really been as close as they were now and he had to admit that he really liked having her around.
The whole being weird and awkward around each other thing was bumming him out. Jen was the last person on the planet he wanted to avoid but there was something inside of him that was telling him it was a better idea because he knew if they had to talk then they’d had to have the talk about feelings which was something he wanted to avoid. Since his divorce, Chris hadn’t really wanted to catch feelings for anyone so he’d put up some walls. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to let anyone in but he was scared of getting into something again and it going badly. When Chris felt strongly for someone, he was all in. He gave it his all and was fully invested but now he was scared. He was scared to be all in with someone again. “Yeah, I kinda thought about crashing at the Pratt’s room tonight but....” he shrugged his shoulders as he sat down on the couch making sure there was some space between the two of them. “... I figured we needed to be mature and talk about what happened after Joe’s party. I don’t like this weirdness between us right now. I feel like... I know why it’s weird but I don’t want to say it, you know?”

Hey, so like… anyone seen a captain hat? I’m missing mine! I’m not saying it was stolen, but I’ve got a handsome reward in mind for whoever brings it back to me. It’s a precious family heirloom – okay, less ‘family heirloom’ and more ‘cool thing I bought at a gas station on tour,’ but Henry’s as good as family now, you know? Any clues are appreciated, thank you.
...yeah, I wore it for like half a day yesterday when I was in the casino but then I don’t know where it went. Can we team up? I’m fully invested in this now. Don’t know why, don’t care. I’ve always wanted to play detective.
