With the recent polarizing release of Mulan and as I continue to be frustrated with Asian-AMERICAN representation in Hollywood & Broadway, I was able to channel that frustration into creating this “casting” graphic. Next To Normal is a story that has traditionally been played by white actors to portray a white family struggling with serious mental health issues. I, Chris Ruetten, am Half-Korean and Half-White and Next To Normal is my FAVORITE musical. Next To Normal tells MY story. In this cast, 5/6 characters are played by People Of Color. 4/6 actors are ASIAN. 3/6 are MASSIVE Musical Theatre/Movie Stars. 3/6 are upcoming Asian-American Northwestern Graduate Theatre/Film actors. 2/6 of the actors are LGBTQ+. 1/6 actors is Muslim American. PLEASE share this post. PLEASE give us a chance to show you we can do this. PLEASE give us the same opportunities as our white colleagues. Maybe if this gets enough traction, we could reach Billy, Lea, and Hugh.
