Why go see this movie? Because #RepresentationMatters #DiversityMatters Asians/POC are so underrepresented in movies (and books). I remember the first actress I ever saw (on an American TV show) that looked like me was @parmindernagra (saw her in @gurinder.chadha #BendItLikeBeckham first. She was cast in ER afterward). The first book I ever read with an Indian girl as the main character/hero was @tanujadesaihidier #BornConfused Once a subscriber to @seventeen but left and started my own magazine @globalfashionflare (hiatus due to writing) because never once had they had an Asian/POC on their covers. Always the same people---maybe once or twice they had two black girls. Now keep in mind this was years ago but I wrote them often suggesting they put @brendasong or @freidapinto or @anchaljoseph on their cover. They replied but their message made no sense to me at all. When I got that next month's issue and saw it was this one girl who had been on their cover 4 TIMES, I was done. You know I would get emails about casting and such---majority of the time, none applies to me. When it does (those that say "open ethnicity" don't mean a thing because when you walk into an audition and the casting directors take one look at you, your confidence dies because their body language tells you you're wasting your time trying. Also, often times I feel like agencies/agents don't push as harder for those talents to get more jobs---they focus solely on those that are often booking jobs and you're there hoping something comes your way. @WeNeedDiverseBooks was created to address the lack of diversity in books, #WhiteWashedOUT trended on Twitter calling out roles that should've been given to POC but changed so white actors are given the roles--- @CrazyRichAsians is not just a movie, but part of a movement to be heard and represented. It's important to support us, our art, our stories. This is why you need to go see this movie. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bmo9-9FFf6W/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1nkwn5q4pi1al
When there as many minorities as white people in culture we won't have this problem. #diversity #whitewashedout #southasians
