The pop star gave EW an exclusive early preview of her upcoming soul record, out Oct. 27
For EWâs Fall Music Preview issue, Kelly Clarkson is giving us an exclusive first listen of her new soul album, Meaning of Life, out Oct. 27. âNone of my records were this much fun to make,â says Clarkson, perched on a couch in the palatial Nashville recording complex where much of the LP was recorded. âIâve never been more proud of every single song. Thereâs always [been] a compromise â like, âUgh, I did not want those songsâ â and this just doesnât have one. Which is so weird. And awesome.â Sheâs already shared two tracks from the project â lead single âLove So Soft,â and an album cut titled âMove Youâ â but thereâs plenty more that will move you, too. Hereâs a small taste of whatâs to come:
âWhole Lotta Womanâ âTexas women do it bigger,â Clarkson howls on this brassy number, which uses Southern food as its central metaphor and features horn and bass contributions from Earth, Wind & Fire. Says Clarkson, âThat day [in the studio] I was like, âYou know what Iâm tired of? Iâm tired of people running their mouth. I am a whole lotta woman â accept it or walk away!â
âMedicineâ Clarkson calls her vocal runs on this funky â90s-influenced track âso Mariahâ â and her high notes will have you feeling plenty of âEmotions,â too. âI wanted to make something like the albums that I was inspired by when I was in junior high,â Clarkson explains. âIf En Vogue or Whitney or Mariah were going to make an urban pop [album] now, what would that sound like?â
âI Donât Think About Youâ When Clarkson asked songwriter Jessica Karpov, who records as HarlĆ, for a Whitney-esque ballad to showcase her range, Karpov penned this crown-jewel breakup anthem, whose lyrics were inspired by Clarksonâs split with longtime label, RCA Records. âJessica was talking about a situation in her life, and I was like, âOnce you get to a certain age, you donât have the time to worry about it,ââ Clarkson says. âYou get old enough to where youâre like, âOkay, cool, it didnât work out, and youâre kind of a douche, but thank you for making me a stronger human. Letâs just move on. I wish you well, but I wish you not near me.ââ
âSlow Danceâ If thereâs a baby boom in July 2018, youâll know why: Clarkson has dubbed the guitar solo on this smoldering jam âthe sexiest thing on the album.â Like many songs on the record, it features background vocals from longtime members of her touring band (who are also featured in the video for âLove So Softâ). âWe had such a good time in the studio,â Clarkson says. âThere are songs on my record where I get jealous and want to be the background singer because they get the cool parts.â
âGo Highâ Co-written by Clarkson, this contemporary-sounding cut takes its name from Michelle Obamaâs âWhen they go low, we go highâ speech and features a booming breakdown with chopped-up vocals. âWhen Michelle said that I was like, âThat is the perfect idea for this song!ââ Clarkson says. âEveryone relates to that. No one has gone through life without relating to at some point having to take the high road.â
âWould You Call That Loveâ This sparkling mid-tempo stunner reunites with her âStronger (What Doesnât Kill You)â producer Greg Kurstin. Lyrically, Clarkson says she drew from the experience of watching several couples in her life break up. âIf somebody said âI never loved youâ after being with you for so long, how devastating would that be?â she says. ââIf that wasnât love, what would you call that?â So thatâs where this song stemmed from.â
âHeatâ Over handclaps and stomping percussion, Clarkson delivers a soaring hook about working to give 100 percent in a relationship. â[My husband I] put our kids down and itâs like date night every night,â she says. âWe donât want to be one of those relationships where the passion is gone because youâre so tired.â
When itâs June and a Wrapped in Red song comes up on shuffle.
I actually reconize this kind of situations! đ

The title track, âPiece by Piece,â is such a raw, emotional song. How did it come together, and what was your mind-set writing it? I had River, and even from holding her the first day, I was like, how could anyone walk away from that? Then I started thinking that my husband is such a great father. Heâs not an audience guyâhe is onstage doing the work with me. He changes diapers, he stays up, and if Iâve had a late night, heâll wake up with her in the morning. Weâre definite partners, and I felt so lucky. I was talking to my sister on the phone about how sometimes girls with daddy issues donât find men like that! You find men who are all you knew, and I just feel so lucky. Maybe itâs because I waited and worked through my 20s. Itâs a positive song, even though I know it sounds sad. I donât know what my father went through as a child, and I donât know why he left and made the decisions he made, but everyoneâs human. I donât understand it for me, but I understand the depth of what that isâhaving a childânow, and heâs made me want to be that much more present in my family.
I will be adding each cover & request from the Summer Stronger Tour here, after each show. If you happen to come across a more HQ version of the song, please feel free to share! Enjoy.
