Next Meeting--September 22

The next meeting of the Christian Scholars Network of Melbourne will be held at the Dan O’Connell Pub, 225 Canning Street, in Carlton, at 7 pm on Tuesday, 22 September 2015. Our speaker will be Assoc. Prof. Jenny George, who will speak on “Rene Girard and CEO Compensation.” In addition to her many academic accomplishments, Jenny sits on a number of boards and provides both an academic and practical perspective on this subject. She is also an accomplished alto and choral conductor and directs the Old Cathedral Voices at St. James’ Old Cathedral.

Feel free to come early and share dinner with network participants.

Event of Interest

Network participants may be interested to know that there is a two-day colloquium on philosophical and theological hermeneutics being jointly hosted by Australian Catholic University and Catholic Theological College this upcoming weekend, June 19 and 20. The colloquium will feature Jean-Luc Marion, one of the world’s most important philosophers (on his first trip to Australia), among many other scholars of renown, including past network speaker Kevin Hart. Next Meeting--June 23

The next meeting of the Christian Scholars Network of Melbourne will be held at the Dan O’Connell Pub, 225 Canning Street, in Carlton, at 7 pm on Tuesday, June 23. Please note that this meeting will occur in the upstairs room of the pub, not the usual function space on the ground floor. Our speaker will be Jeffrey Hanson. His topic will be the 19th-century Danish Christian philosopher Soren Kierkegaard’s understanding of faith in his most famous book, Fear and Trembling. Hanson has recently completed his own book on this subject and has edited a collection of essays on Kierkegaard entitled Kierkegaard as Phenomenologist: An Experiment. Feel free to come early and share dinner with network participants.

Next Meeting--May 26

The next meeting of the Christian Scholars Network of Melbourne will be held at the Dan O’Connell Pub, 225 Canning Street, in Carlton, at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 26. Please note that this meeting will occur in the upstairs room of the pub, not the usual function space on the ground floor. Our speaker will be Chris White. His topic will be “Competition, Cooperation and Altruism: Definitions and Distinctions.” Chris is working on a PhD at ANU on aspects of the relationship between Christian ethics and economics. Since retiring after 30+ years with an actuarial and human resources consulting firm, he has studied and taught ethics, and served on the boards of both for-profit and not-for-profit organisations. Feel free to come early and enjoy dinner with network participants.

Our speaker will be Prof. Greg Restall, professor of philosophy at the University of Melbourne. Next Meeting--October 28

The next meeting of the Christian Scholars Network of Melbourne will take place on Tuesday, 28 October at 7 PM.

Our meeting will take place at the Dan O'Connell Hotel, 225 Canning Street, at the corner of Princes Street, in Carlton.  Food and drinks are available for purchase from the Dan O'Connell, including $1 tacos.

Our next speaker is Alan Gijsbers, who is head of addiction medicine at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and medical director of the Substance Withdrawal Unit at the Melbourne Clinic. He is also the president of Christians in Science and Technology and past president of HealthServe Australia. Alan will be speaking on the topic of "The Science and Spirituality of Clinical Medicine."

Next Event--September 16

The next meeting of the Christian Scholars Network in Melbourne will take place two weeks from tonight, Tuesday, September 16, at 7 pm. The meeting will be held at the Dan O’Connell Hotel, 225 Canning Street, at the corner of Alexandra Parade, in Carlton. Food and drinks are available for purchase, so come early to have dinner and a drink. 

Our speaker will be Dr. Mick Pope. Mick is a lecturer in meteorology with the Bureau of Meteorology and an ecotheologian with Ethos: EA Centre for Christianity and Society. He is writing two books on ecotheology, Preaching to the Birds and (with Claire Dawson) the book that will be the basis of his talk for us, A Climate of Hope: Church and Mission in a Warming World.

Next Event--August 19th at New Venue

Please join us for the next meeting of Christian Scholars Network Melbourne, which will take place at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 19, at the Dan O'Connell Hotel, 225 Canning Street, in Carlton, at the corner of Princes Street. 

Our speaker will be Professor Bruce Ellis Benson of Wheaton College in Illinois. Bruce is author or editor of eleven books, including Pious Nietzsche: Decadence and Dionysian Faith, Graven Ideologies: Nietzsche, Derrida, and Marion on Modern Idolatry, The New Phenomenology: A Philosophical Introduction, and The Improvisation of Musical Dialogue: A Phenomenology of Music. His topic will be taken from his most recent book on liturgy as a way of life.

Lecture of Interest

Christian Scholars Network participants may be interested to know that our recent speaker Kevin Hart will give a lecture this Wednesday, July 9, at 6 pm at Australian Catholic University in the Mercy Lecture Theatre at 17 Young Street in Fitzroy. Professor Hart will be speaking on "Is There a Faith beyond Religion?: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Religious Clothes." Everyone is welcome to attend, and feel free to pass this information on to whomever might be interested.

July 1 Change of Venue

All Christian Scholars Network participants should be advised that due to unforeseen circumstances we will need to change venues for our July 1 meeting. The new venue is The Gertrude Hotel, 148 Gertrude Street, on the opposite corner of Napier Street from The Wilde. Please pass this information along to anyone who might be planning to attend. Our speaker is still Kevin Hart, and the event will proceed as normal at 7 pm, but on this one occasion we will meet at the The Gertrude Hotel in the upstairs meeting room. See you tomorrow!

Workshop of Interest

Christian Scholars Network participants may be interested to know that Australian Catholic University is holding a two-day workshop on the problem of evil, July 14 and 15, in room 5.15 at 250 Victoria Parade. 

The workshop features presentations from Eleonore Stump, Kevin Hart, Terrence Tilley, Beverley Clack, John Bishop, Graham Oppy, Andrew Gleeson, and Nick Trakakis. Persons interested in attending should rsvp as soon as possible to Nick Trakakis. Full information can be found by clicking here.

Also keep in mind that our next meeting takes place July 1 at 7 pm at The Wilde. Our speaker is esteemed philosopher, theologian, and poet Kevin Hart, who will be speaking on how the study of theology has influenced his faith.

Please join us for our next Christian Scholars Network event, Tuesday, July 1, 7 pm at The Wilde, 153 Gertrude Street on the corner of Napier, in Fitzroy. Our meeting takes place in the upstairs room, known as the Explorers Club. Food and drinks are available for purchase from The Wilde.

Our speaker will be esteemed philosopher, theologian, and poet Kevin Hart. Kevin Hart, FAHA, is Edwin B. Kyle Professor of Christian Studies at the University of Virginia and Eric d’Arcy Chair of Philosophy at Australian Catholic University. He is the author of Clandestine Encounters: Philosophy in the Narratives of Maurice Blanchot, The Exorbitant: Emmanuel Levinas between Jews and Christians, Counter-Experiences: Reading Jean-Luc Marion, The Dark Gaze: Maurice Blanchot and the Sacred, Postmodernism: A Beginner’s Guide, and The Trespass of the Sign: Deconstruction, Theology, and Philosophy, as well as numerous highly acclaimed volumes of poetry. He will be speaking on how the study of theology has informed his personal faith.

This event promises to be an excellent follow-up to our outstanding inaugural event.

Inaugural Event in One Week

Christian Scholars Network's inaugural event will be held one week from today, June 17, at 7 pm. The venue is the upstairs room at The Wilde, 153 Gertrude Street, in Fitzroy. Our speaker is C. Stephen Evans of Baylor University, who will be addressing the relationship of faith to the academic disciplines. Lecture of Interest

Christian Scholars Network's inaugural speaker, Prof. C. Stephen Evans of Baylor University, will be giving a videoconference seminar on June 6, 2014. His paper is entitled "Paradoxicality as a Criterion of an Authentic Special Revelation" and will be presented at 12:30 pm in room 5.30 of Australian Catholic University's main building at 115 Victoria Parade, Fitzroy.

Christian Scholars Network participants are more than welcome to attend and should be additionally reminded of our inaugural lecture on faith and the academic disciplines, to be presented by Prof. Evans in the upstairs room of The Wilde, 153 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, at 7 pm on June 17.
