How often do we take the time to ask our patients, "What would be a great day for you?"

Take the time to talk to your patients. I am always surprised from what I learn from my patients by just taking a few minutes to talk about something else, anything else besides the list of things that are required of a complete progress note. Incredible moments like these remind me why I went into medicine in the first place. These moments help in developing resilience for these tougher days in medicine.

I was at Georgica Beach in Long Island (I'm not from here so I still say IN Long Island as opposed to ON) on Saturday and as I was flying my kite, Tyrone, I looked up at the sky and saw a rainbow around the sun. This is the third time I have seen this in my life. The first was in Grenada, when I was shortly leaving the island. The second was in South Africa, after a medical trip in Mozambique. It's the strangest thing to see. Wikipedia tells me that it occurs randomly when sunlight is refracted in millions of randomly hexagonal ice crystals. It is often called a 22 degree halo. Each time I wonder if there is some other meaning to this or if this really is just random. In Grenada, people were pointing up at the sun as if it were a sign of God or even a sign of doom. Something to explain a complete rainbow around the sun. And then like that, it disappears and you move on with your day as most people haven't even noticed it in the first place.

Breaking up with patients

I recently finished my third year in internal medicine residency. I also felt like I was breaking up with some of my patients at the end. I transitioned many of them to ‘younger’ residents and introduced them on their last visits with me but I felt at an unnatural loss. You spend three years developing these great relationships with patients especially at the start of your career. It feels like you are just leaving patients behind. They’ve seen you grow as a physician from the start. I am indebted to my patients that have helped me grow as a physician and taught me real life medicine. We owe them a better transition.
